You do have a point. That is what the scammers count on.
If the victim is not gullible, perhaps they will be greedy enough to be blinded to the scam.
The difference is, the VICTIM is NOT robbing someone else. The victim is NOT a criminal! Sure you can say it is greed that motivates the victim, but they are not stealing from anyone.
The brain surgeon's "greed" is not the same as the scammer's "greed". The brain surgeon is greedy because he thinks he can gain a large amount of money. Because he has been convinced it is already his. That he just needs to collect it. There are other scams where that is actually the point. Lottery scams, etc. "CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE WON 3,000,000 UNTIED STAT DOLARRS!"
The scammer's greed is that he wants to steal from other people.
And he does not care how much he fucks up people's lives.
People have committed suicide after discovering they have lost everything they had because they fell victim to a scammer.
Do they deserve that? DO THEY REALLY AND HONESTLY DESERVE TO DIE?
Do their families, friends and loved ones deserve to see someone they care about commit suicide due to the actions of a scammer?
The victim is not the only one whose life gets fucked up.
I have dealt with people who thought they were replying to a real "help wanted" ad on craigslist, and thought what they had been hired for was a LEGIT job.
Only to find out the packages they were re-shipping for their "employer" contained fraudulent cashiers checks.
Suddenly they have a knock on the door, and it is the FBI, arresting them for mail fraud, possession of fraudulent financial instruments, etc.
Suddenly, they go from having this 'job' (after they had been previously unemployed for a year), to being in jail. If they have kids, well, the kids are going to suffer. If it is a single parent, the kids get taken away by the State.
Then the victim is looking at legal fees.
Their friends suddenly think they have been hanging out with a criminal, and stop coming around.
Not a lot of friends who are going to visit the victim in jail after being arrested on federal felony charges.
Then if the victim can afford a lawyer, and can successfully defend themselves as a 'victim', they will have to go through the process of rebuilding their lives. Continuing to pay legal fees to regain custody of their kids, deal with financial problems arising from being in jail for a period of time, or whatever.
The victim may suffer, but there is a trickle-down effect. Do the kids of a victim deserve to suffer because their parent is either gullible or stupid? Last I checked, it is not against the law anywhere on the planet to be either gullible or stupid.
Not only that, if a scammer is successful at scamming someone like the brain surgeon, or the congressman (yes, it HAS happened), that gives them more money to live off of while scamming other innocent people.
You could argue the brain surgeon deserves to get scammed, but do all the other victims deserve it? All the other victims that get scammed because the scammer has gotten enough cash off this one guy so they can keep on robbing people blind?
No. They do not.
Every day, thousands of people on this planet get new computers and get on the internet.
The scammers are waiting for their prey.
There is no shade of grey.
These are not "counter-scams" that the scambaiters engage in.
They do not scam the scammers out of money. To do that is to lower one's self to the level of the scammer.
No, they do what they do to waste a scammer's time and effort that they would normally spend scamming people. There is no profit motive. If a scammer pays shipping fees to receive boxes, the scambaiter does not gain anything from it financially.
It is against the rules to accept money from scammers where I hang out at. I deal with people who are former or current law enforcement officers. At all levels. From local to international.
Some of these people are tops in the world in the field of cyber-security, and fraud prevention.
We are not interested in ripping off a scammer. Just to prevent them from stealing money from innocent hard-working people. And possibly get them arrested.
Scammers may not have ethics. But we do.
And bear in mind, these idiots who send out these 419 emails are usually working on many scams simultaneously. AND, these guys are the bottom-feeders.
Not going to try to convince you to change your mind. I have stated my very valid case.
If you think people deserve to be victims of criminal activity, well, I guess I should just laugh at you next time someone steals your car, eh?

And while several are demented is some way, they are in no way scamming or conning people out of anything and at the end of the day the people are just buying a car...Scammers are like used car salesmen.
