I enjoy watching Souray this year, that fucker has a cannon of a shot....

Of course, if I'm gonna post in this thread, I gotta talk about my Pens....

The big issue of course is the two month absence of Lemieux after what's called a minor hip strain....

Stan Savran offered an interesting opinion last night on Fox Sports P-Burgh..

After today's 4-1 ho-hum loss to the Rangers, Mario's missed 29 games now.... After 30 games missed, which will be after Monday's game vs. the Full Bug Maple Leafs ( ), the Penguins gain back 80 percent of his pay by way of insurance...

For Mario's salary, that's 4 million clams, which of course to the cash-starved Pens, is a very nice chunk of change....

But the guy hasn't said a word in two months, not one word to anyone in the media....

I wouldn't doubt it that it's the reason he's stayed away this long....

Young compared to who, Messier ???

He's 38, with a long history of back and hip problems, on top of beating cancer....

That said, I don't see it taking 2 months to heal from a hip "strain" as they're calling it....

You have to start thinking Lemieux' sticking around this long to keep the folks coming to the games.

I'm surprised he's still playing, but it shows his character & that he's trying to help turn it around.

Mario wont play unless he feels 110% health, he's just like that now, but I bet he will play more if the Pens make the playoffs (That doesnt look to likely)

Nolan sees 'flashes' after taking stick to eye

    By Lance Hornby

Owen Nolan was being examined by a specialist at Toronto Western Hospital last night for possible eye damage after getting high-sticked on his first shift. Nolan went down to the ice kicking in pain and was helped off the ice after Buffalo Sabres defenceman Jay McKee accidentally lifted his blade into the Leaf forward's face after the two had been fighting for a puck. Initially diagnosed as a cut above his left eye, Nolan had been stitched up and was back into street clothes in the dressing room when he began to experience "flashes" according to head coach Pat Quinn.

"The evidence was blunt trauma to the eye," Quinn said. "We have no reason to believe it's really bad, except that he's not seeing things so well. So that indicates the eyeball probably was hit."

    DOCTOR SUMMONED

Dr. Rob Devenyi, who worked closely with the Leafs when Bryan Berard was partially blinded by a stick in the eye in 2001, was summoned to meet Nolan at the hospital. The on-ice officials closest to the play quickly huddled as Nolan left and McKee was not penalized.

"You hate to see that happen to a player ... and there was no penalty after," captain Mats Sundin said. "Hopefully, Owen's going to be okay."

The Leafs are already without last year's leading scorer, Alex Mogilny, whose hip surgery tops a long list of Toronto injuries this season. Nolan has 28 points in 38 games.

    Brutal.

Of course he was one of my fav Sharks. He brought the grit to the team while he was out here. It was crappy to see him go, but McAuley's doing a helluva job & folks are warming up to him quick.

If I have to root for another team to win Lord Stanley's cup this year it has to be the Leafs for Nolan & Marchment's sake, since Friesen got his last year with the Devils.

    Lemieux out for the season

    Associated Press
    1/6/2004

PITTSBURGH (CP) - Pittsburgh Penguins star Mario Lemieux needs hip surgery and will miss the rest of the NHL season but he's confident he'll be back for the 2004-05 campaign.

The surgery, which will repair chronic tendinitis in his left hip flexor, will take place next Tuesday.

The 38-year-old Lemieux, the team's owner and captain, has not played since Nov. 1. He has been resting and undergoing physical therapy for the past two months in the hope that the injury would heal. But doctors recommended surgery after an MRI revealed no significant change in his condition.

``I was optimistic that the injury would heal, and I was hoping to get back in the lineup and play with some of our very promising young players,'' Lemieux said Tuesday in a release. ``It is disappointing that I won't have a chance to return to the ice this season, but I look forward to coming back next year.''

Lemieux had one goal and eight assists in 10 games this season. On Oct. 29, he became only the sixth player in NHL history to record 1,700 career points.

``Mario continues to suffer from pain in his left hip, and the diagnosis of a hip flexor muscle problem remains the same,'' said Dr. Charles Burke, the Penguins team physician.

Lemieux underwent surgery on his right hip in October of 2001. He rebounded to lead the NHL in scoring for much of the 2002-03 season, finishing with 28 goals and 63 assists for 91 points in 67 games.

``The encouraging thing for me is that the surgery in 2001 was successful, and I have had no problems since then with my right hip,'' Lemieux said.

A six-time NHL scoring champion and three-time MVP who battled back from a bout with cancer and two back operations, Lemieux has 683 goals and 1,018 in 889 career games.

It's bad news for the young Pittsburgh club, which is stuck in the NHL basement with a 9-23-5-3 record.

``We'd been hoping to get him back in the lineup, but I know he's been frustrated by the lack of improvement,'' coach Eddie Olczyk said. ``It's very unfortunate, because he worked so hard over the summer and was in such tremendous shape to start the year. He was looking forward to having a great season.''

It could also be bad news for Wayne Gretzky, who said he would like to have Lemieux return as captain of Team Canada for the World Cup of hockey this summer. Lemieux said he'd be interested as long as he was healthy. As the team's managing director, Gretzky led Canada to a gold medal at the Olympics in 2002. Lemieux was the captain of that squad.

The surgery will be performed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center by Dr. Marc Philippon, one of the world's leading orthopedic hip surgeons.

Are things looking up in Montreal PHOENIX? Now that you have Gainey at the helm, things should improve. He is definitely one of the best GM's in the game.

They're a good team. But they're an old team.....if they stay healthy, they could win it all. I've been a die hard fan for 36 years and they've never won much. So I've got my fingers crossed.

    Phoenix 3, Washington 0

    January 7, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Brian Boucher deflected the attention as easily as the Washington Capitals' shots.

Boucher became the first NHL goalie in almost 55 years to record four consecutive shutouts, making 27 saves in the Phoenix Coyotes' 3-0 victory over Washington on Wednesday night.

``I've had some help along the way, but ... you need luck on your side, too,'' Boucher said. ``They hit some posts and guys have been blocking a lot of shots.''

The last goalie with four straight shutouts was Montreal's Bill Durnan, who accomplished the feat from Feb. 26-March 6, 1949.

Boucher stretched his shutout streak to 265:45, and trails only Durnan's modern-era NHL record of 309:21, also set in 1949.

Boucher will be back in goal Friday night in Minnesota, where the Coyotes close a four-game road trip.

``It's pretty unbelievable,'' Boucher said. ``Hopefully, I can ride it through until Friday.''

Phoenix coach Bob Francis left little doubt that Boucher will start against the Wild.

``What would you do?'' Francis said. ``I'm not stupid.''

Shane Doan had a goal and an assist and Damond Langkow and Ladislav Nagy also scored for the Coyotes, 4-0-4 in their last eight road games.

Two first-period goals gave the Coyotes -- and Boucher -- some breathing room.

``Our formula has been to come out and have a strong first period and go with the mind-set that it's going to be a low-scoring game,'' Francis said.

The Capitals have lost three straight and are 0-6-1 in their last seven, scoring only eight goals during that stretch.

``We obviously ran into a hot goalie,'' Washington's Mike Grier said. ``We had a terrible first period and we put ourselves behind the 8-ball again.''

Boucher, elevated from third string when Zac Bierk sustained a groin injury in mid-November, faced only six shots in the first period, but had to make two tough saves. Grier stole the puck from Nagy in the neutral zone, but Boucher gloved Grier's snap shot from the right circle at 7:12.

Phoenix opened the scoring on Doan's unassisted goal -- his 17th goal of the season -- with 4:16 left in the first period. He scored on a rising wrist shot moments after Washington flubbed a three-on-two break.

Langkow made it 2-0 with 1:56 left in the period, converting a short pass from Doan on the left boards. Langkow swept the puck past goalie Olaf Kolzig from the left circle.

Just 1:29 into the second period, Grier had another good chance, but Boucher pushed the puck clear with his glove. Washington failed on two power plays that produced four shots late in the third period, including a 25-second two-man advantage.

Nagy scored an empty-net goal with 24 seconds left.

    Couple things...

Mario Lemieux is the greates hockey player ever. Better than Gretzky. I saw them both play at the Boston Garden.

I cant understand how you guys can watch the NHL nowadays. Maybe if the Bruins didnt suck and if they had an old time hockey player that the Boston fans could like, I would feel different. Joe Thornton will never do it for me.

There were flashes of greatness last year with Thornton, but players today just dont seem to have the heart that they used to have. Maybe im just old. (im only 34)

I wish that I could tolerate the game the way it is played now, and I try to watch, but it is just so uninteresting. I envy you guys who still enjoy it.

I couldn't disagree more. IMO, I can't see how anyone can think that Gretzky isn't the greatest ever.

If Mario had stayed healthy all these years MAYBE....and thats a big MAYBE....Personally I think Wayne was the best, nobody could ever top him, his records are safe.....

joe's playing better as of late and he would be doing better if they would start calling the penelties that people do to him. how many times have pelelties been called when he's been basically tackled? not many.

LOL, you guys know me, you know I'd LOVE to agree with the sentiment that Lemieux was better than Gretzky....

But Bugger hit it right on the head....

Mario missed 3 years due to back surgeries and cancer, then another 3 years due to his retirement due to back problems...

There's just no way to say "what could have been"....

Had Mario been healthy those years, his numbers would have been very close to Wayne's....

And I've heard from many NHL players that although Wayne was more of a scorer, he couldn't touch Mario in terms of passing and 1-on-1 ability....

    Report: NHL team approaches Winnipeg

    TSN.ca Staff

    1/17/2004

(TSN.ca) - The Winnipeg Sun is reporting that an unidentified NHL team has approached the City of Winnipeg about possible relocation.

Deputy mayor Don Vandal received a voice mail from a representative of an American-based club that is interested in potentially moving to Winnipeg. "They're asking 'How serious is Winnipeg, because we're in trouble," Vandal told the paper.

The reported team is not the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team that Vandal has courted in recent weeks, but he would confirm that it is a team that is not doing well financially.

Winnipeg hasn't had a team since the Jets left for Phoenix in 1996.

The news comes just after the Pittsburgh Penguins gave a firm 'Thanks, but no thanks,' to an invitation by the deputy mayor to move the team to Winnipeg.

Some diehard hockey fans said bring it on, while others said their passion for the league left town with the Jets when they moved to Phoenix and became the Coyotes in 1996.

Radio call-in shows, online chat groups and sports pundits jumped on the story, which had snowballed following the publication in the Sun of a letter Vandal wrote Penguins majority owner Mario Lemieux.

I read that about Roenick today on ESPN.com

I can go either way on this one...
I was leaning towards "shut up & play" until he got his dental work rearranged, now I'm not so sure.
Either way, half of it has to be because he's playing under that pear Hitchcock.

SHARKS 2 AVS 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOO YAH!!!!

    Take that Teemu.

No, it won't be the Penguins....

The main issue with the Pens is funding for the new arena....

They are very close to approving slots in Pennsylvania, which will generate income to a new arena in Pittsburgh and a new convention center in Philly....

There was a PA congressman on FSN 'Burgh saying it should be approved in a matter of weeks....

Now what happens with the CBA, who knows....

Yeah, Nashville's gonna be a tough team in the years to come....

It may very well be Carolina.... I remember Poj saying how much money they're losing, combined with their current payroll...
