Well, it doesn't appear the Stones will be on SNL.... or will they?

I don't want to read too much into this, but isn't it odd that Mick Taylor shows up on the New York based Jimmy Fallon show the same week that Jagger is hosting SNL? Fallon is an ex SNL cast member (who usually shows up on the season finale) and I believe Lorne Michaels produces his show.

It could all be a coincidence, but it's a damn big one.

well...that wasn't so great. a couple decent sketches but overall i give it a "meh." didn't really have great expectations, it is SNL after all. maybe i should have said i got no expectations.

when Mick said "i wrote this song about the upcoming election" i cringed.

liked the Foos better than Arcade Fire.

Not exactly Mick's best lyrical work here, but it sounds like something he probably just wrote this week, and didn't put a lot of thought into. But what the fuck, it's still got Jeff Beck in it......

Man, I know I'm probably way late to the party with this but the new, re-mastered version of Some Girls with bonus tracks is amazing. Just finally got around to buying it the other day.....some really good stuff on that second cd.

Great stuff indeed, especially "Claudine", dedicated to the Canadian Prime Minister's hot wife, Margaret Trudeau, who in the end of the 70s was strongly attracted to the Stones...
Ronnie Wood that is, and maybe Mick Jagger, even.

Maggie "Claudine" must have been Hot Stuff...

She used to wind up at Studio 54 with Ronnie and then (supposedly) Mick by 1979, triggering scandal in Canada.

What I find no good in the "Some Girls" reissue is that Jagger indulged himself into re-recording vocals... What a pity...

Mick committed that in too many of the "Exile" bonus tracks. It pissed me when I heard that - spotted the trick at once.

That's all true, but that's not what Claudine was about at all. Claudine was a real person.... actress Claudine Longet, who was married to singer/TV host Andy Williams. She had an affair with an Olympic skier named Spider Sabich, and she shot & killed him, claiming the gun discharged accidentally. The jury bought it, and she only served 30 days in jail on the charge of "misdemeanor criminal negligence".

I never knew about any of that Claudine stuff....thanks to both of you. I thought the vocals sounded a little "added"....haven't listened to the re-issue of Exile yet. Some Girls was such a strong period in time for the Stones....total renaissance for them.

    You set it right, Satan!

I thought I remembered about the story, thought I could sum it up by memory, but...

Mick tells about how "Claudine" was taken out of "Emotional Rescue", which was released 2 years after "Some Girls" by the way,
yet they released it in the "Some Girls" reissue.

Sorry for the fucking ads before the audio clip starts.

Much of Emotional Rescue was "leftovers" from the Some Girls sessions, but if they were going to open up the Some Girls bonus tracks to later sessions, I don't see why they left this one out. One of Keef's greatest vocals ever, in my Most Unholy opinion. (The woman singing is Chrissy Kimsey, the producer's wife, believe it or not!)

Probably about half of the Exile bonus tracks were "new" vocals, like the singles "Plundered My Soul" and "Following The River", while others were left intact from the original tapes like "Good Time Women" and Keef's hilariously smacked up version of "Soul Survivor"......

Yeah, I've heard those - Jagger's voice strikes me as aging somewhat like McCartney's, but Sir Paul sings in a more mellow style that doesn't draw attention to it. I thought he sounded great on 'Memory Almost Full.' Other than a few Stones tracks here and there, I haven't particularly cared for Mick's voice since 'Voodoo Lounge.'

As far as the Some Girls bonus tracks go, you had songs like "No Spare Parts" and "Do You Think I Really Care" where the vocals weren't really finished in the 1978 versions, so I can see why Mick re-did them with a complete set of lyrics. It only sounds a little off because he waited 34 fucking years to do it.

"Don't Be A Stranger" was the only one that was a total rewrite lyrically, because the original title of that song was "Lucky In Love", and Mick already used that title on his first solo album (even though it was entirely a different song)

The only true disappointment for me on the Some Girls bonus tracks was "You Win Again". The vocals for that one did NOT need to be re-recorded. It's a fucking country song, for Christ's sake, so when they recorded the original completely drunk off their asses, it sounded COUNTRY. Should have left that one alone, Mick

That's absolutely true. It's the oldest song on Tattoo You. Originally recorded in March of 1970.

Mick attempted a vocal on it once before, but it was a bit of a drunken falsetto mess

How would Voodoo Lounge have sounded if Keef did all the vocals?

(actually there IS a bootleg out there that has him singing the whole album)

This is easily better than about half the songs that actually made it on the Dirty Work album.

That version of Sparks will fly would be perfect with keith on lead and Mick and keith singing the chorus. I do like the original...can't say that i don't. I think I enjoy Keith's voice more as he has gotten older if that makes any sense. he had great vocals on plenty of tunes over the years and some not so great vocals on others.....he has that perfect raspy, emotion filled voice over time. Some of his earlier vocals sometimes sounded a little.....I don't know if whiny is the right word....but I really enjoy his vocals say from about Some Girls on.

Anyone remember when they were on SNL in '78 doing these three tunes(Beast Of Burden, Respectable, and
Shattered)? Pretty crazy performance for the time.
I'm surprised nobody uploaded it to youtube(video)

It's been uploaded to YouTube several times. Problem is that ANYTHING even remotely related to Saturday Night Live is flagged almost immediately and pulled soon after that. I don't know who Lorne Michaels is paying to troll that website, but they're actually earning their salary.

Don't know if this is leftover footage from the "Gimme Shelter" movie or what, exactly. But decent recordings from the 1969 tour are very rare, and besides Hendrix appears in the clip, so good stuff all around......

And now let's go way the fuck back before most of us were even goddamn born........

Seems that this performance is half live and half lip-synced. Geezus... make up your minds

This one should sound kinda familiar...... My guess is that someone at the label got a little nervous over Mick singing about "whores" in the chorus, and made them rewrite the lyrics.......
