Suggestions for audio copying a DVD.

The software for splitting the audio from a DVD generally sucks and results in lowered audio and poor, lossy quality.

I picked up a music DVD that I want to make a CD, audio-only, copy of for personal use. For instance, I find that when I try watching a DVD while driving, I run-off the road and/or unintentionally kill pedestrians.

I was thinking the best route to go with this is to try to make a copy using an old cassette tape, or VHS Hi fi, then to play through the computer and get around any anti-piracy crap that way. Will this work? Suggestions?

    Try This

I don't know if that will help but it said wav files so maybe you can keep the fidelity.

Total Recorder can do that and more. it's not freeware but at $12 it's a steal. it can record streaming online audio from any source, or record from your line in jack. play a DVD on Media Player and use TR to capture the audio. record to WAV or MP3. plus it has a timer, hook up your FM receiver and record Dave every day. it's a Tivo for radio.

i've had my Sirius receiver hooked up to my computer for a week recording all kinds of shit...beats the hell out of downloading, and the RIAA ain't gonna catch you either.

    find it at http://www.highcriteria.com/

i know it sounded like a commercial, but i was highly impressed by the software. two thumbs up!

I have something similar. the problem is that the DVD doesn't seem to play correctly through the in-jack of my computer, while VHS plays perfectly and I can record excellent sound quality WAVs. It's almost like the DVD can read that you're hooking it up to a non duel-channel input source, and it somehow screws up the audio to frustrate said recording. I dunno,' maybe it's me, but I swear a DVD won't play right when fed through a duel jack to a single "headphones" style connection.

I use Creative mediasource to do this...

I can play a DVD with Windows Media player and record the audio in real time with the Creative mediasource player...

I can also eq and monitor it in real time...

I can choose the format, sampling frequency, bitrate, mono or stereo, WAV, WMA, or MP3...

    I also use minidisc...

I use Pro Tools for my original compositions, and I can convert them to anything I want...

Makes it nice and easy to collaborate with other musicians...

Nick do ya have a DVD Drive in your machine?

I mean, the thing to do is play the DVD (if you have one) and just use software to record the audio.

Fer instance I use SoundForge, but there are many freeware audio recorders out there...

And atrac is lossy, but it's not anything like MP3...

Type R and S are outstanding...

    MDLP is noticeably compressed...

I do, but audio recordings come out pretty shitty and lossy.

    That is strange....

What kind of sound card do ya have?

I can record anything from any source on my machine and they turn out fine...and I only have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card.

No shit. Can you adjust the settings? If you are sampling at 22 khz, then of course they will sound like shit.

Not trying to insinuate you are doing anything wrong...just trying to help you figure out why it is happening.

    Check this shit out.

I borrowed a TECHNICS 8-Track recorder last week. The fucker I borrowed it from is a HARDCORE analog enthusiast, and also supplied me with BRAND NEW blank 8-Track tapes. He laughed @ my hairbrained idea 'cause he's jealous of my twenty thousand dollar tube DAC that's better than his thirty thousand dollar one. Manipulation is a great thing. The hairbrained idea got me the recorder and the tapes.

Anyway, I ran the Frampton Comes Alive remaster through the DAC directly to 8-Track. Guess what?

It fucking sounds better. Fuck the clunks.
    It's all about discipline.

if it's AC-3 audio off a regular DVD, the purists say it ain't lossless. so it may not be your final product that's flawed, but your source.

    Yes, they're adjustable...

    That may be Nicks trouble...

I can adjust my wav sampling frequency down to 8.000khz, and bits per sample to 8...

That would naturally sound like shit...
