    The Cars

They have always been one of my Favorite Bands, But You rarely hear anything about them any more. I'd say from 1978-1981 They were on the same level as Van Halen and Cheap Trick, But I Just think they weren't good past Drive, Anyways The only really thing I've heard is The Ric Ocasek works With Weezer (BTW Did they Rip off The VH logo.) Who obviously have the Cars sound. Anyway I am just curious If anyone else like them.

I do like The CARS. Very cool, influential band. I purchased their greatest hits courtesy of RHINO Records, and every song is remastered and sounds great. I recommend it to anyone, even if like me you're just a casual fan.

I'm sorry to say that there will will never be a CARS revival since their bassist and second vocalist, BEN ORR, died of stomach cancer in 2000...

It really is weird how far they completely vanished off the map.

I mean, fuckin' Huey Lewis gets more props these days.

The only thing I've heard from or about them in the past ten yers is the goddamn Circuit City ads.

    So much for legacy...

As I said earlier the only other thing I've heard is that Ocasek manages Weezer, If you ever lsiten to them you can tell that he does. The Music sounds so much like the Cars its scary.

Anyways another good thing is that the cars have released a DVD with their earlier stuff on it, The 1979 Musikladen Show, which is their equivlent of Oakland '81. Its very good, I just wish a certain other band would do something like this.

OCASEK is a noted producer, he's done a lot of work in the industry. I think he may have worked with Smashing PUMPKINS even.

Ocasek produced a couple songs on the last No Doubt record, and they were very Cars-sounding also.

saw the Cars on their Door To Door tour...if i had to describe the show in one word...it would be "boring."

Good band. I really like 'em.

Apparently, OCASEK's been putting together a feature-packed DVD retrospective of their career, with live shit and a big documentary telling their story. I'm looking forward to this one.

Frankly, I still think they receive more respect than HUEY LEWIS. Never liked him. There's a lot of 80s pop music I don't like...but THE CARS were excellent.

Being from Boston, the Cars were huge here back in the day

but, yes, they sucked ass live

sounded awful, IMO, and looked like friggin manniquins

I saw them once and had plenty of opportunity to see them again but wouldn't bother

Studio stuff was great, though. They had a very cool and unique sound. My favorite tune was Moving in Stereo

I'd agree with that. I read an interview with Neil Geraldo once...it coulda' been 3 years or thirteen years ago.

I remember him saying something about King Crimson being scared of Easton. and just babbling on.

Anyway you cut it, if an underrated guitarist like Neil Geraldo is throwing your name around in the same babble with King Crimson, you're probably underrated.

Great, great band. First album is a masterpiece. Pretty much dug everything until Heartbeat City...but that turned out to be their last album anyway.

I remember when VH's 1984 came out and Ric Ocasek was interviewed and said something like:

"I think jump is a good song, even if people think Van Halen isn't cool"

I found that to be fucking hilarious, given he looks like an anorexic, goth, un-dead, fag

Still like some of the cars (except Candy-O)

I loved ALL of The Cars' stuff, they were brilliant yet simple - and although some considered them 80's New Wave - they're rock n' roll to me, and to thousands of radio stations in the world....

I was alwasy impressed by Elliot Easton's guitar solos. His phrasing was impeccable, and always a vital part of the song structure.

He is kinda like David Gilmour, in that his guitar work is EXTREMELY tasteful.
Never overplaying, and putting in exactly what is needed, no more, no less.

Though stylistically, I never got off on their sound, they were great songwriters, and very, VERY good at writing the ultimate 3-minute pop-rock tune that would stick in your head for the rest of the day.

Professional craftsmen, to say the least.

Though I never intend on owning any of their music (and I never HAVE owned any of it), I cannot help but praise them to the skies for their work.

Yeah, I saw them at the Garden back in maybe '82 and I slept through most of the concert.

Well, by "sleeping", I mean passed out drunk.

But if they put on a better show, I might have maybe kept one eye open here and there.

    LMAO!!!

I never saw them live. After reading the above, I am glad.

I did see a third-rate band who imitated their sound completely. It was the infamous incident I have mentioned where The Clocks opened for Black Sabbath in Wichita, Kansas in November of 1980 on the Heaven & Hell tour.

    Ugh.

I did see a third-rate band who imitated their sound completely. It was the infamous incident I have mentioned where The Clocks opened for Black Sabbath in Wichita, Kansas in November of 1980 on the Heaven & Hell tour.

    Ugh.
I saw Black Sabbath with Dio around then too. They played with Blue Oyster Cult and called it the "Black and Blue" tour. Great show!

A few days after we spoke to each other in this thread I found my concert T-shirt from that show.

I should try it on just to see if it fits.

My sister was a huge Cars fan when we were kids. Years later I learned to appreciate them, especially Candy-O and Panorama. Can't find those on CD but settled for one of their greatest hits CDs. Who can forget the scene in Fast Times with Phoebe Cates at the pool with Moving In Stereo in the background?

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I have a live show of theirs at the Philly spectrum in 87' on DVD and show show is terrific. It certainly helps that alot of their tunes are kick-ass too.
