Howz bout a Rod Stewart gem? I always liked You're Insane and Every Picture Tells a Story. I know, one is solo and one is Faces, but still Rod. I also always thought that Black Betty would be torn to shreds by them. It's got a spot for a drum spotlight, a guitar solo, and Dave would just kill on vocals.

If they were gonna do a Faces tune, this might work........

The Georgia Satellites recorded a cover of "Every Picture Tells A Story" for their first album, and it worked quite well. But I just can't hear Dave Roth singing "Spent some time feelin' inferior, standing in front of my mirror..." with any real conviction. In fact, it would be downright impossible to believe.

I hear ya.... Dave - expressing even a moment of self-doubt, ever? Not likely...

I can see...and even hear MCR...and Born to be Wild...

Well...I can hear Dave singing it...at this stage...not necessarily the band playing it. It just feels a bit cliche...but doesn't it all at this point?

"I'm So Glad" worked well on VH too...though I think "Girl Gone Bad" was the "I'm So Glad" of Van Halen...

If they must... dig into the old Savoy Brown catalog like Dave did on his last album. Fit's Dave's voice perfectly and Ed's overdue for an old school Blues adventure!!

In the same vein... If they need a keyboard based song that showcases Ed's love of the ivories, then nothin better than Booker T & the MG's hit Green Onions!! Showcase the keyboard, room for some funky Ed guitar time and a bass line simple enough even Junior could master it with a good backing-track safety net!! Time for a classic Diamond Dave video reprise ala California Girls -vs- Pretty Woman to showcase this... Think of the possibilities...

I just have to point out that they don't *have* to do a cover. Half of the six pack didn't have covers either (WACF, FW, and 1984).

Might as well do another Kinks tune if they're going to have covers on the new album. How about "All Day and All of the Night"? Imagine what that would sound like Van Halenized?

They could really rock out Hush by Deep Purple. I also love their version of The Rover, would be awesome to get a studio cut of it.

How 'bout something from the Top 40 charts?

That's how they started... And it would be a decent challenge for them.
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

True that, in fact I heard when DLR said no to Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World ad campaign they settled for this guy:

... okay it's decided then: two keyboard songs (pending ford's approval), one cover song, and as far as the rest of the album is concerned select five or six of the best unrecorded originals composed in the early years to capture that classic vh sound. and of course there's tons of killer unreleased songs -- any vh bootleg collector can attest to that ...

... title for another thread: which five unreleased/unrecorded early vh compositions woud you like to hear souped up for the next release?

I been thinking about what cover they could do and have always thought rob halford had a pretty good metal voice. even though his way of keeping his voice in prime shape is getting it sprayed with double-nut throat lotion.

Shit, why don't they do goddamn "Friends in Low Places".

Because that's gonna happen a lot sooner than any cover of any shitty long forgotten hairbands who were third rate Van Halen imitators in the first place.

I want 'em to cover this.

    Kick arse, motherfucker.

I always loved that Leo's eating a fuckin' banana in the album cover. How cool is that? It's "I don't give a shit about anything. I have more fame, money, success & pussy than you'll ever have, so fuck off.." cool.

Do the sisters know anyone at all? That is the question.

They probably think they're the only ones entitled to play music. Little fuckstains.

Dave covering Leonard Cohen would be fuckin' badass. Even when I was young & stupid & though you could only be a badass if you played fast & heavy, I considered Leonard Cohen badass. That's how badass that fucker is.

    Cheers! :bottle:

I think a cover of Black Night by Deep Purple would be cool.It has that sorta blue's vibe to it that i think dave could do with ease, plus there could be some crazy EVH improv in the solo
I really love you baby, I love what you've got

Or Dave can stop sitting around waitin on them, and just whip out a version of Laughing Len's 'Sisters of Mercy', to see if they get the message:

    Oh the sisters of mercy,
they are not departed or gone.
    They were waiting for me
when I thought that I just can't go on.
And they brought me their comfort
and later they brought me this song.
Oh I hope you run into them,
you who've been travelling so long.

substitute 'travelling' in the last line with 'waiting' ... and hey presto

Another one of those classic genius posts, sure to generate responses. You log on the next day to see what your witty gem has produced to find no one gets it and 2 knotheads want to stick their dicks in it... Well played, sir!!

    Thumbs up

I like the idea of them pulling out a cover they did back in the club days as a kind of nod to "the old days"....

I am sure they could kick much ass on this song now...

“Why do people say "grow some balls"? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding” ― Betty White
