I know the notes. I know its two fingered tapping, using the thumb. The only think I cant figure out, is what effect am I to use? I cant get that sound. I always seem to hit the strings hard to get that sound out. Do I need more distortion? Is it in the flanger?

Dude, its in his fingers - plain and simple. Yeah, his actual tone is killer, but it'd sound like a frozen bucket of piss with a popsicle stick stuck in it if he didn't have the 2 best hands of all time.

Ed's tone isn't overly distorted to be honest, and there is no flanger going on there. There MIGHT be a slight phase going on, but I've seen him do this many times live and he doesn't do anything special, effects wise. It IS all in his fingers. Don't forget about the left hand mute that is going on at the same time as the tapping with the right hand.

Cathedral...I can do the opening to Mean Streets. Just not the tapping. So you never got the hang of it either? Its ok not to do it, but doesn't drive you nuts that you can't? Im cranking gain, lowering my volume. Cranking distortion, lowering distortion. No matter what...LOL Oh well. practice practice practice they say...

Go get a video called "in the style of Van Halen" by curt Mitchel, he will show you how to get the old VH sounds without using expensive equiptment.

But if you have the money get an Eventied Harmonizer. the new ones are alot of money but will simulate any type of chours, panning, fade echo type chorus sounds you need, then just pipe in your distortion sounds and your all set.

Using a phaser with a bit of gain on it will bring the treble frequencies up a bit and help the harmonics sustain.

My phaser is a Pearl, the big orange 9V battery one in the case that looks like a Ross compressor: pretty sweet! $35 bucks off Ebay.
