You have to question the Hall of Fame's definition of rock and roll.
Some of the inductee's could be classified as such, but I guess if Prince can get in ...
Van Halen's induction will have nothing to do with Sammy being in the band, their legacy for the Hall will be from the first 6 albums.
I think Prince falls under the general umbrella of rock and roll. I mean look at the motown acts that got in, I wouldn't call it "rock and roll" but they definitely deserve to be enshrined somehow.
I agree Van Halen will make it only because of the original 6, my only point is that reuniting with Hagar brings the name back out there again to kind of remind people that they once existed. I'm firmly convinced getting into the R&R HOF, along with the almighty dollar, are the two reasons for this tour. I bet Ed's a bit miffed he didn't get in first ballot, seems like a pretty proud dickhead to me.

Let me make a prediction and trust me this is what will happen. Eddie, Alex, Mike, Dave & sammy will all accept their award and induction into the R'N'R Hall Of Fame in 2005 (hopefully) or 2006 (definitely). However when it is time to play... Dave will not be involved. This has happened in the past. Credence Clearwater Revival was inducted and John Fogerty played by himself. he hates his former bandmates and refused to play with them.
Trust me this is how it will be.
