But the ranking system doesn't seem to make sense.

US ranked #5 in the world?

Isn't this because they play in the CONCACAF and have only one real opponent...Mexico?

With the calculation of the world rank list the FIFA considers all results of A-international matches from the last seven years,
whereby the priority of older data precipitates smaller.

In addition count apart from the plays with large tournaments (WM and continental championships, e.g. EM) also the respective

qualification plays, the portions of the FIFA Confederations Cup and all friendship games between A-national teams from the FIFA

member countries.

A computer program converts then the results from all these plays into points. The following factors have influence:
1. Victory Remis defeat,
2. Number of the gates and/or Gegentore,
3. Home or away game,
4. Depending upon meaning of the play a multiplicator is used (The WM-final gets logical-proves the highest multiplicator 2,00.

Friendship games 1.00),
5. Strength of the opponent,
6. Regional multiplicator (Europe and South America 1,00; Asia 0,90; Central America 0,86; Africa and Ozeanien 0.84).
