There's a lot about soccer/football that I like, and that I don't like. I do like the lack of commercials, and the lack of scoring has never bothered me much...other than to rip on HUGE soccer fans....
I didn't grow up with it though, so I don't think I'd ever fall into the category that most in the world do with regards to the sport...
...and while I agree that the rarity makes goals a lot sweeter...if the team I followed sucked...and barely scored (like the U.S. most of the time), I'd likely never watch....

For both England and the US I think the best you can say is that it was a win.
Right now, I'm not cofident about either team going much further.... And I find myself hoping that Germany some how manage to pull a France (sorry Natra - you're a friend but football is football and you guys have a habit of sending us home).

I like New Zealand, they are a plucky little team who certainly haven't embarrassed themselves - the result against Italy was a hell of a result. Against all the odds, they are still in with a shout of getting through. All of the pressure of the final game is on Italy to perform - Slovakia may not be such an easy game for them.

According to the BBC commentators the competition is basically over as England are now virtually certain to win it.
How can England talk so tall after a completely unspectacular three games? They scored TWICE and only won it because Capello lucked out by putting Dafoe in, in the 11th hour.

Sorry I seemed to have misremembered that a bit.
When I checked it was just 1 Russian student who was stabbed in the neck in Brighton when he was mistaken for a German and they survived.
There were near riots in central London as well with German car makes attacked, it was mainly glossed over at the time because as hosts a good spin on things was put out.
Again I mainly blame the media with the tabloids on overdrive that Summer whipping the unwashed into a frenzy.
We'll see how it goes this weekend, maybe because English expectations are lower it won't get so bad.
