Mick Taylor was the best guitar player who ever played with the Stones, agreed - except for the 1975 sessions Jeff Beck took part in.
The studio stuff they did with him on lead was so skilled - the best live stuff you can find was made with Taylor too, "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out",
    "Brussels Affair", "Ladies & Gentlemen"...

The Brian Jones years were magic - if only they could have recorded their stuff with Jones with the technology from the late 60s/early 70s... - maybe the best they ever did as far as composing; too bad the sound of those days didn't tally their inspiration.

With Ronnie Wood since 1975 they've delivered great stuff too, and Ronnie allowed Keith to reach the guitar interaction he wanted, that you especially hear on "Some Girls", their best album with Ronnie Wood I think.

"Emotional Rescue" is rather uneven, but there are great tunes like "So Cold", "Let Me Go", "All About You", "Where the Boys Go"...

The videos from the 1978-81 period kicked ass ("So Cold", "Neighbors", "Start me Up"...).

"Undercover" is really underrated, as "Dirty Work" is. Neither of these two albums were followed by a tour, which probably got them ill-appreciated.
I wouldn't rate them under "Tattoo You".
I'd say "Steel Wheels" is their second best with Woodie.

Voodoo Lounge would have been excellent if they had cut about 4 tunes off it IMO...

Bridges to Babylon almost sounds like some Jagger solo album, except for "Flip the Switch". Almost boring... Haven't listened to it in a good dozen years.

"Bigger Bang" would have been much bigger, had they taken a few tunes out, like for Voodoo Lounge...

But in retrospect, what an amazing discography, there's so little to leave aside!

Too bad Bill Wyman didn't play more than he did the other day, and even Mick Taylor. The celebration would have been more complete -
but apparently Mick Jagger decided it wouldn't happen like that... by the way, he was limping on stage, wasn't he?

Babylon was a horrid album - boring and uninspired except for Keith's songs. I put it up there with Satanic Majesties as their worst ever. However, I thought Voodoo Lounge was fantastic - liked every track and it still holds up well today. I think I've only listened to Bigger Bang once. It didn't do too much for me. Maybe it's time to give that one another spin and see if my opinion has changed...

Ironically enough, some of the better songs from the Bigger Bang sessions did NOT make the album....

"You don't have to mean it" is a gem of Keith's - the only tune worth it on the album IMO, apart from "Flip the Switch".

"Saint of me" and "Out of Control" are very good songs, but they'd have fitted Jagger's "Wandering Spirit" way better (a great solo album by the way).

I haven't played "Bigger Bang" since 2005, just like I've left "Bridges to Babylon" on the road side.

I can't consider "Their Satanic Majesties' Request" as a bad one, though it's a weird piece in the 60s Stones puzzle.

I even still dig the 2 parts of "Sing This All Together". "2000 Light Years from Home" and Wyman's "In Another Land"
may ride the 1967 sci-fi wave, but they are successful attempts at that genre.
"She"s a Rainbow" and "2000 Man" are just marvelous, aren't they?
"The Lantern" and "Gomper" don't really sound bad, do they?
"Citadel", if you take out the horns, has a classic riff in it and the guitar sounds really sharp.
"On with the Show" is full inspiration and could have been included in Beggar's Banquet", couldn't it?

Well, it's not my fave Stones album by far but I still think it's a great album, though fairly atypical.
I even almost bought the 8-CD Satanic Sessions box set 14 years ago.

Loved Rough Justice and Infamy. That disc is worth it just for those two tunes.

I might give Satanic Majesties another spin just to see if anything has changed. Who knows - it took about 15 years for DLR's 'Your Filthy Little Mouth' to connect with me, so anything can happen. But screw Bridges To Babylon. I have no desire to listen to that blandness ever again (I've already got 'You Don't Have To Mean It' on my play-list, so it's all good...)

Ronnie was on fire tonight. He must be clean n' dry.

Lady Gaga was a fucking mess.

    I'm Goin' Down was great.

I still say they didn't spend all that money on the stage and time rehearsing to only do five shows.

Sobriety is obviously good for Ronnie, but I think the Faces semi-reunion tour was good for him too, since it forced him to actually play guitar. In that band, there's no Keef to help him carry the load, so he had to remember how good he used to be when he was the only guitar player on stage.

I don't get the whole Springsteen thing. I like a few of his songs but the guy is a horrible singer. He makes Dave sound like Paul Rodgers. Bon Jovi is even worse live !

"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by WWE"

    What the FUCK??

It was bad enough when we had Allen Klein and his even greedier kids blocking Rolling Stones videos from being on YouTube - even the post 1970 music which they had no claim on whatsoever.

But now Vince fucking McMahon and his right wing failed candidate wife are in on the scam???

    Geezus.....

    WWE produced the PPV.

You could tell it was their first foray into a live concert broadcast. They tried to make it "different," with big sweeping shots and fast cuts.

The HBO live stuff is shot/directed much better, Marty Callner usually does those.

    Meh...

As a whole, I wouldn't say the Stones best work was done with Ronnie Wood in the band, just based on what I like (regardless of what Keith Richards thinks).

Not that the blame for this necessarily lays at Ron Wood's feet. From Undercover on, Jagger/Richards just haven't been able to come up with much that is able to stand alongside their best work (Beggar's Banquet to Exile On Main Street), so if the songs ain't there Wood is only gonna be able to do so much in terms of polishing turds.

I will say that I'm looking forward to picking up Black and Blue and giving THAT album a close listen, as I haven't in ages. Some Girls was good stuff. Wood certainly gets credit for participating in the creation of one great Stones album with that one. Emotional Rescue is so-so. Tattoo You was quite good, but a decent chunk of that featured old leftovers that Wood didn't play on originally...as well as a track specifically created for the Tattoo sessions (Heaven, a great fucking track) that neither Wood nor Richards appeared on.

I mean, anyone telling me that Undercover, Dirty Work, Steel Wheels or any of the subsequent albums are even as close to good as anything put out prior to 1982 has shit in their ears.

Apparently "Almost Hear You Sigh" was one that Keef had originally written for his solo album "Talk Is Cheap" - which is why Steve Jordan is credited as co-writer on the track. Probably just as well that it didn't end up on that album, because I like Keef's vocal take well enough, but I can't imagine the song without Charlie's drums.

Don't know song titles too well, but I always thought Keith's You shouldn't Take It So Hard sounded a bit like the Stones Mixed Emotions. If I'm not mistaken, the latter came out shortly after the former, no?

Keith's album came out in 1988, and Steel Wheels was 1989.

And yeah, there is some similarity in the riffs of Take It So Hard and Mixed Emotions. But you can probably hear some similarities in the new song "One More Shot" as well.

Hey, the guy's been playing guitar for half a fucking century. 50 years, 6 strings and a handful of chords... you're bound to copy yourself eventually

To me, the similarities, were the delivery of the verses of those songs. Both musically and vocal melody. Totally agree about the 'bound to copy yourself' angle. No big 'ting.

Since it's a Devil's job to torment you mortals on occasion, here's something you may have never heard before......

(and yes, I did pose for the cover of the single)

This was a bonus track on a voodoo lounge single I bought - easily 1 of my fav post Classic Rollin' Stones works, a little harp, a bit of slide and lyrically it's presented fairly tame / mellow to perhaps include wimmin folk & content is about what every guy wants most - SEX SEX SEX

Actually that song was on the same single... Or at least it was on the version that was released here in Hell.

I thought Rod Stewart co-signed it, but it's a Mentor Williams song.

"Just my imagination" was a little more interesting cover, I think.

As far as covers, Stones songs covered by others rarely make it, do they?
Except for Johnny Winter's versions of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" or "I'm yours and I'm hers"
(which the Stones played in Hyde Park under the title of "I'm yours, she's mine, BTW.

We humbly play 3 Stones tunes in our set with my band, but if it were just up to me,
    we wouldn't - I'm too much of a fan.

Anyone have an opinion on what may be Keith's best solo ???

    ----------------------------------------------------

I still play a bigger bang - yeah, there are a couple middle songs that could go, but as a whole I like it

Some Girls seems like an apparition in their catalog, - the pacing is a bit slow & controlled at times and then very fast and driving, while the whole album has a glossy / rich sound - to me it is very unlike the rest of their work

I play Main Offender & Wandering Spirit both quite often
    - I have never heard Ronnie's Slide On This but I am told it is worth a listen, that may be a youtube look later ..

I agree their best Rock was the MT yrs.. but the Ronnie yrs have been good solid rock music - a bit more pop & less bluesy than the BJ, or MT yrs, but good

    - Damn Tattoo You reference .. I got, do wha do wha do wha- don't want to be your slave ... stuck in my head now , doh !

Brian Jones was killed by the gardener wasn't he ? I thought that guy confessed on his death bed ?? He was the stones until he became too stoned and the stones became Mick & Keith ..?

I gotta go with the solo on " Sympathy For The Devil " as Keefs best . Seems like that one is the universal favorite . Keef is such a rhythm monster that it almost seems unfair to other guitar players . I gotta say this though , without a doubt the Mick Taylor years were the pinnacle of the Stones best . They have many moments of brilliance before and after the Mick Taylor era but that was the most consistant period of Stones magic .

Yeah - he is a rhythym monster - Main Offender really showcases that best imo (999)

Besides Sympathy - which is a bit choppy What would ya go with - I am not the greatest at isolating the who is playing what when it comes to Kieth and the other lead he shares time with (I also suck at figuring which guitar is EC & which is Duanne on Layla, lol!)

I enjoy both of Keith's solo outings. Granted, they were nothing great but they do capture that Keith riffing spirit and that with the help of Steve Jordan proved he could write a tune without Jagger's ego getting in the way.
