You absolutely cannot play rock guitar and not use a Chuck Berry lick at some point. It is the foundation on which all else is based on...even if he did steal it from T-Bone Walker.

The 2 most famous students of Chuck Berry.....

Between the three of them, that's 120 years of experience making some of the greatest music in recorded history.

What else needs to be said?

Chuck is the man on guitar. Notoriously difficult to work with, but brilliant at crafting some of the most recognizable and ripped-off riffs in music.

I saw him at Casino Rama about a year ago, and he still has it. A little slower, but still rocking.

One of my fav stories about Chuck was from a guy who owned a nightclub near Niagara Falls (Ont.). He booked Chuck. When you book Chuck, you have to provide a band that knows his catalogue. Then Chcuk just shows up and plugs in, and plays with them. He also has in his rider that the promoter has to provide this old amplifier. I have no idea what make it is, not being a musician, but this thing still has tubes in it, that's how old it is. If you don't have this amp for Chuck to use in his dressing room, you have to pay him $1000 cash, or he won't play. So, the guy who owns the club actually finds the exact amp, in working condition. Chuck walks into his dressing room, sees the amp and goes crazy! He realizes he has no option but to play the show and not get his quick grand. So he plays a really abbreviated set, and then walks off the stage and right out the door with his guitar, into his car and drives off.....

Needless to say, Chuck's never been back.

Umm....most NEW guitar amps still use vacuum tubes.

Well, whatever...but this amp was very rare, WHATEVER it had in it...that's why Chuck put it in his rider. He wanted to collect the $1000 every show.

The Beach Boys, specifically Carl Wilson, took alot from Chuck Berry. The riff from 'Surfin' USA' is essentially the same as 'Back In The USA', and Berry received credit for the Beach Boys' song after his management sued Capitol for songwriting royaltees. Also, the opening riff to 'Fun, Fun, Fun' is essentially the same as 'Johnny B. Goode'.

The Beach Boys later covered 'Rock 'N Roll Music' in 1975, and the Beatles covered it a decade earlier.

Great, great guitarist, and one of the top ten most influencial artists ever.

He really gave a good show last year, but he was, as usual, working with a band thrown together. Anyone who wants a good look at the man and his career, get a copy of the movie Hail Hail Rock n Roll, or more specifically, Chuck Berry in Hail Hail Rock n Roll. Some great stuff with Keith Richards trying to play the opening to Johnny B. Goode to Chuck's satisfaction (no pun intended).
