This is by far the best pic I've seen of it. It's just an echoplex correct?

HA!
I know he used an Echoplex...I think an old univox echo unit was in the bomb shell....
Nice find!
Nice pic! Is that the Univox and the Variac in the bombshell, or is the whole Variac usage live thing a myth?

Nah...no myth.
That was from the 1978 tour. He had the same getup when I saw them in Seattle in September of '78.
I've never seen that pic ... funny shit indeed I was 3 in 78' ...
Broken down n' dirty dressed in rags ...
Me too...
A variac looks like this...
Edward NEVER used one live...
Thanks for the clarification...
No echoplex, or variac in that picture.
I do see two of those univox things, one with cords pluged in,and I guess the other is a spare.
The other two cords are AC power for both units.
What did they do, just roll that thing out there for the solo?,or was that up there the whole time?
...It's on the stage in the '78 Fresno 'Eruption' boot. He manipulates the speed on the Univox Echo at the end of the solo....get that vid if you can....Eddie's on fucking FIRE!!
You are right.....He used at least two.Originally posted by ELVIS

That's the one! He's KILLING.....Thanks for posting that, BFS! You rule!
Didn't know that existed until a few months ago...too bad they didn't tape the whole show.Originally posted by jhale667

He is killing.
I just got that one recently too...first time I saw it I had a total flashback to being 13 and hearing the LP version for the 1st time...I was grinning ear to ear, couldn't HELP myself....that's the shit.
Sure is!
Tis a Univox Echo...It stayed up there the whole show I do believe.
That Marshall in the pic with the two Variacs looks to be a metal-faced Super Lead...it looks brand new. Definitely not his prized 12000 series "plexi" Super Lead.
True, but perhaps that photo is from the period where the 'grail' was LOST in shipping after their 1st Japanese tour? Supposedly he was using newer Marshalls, Laneys and WHATEVER until the original one resurfaced....:confused:Originally posted by BrownSound1

Yeah, I remember him saying his original got lost in shipping, but thankfully he got it back.
You know, I still don't understand what happened in Ed's head that made him want to get away from that tone. I mean, how can he think his tone with the 5150 amps was better than the original brown sound? Perhaps it was a durability issue, in that he felt that lugging around vintage amps was too big of a risk, and I can see that point. However, now there are plenty of replica manufacturers of those old Marshalls out there now, and there is really no excuse for shit ass tone. The replicas certainly sound better than the official Marshall reissues.
Well this is the 78 japan tour, so all this stuff including the "prized superlead" got lost.Originally posted by jhale667

This is '86
I know...I know...That's not the plexi...This is
That depends on if you take what eddie says as the truth.
If you look real close, right under Dave's balls, there are two plexi heads.
One is raw wood, and the other is black.
One of these is the " prized superlead"
Nice! BTW, I've tried a Plexi reissue...not impressed. Wanted to be, but wasn't. I want to get something along those lines for a little more tonal variety...I'm going to check out some of the replicas...

The people at Splawn claim they can make ANY Marshall sound virtually the same...
The specialize in the old Van Halen tone...
I have a purple tolex plexi reissue that sounds really nice, even compared to my '69 Super Bass and '73 Super Lead...
I'm thinking of selling my Super Bass...
They're just going for so much money, I can hardly resist...
I don't mind getting $2,500 for an amp I paid 300 bucks for...
Metroamp If you want an EXACT replica of any period Plexi, then this is the place to go. George Metropoulos, owner of the company, is the shiznit. You can have him build it or build it yourself. The dude is super nice and goes out of his way for his customers.
Check out this review of his latest offering... http://www.legendarytones.com/MetroAmp68Plex1.htm
A friend of mine is having a Metro built even as we speak...I'm interested to hear it.
When I get mine built I'll post some clips. I'm having to buy a bit at a time, and I won't build it until I have everything.
Interesting...
So, I suppose you can buy one of their PTP boards or board kits and retrofit it into a reissue ??
Could EVH have replicated the Brownsound on any old equipment laying around? With say, a completely stock Strat? Back in the glory days. SRV's strings were all jacked up.....EVH played' a piece of shit by all accounts.Originally posted by BrownSound1

I play very little, and very poorly. I've gotten different opinions from different folks. One person commented that EVH's stuff was all a bunch of trickery, and that RR blows him away. The best guitarist I know personally (MASTODON) commented that whatever effects EVH used back in the day didn't matter....it was all about Eddie's METHOD.
All I can think of is the line in Appacolypse Now where the Sheen dipshit goes, "I don't see any method."
The old adage is 'Your tone is 80% your fingers, 20% your rig'.
Apparently, they sell the shells and everything...colored tolex and whatnot...no reissue purchase needed. I'll ask my friend.Originally posted by ELVIS

Better late than never, found the pic I knew I had that showed 'the bomb' from the VHII sessions....note the echoplex on the floor in front of him...
Well if someone had one of the reissue Plexis then a PTP board and a new output tranny would be the way to go. Hell you've already got the head case and chassis, then might as well make them usefull. As far as myself, I just wanted to build it from scratch...nothing would be cooler than to have someone ask you about your amp, and you say, "I built that bitch."Originally posted by jhale667

There are several guys on there who own or have owned just about every amp you can think of. Several of them had Splawn amps and ditched them after getting a Metroamp. I know there are other Plexi kits out there, but I think the Metroamp is the ultimate replica....and they are priced fairly.
On the EVH tone....yes it is true that a lot of it comes from his fingers, or actually from the way he attacks the strings. However, you aren't going to tell me that the "brown sound" would have sounded the way it did if he had been using a Roland Jazz Chorus amp. Think about it...I doubt EVH's technique is much different now than it was back then, but he sounds different going through a Peavey rather than his old Marshall.
Well, maybe I'll do just that to my purple plexi reissue...
But, do I need to change my output transformer ??

Actually, I get to say that every time someone asks about my guitars
Yeah, I just meant that in the sense of if you went out and duplicated Ed's shit exactly, you'd still sound like YOU playing through Ed's rig. Kind of like the old story about Ted Nugent and other players of the day claiming Ed had some "secret weapon" pedal, and that he wasn't really that good...Ed's roadie let Ted play through Ed's rig when they toured together and as the quote goes "You know what? Still sounded like TED."On the EVH tone....yes it is true that a lot of it comes from his fingers, or actually from the way he attacks the strings. And yeah, Elvis, supposedly Metro sells a better transformer too....
I knew what you meant jhale...
Metro sells their own Dagnall clone as well as transformers made by Heyboer and Mercury Magnetics.
Well, believing that a transformer has something to do with tone is crazy...
So's thinking a brand of battery in your pedals can make a difference, but people get away with that....ahem..Eric Johnson! ...cough...Originally posted by ELVIS

Personally, if I were to buy into either theory I'd go with the transformer one...I met one dude who swore Johnson was right, and claimed the best sound, regardless of brand, came from a dying battery in your pedal ! "That's when they sound the best, man---right before they crap out!" I'm sure anyone else in here who has ever worked in a guitar shop can relate to the customer that just rambles on about the most INSANE shit, and you just kind stand there like "Really? You don't say...?"
