    National Anthem

It may take a minute to come up. It plays off of Windows Media Player. It is incredible.

Well, that was good, but it wasn't the National Anthem.

Ya know, the National Anthem is the most butchered song on the planet!
That song has been raped and pillaged 9 ways to Sunday, twice on Monday if the wind was blowing east.

People start singing it in too damn high a key, you're doomed from then on.
Start low so you can hit the high note everyone waits for so they can applaud, lol.
If you don't hear the crowd applauding before the song is over, YOU SUCKED!

That's why Jimi's version is the definitive one. He didn't need to sing at all, and still hit all the high notes.

Jimi played the best instrumental version but Whitney Houston's version will bring grown men to tears. I've seen it. She fucking belted that song the way it was meant to be done. I've been to several theaters on various military bases that play the National Anthem before every movie and she sings it with so much emotion it'll tear you up.

                  Elvis,

At the Chicago Blackhawk games in the late 80's and early 90's the fans started cheering when Wayne Mesmer started sing "And the Rocketss Red Glare". Then people started cheering in qnticipation of that line. People kept cheering earlier in the song until they started before the organ even started playng. It was an incredible experience being with 18,636 people who were just proud to be American Citizens. It did not matter who was president or who controlled congress. We were not democrats and republicans. We were Americans and were proud of the troops serving in the Gulf War. I hope that gives you some perspective.

I guess its a case of "you had to be there."

I don't think the guy's that great of a singer, from what I hear, but to each his own. I don't care for Whitney Houston singing anything for that matter.

Now on the other hand, Ray Charles fucking OWNS "America the Beautiful". They might as well retire that song now, because nobody else will ever be able to do it justice.

It was not the singer it was the being in the stands. Seeing the look on the faces of hockey teams coming in Chicago to play the Hawks. They looked scared shitless.

                        Roseanne Barr's version wasn't bad

                        Roseanne Barr
                        July 25, 1990
The poster child for Star-Spangled Banner controversy, Barr (whose last name and reputation were still intact at this time) tried to add her own brand of humor to the singing of the national anthem before a baseball game in San Diego. After screeching through an off-key version of the song she added some clichéd baseball humor by spitting and grabbing her crotch. The popular sit-com comedian immediately became public enemy number one. :p
