Montroses First album is fairly good musically, Vocally it sucked the big cock though. You can really here how it influenced CVH, musically hell it even sounds like something CVH might write (Except CVH would do it wayyy better.). Vocally it sounds like Nails on a Chalkboard though.

But regarding the topic, while I've never heard any pre-Halen Sam work(except HSAS), I'm curious about the first Montrose album, mainly because I've heard many here with similar musical taste say it was ok and I'm curious.

The first Montrose album is a classic. Short length by today's standards, but there was a lot of promise there.
