was Brett Tuggle bad for DLR's career?

I know this seems like a weird kinda question..but was he?

cos on EEAS,the band were smokin',rockin',and awesome. You could feel the energy.

when our keyboard man jumps onboard for Skyscraper, synths pop up all over the place,Tuggle contributes a fair few songs, and the album really lacks the energy and immediacy of EEAS. By adding a keyboardist, did DLR rock/disbalance the initial solo band, becoming a bit too "pop"?

by ALAE rock was No.1 again, but the amount of additional writers on that album, its hard to credit who was response for what.

    so...Brett Tuggle.

    bad career move?

Dave was, is and always will be responsible for his own "ups and downs" throughout his career. Opinions vary, depending on who you ask, but Dave knew full well, getting Brett to due synth work, or adding a second guitar player or doing some country, blues, rap or all show tunes, that changes like that can do more damage than good. Dave did it for his true hardcore fans that just wanted to enjoy his music instead of critiqing it.

The answer is yes. IMO, Brett was shit for Dave.

None of Dave's stuff was as pop as what Jump was...and no one is bitching about that song.

The thing I always thought was funny was the keyboard player on EEAS....Jesse Harms. Jesse was Hagar's keyboardist...oh the irony.

I bitched about Jump. Still do in fact. I also dont like I'll Wait. Dave is better than that.

Just Like Paradise is the one song Dave made a truck load of money with, but from a hard rock perspective, should have stayed away from. (IMO)

lol Not one of my fav's.

In fact I have a small list of not so cool Dave tunes.

But it should be noted that I have a huge fucking list of not so cool Hagar tunes.

BT imop what it breaks down to is ROCK

There are probably 20 or so diff Discriptive terms to state what

state of Rock it is. Some one should start a thread about it

I saw VH 2 times in 78 and called it to all my freinds BIG ROCK

i made the call and i cant change my mind about it

Led Zep is HARD ROCK Others ACID and so on everyone has diff OP

So for a artist to venture into other areas with style makes me happy

Dave has done this better than anyone I agree w/ you also.

VH, for me was peaking with the VH1, VH2 and FW. Would have been great to see them in 78...

Of course I simulate 1978/79 as best as I can in my living room though. I throw in a few cd's and start toking the night away... lol

    Fair enough.

it was just an interesting theory I had going.

I wasnt blaming Mr Tuggle,I just meant was it a mistake Dave adding him to the EEAS band.

Brett is actually the longest serving member of Dave's band, touring anyway, seeing as he was on the EEAS/Skyscraper/ALAE and YFLM tour. kudos for that Brett!

the blame game continues....now it's brett tuggle's turn to be responsible for the once mighty dlr's pathetic demise. all tuggle did was supply dave with one of the biggest hits of his career but, more importantly, help carry dave live with stellar background vocals. yeah, brett tuggle ruined dave's career. what's next on the list? jason becker & his health problems?

    I never said HE did.

I was just proposing a theory that the edge that the keyboards gave took away the rock edge.

I probably should have called the thread, did a permanent keyboardist damage Dave's career.

i think dave's ego ruined his career. even after the biggest blunder of all, leaving vh, he still had an unbelievable band
to continue on with. instead, he couldn't have anyone too talented around him to steal any of his thunder, winding up with a faceless, paint by numbers backup band to tour ribfests and macdonald openings. DAVE TODAY SUCKS.

    the ALAE tour did?

I've heard negative/read negative reports of it, the band was far from tight and Dave did a few too many monologues.

but yea..I was 4 at the time so my critical viewpoint isnt first hand

    Tuggle helped dave's Career.

Let's face it, Tuggle helped make Dave's EEAS tour a success by bringing Keyboards, having the ability to play CFTH, and Jump as part of his setlist.

And let's face it, the songs he helped contribute to skyscraper kicked ass and helped it become the success that it was.

thome I agree. YFLM followed by Skyscraper. I love it when Dave takes a tangent, change is what makes him the best frontman in history.

I HATE hair metal..........but for some fucking reason I've always LOVED JLP AND Skyscraper. Dave sounds like he's having a fucking blast(as always) and there are some GRATE tunes. Brett didnt ruin Dave's career.....for me, though there have been some critical missteps, his career hasnt been "ruined"......I don't judge those types of things on album sales. I do hate his current career path, though.

Tuggle's probably making more than Dave on tour nowadays in his association with Fleetwood Mac.

Instead of playing 'Just Like Paradise', he's playing 'Don't Stop'.

Did Brett do anything wrong? Nope.

Can the man play the keys? Yeap.

Did I hate him in Dave's band? Nope, but I sure wish there were no keys on Skycrapper.

Brett Tuggle was more like George Brett: an inflamed hemorrhoid sticky with pine tar. Once he gripped, he just wouldn't slip.

Mezro...we need to interview Brett Fraggle Rock...see if the check was worth it all...

    Agreed.

I fucking love Skycraper (except for "Stand Up") and think it's a great album. If it weren't for Tuggle, there would have been no "Just Like Paradise" and I happen to like that song better than "Jump" as far as Dave doing a pop song.

was Brett Tuggle bad for DLR's career?

DLRs' solo career has been eclectic and diverse, with no two releases seemingly being of the same kind. Skyscraper was just another phase and apparently a very successful one. I liked Skyscraper a lot, and so do many other people. I believe Dave sold more albums of that era than any other, though I may be wrong. So I would say NO! Brett Tuggle was not bad for DLR's career. But would I want to see Brett Tuggle back again? NO! I don't think so.

Whats the deal with everyone raggin on pop, I have to admit i have a small(big) thing for 80's synth pop - dont ask me why i just do. I also love Hard rock and some heavy metal but i think everyone can learn to find something they like in most music styles - as long as its nothing after 92'(Gun n roses stopped being good and Grunge stepped in)

I happen to like Jump, Paradise and i'll wait.

From seeing him on that tour...Dave utilized him for an added punch to the overall live sound.

Dave is gonna do what Dave wants to do.

I'm not slamming him for ANYTHING he's ever done. I just wish he'd do MORE!

Given that Skyscraper is the greatest CD Dave ever did solo or with VH, I would say that Tuggle was fabulous for Dave's career.

thats the interesting thing bout life.

    conflicting opinions.

if we all agreed what would be
the point in the roth army, a discussion forum.it would just be an "agreement" forum.

Skyscraper has grown on me, I still dont like some of the vocal effects Dave used though, and Brett Tuggle is a great musician

Brown... once again I am convinced we are fookin' related.... I saw this thread and was going to type the exact SAME fookin' response... "irony" came to my mind and I laughed as I tried to remember J.H.'s name... and sure enough, you bastard, you got it right there in print... my exact thought!!!! lmao
