Wedding Bells Are Buzzing
Thursday January 05, 2006 11:00AM PT
Always a Bridesmaid...
From the looks of the Buzz, many couples solidified their relationships over the holidays. Whether the hopeful dude put the engagement ring in a glass of bubbly or got down on bended knee, marriage and engagements were in the air. Searches on "weddings" jumped 42% over the last week as excited, newly engaged people hit the Search box in a frenzy of wedding planning.
Three-fourths of all wedding queries come from the ladies. While that's not really a surprise, we're shocked the figure wasn't even higher -- say 99%. A wedding can be a huge undertaking for anyone, guy or gal, so we'll walk you through the process fueled by Buzz power...
First off, you need a "wedding checklist" (+271%) to ensure you don't forget to shop for something as all-important as wedding dresses" (+39%). After that, you need to make sure you have the right "wedding shoes" (+364%) and a killer "wedding hairstyle" (+89%) -- preferably an updo. Once the outfit is properly sorted, you can move on to researching "wedding cakes" (+86%) and "wedding flowers" (+65%). If you want people to show up, you'll need classy and elegant "wedding invitations" (+90%). And don't forget to include return envelopes with the invitations, because that would be a significant breach of "wedding etiquette" (+548%). After all, if your guests feel that your etiquette is lacking, they might not buy you any "wedding gifts" (+71%). Heaven forbid!
Beyond those spikes, we found a hope chest full of other wedding queries on the rise... Wedding Bouquets (+117%)
Wedding Centerpieces (+296%)
Wedding Decorations (+143%)
Wedding Favors (+89%)
Wedding Receptions (+310%)
Wedding Vows (+21%)
Modern Bride (+58%)
David's Bridal (+73%)
Bridal Gowns (+63%)
Bridesmaid Dresses (+77%)

For Your Consideration...
Thursday January 05, 2006 3:00AM PT
Alone in the Dark
The dawn of a new year brings many things. There are hangovers to bemoan and bowl games to watch, but members of the illustrious Motion Picture Academy also have a year's worth of films to "consider." The recent ads in trade magazines prove studios are willing to sacrifice dignity for victory. Duh.
In honor of this parade of poor taste, we assembled a list of films we'd like the Oscar community to mull over before rolling out the red carpet. We couldn't resist the chance to parody this annual charade of sleazy business masked as high art. So, let the pandering begin!
Dear Academy: For Your Consideration...
Best Screenplay Based on a Video Game: Alone in the Dark
Competition: Sadly, BloodRayne didn't make the 2005 cutoff. Perhaps next year.
Random Fact: Both films were directed by Uwe Boll. We smell a lifetime achievement award, Uwe!
Buzz Score at Its Peak: Top 1,100 searches
Best Use of Jessica Alba's "Talents": Into the Blue
Competition: Fantastic Four and Sin City
Random Fact: Don't let his acting fool you -- Blue costar Paul Walker is NOT dead.
Buzz Score at Its Peak: Top 800 searches
Best Film Concerning Law Enforcement Agencies Bickering Over Jurisdiction: Hostage
Competition: Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous
Random Fact: Approximately 78% of folks who saw the Hostage trailer rolled their eyes.
Buzz Score at Its Peak: Top 8,000 searches
Best Actor of All Time: Paris Hilton in House of Wax
Competition: Tara Reid in Alone in the Dark
Random Fact: Years from now, we're going to look back at Paris as this generation's Katherine Hepburn. Only without the talent or underpants.
Buzz Score at Her Peak: Top 10 searches
Best Film About Extremely Large Families: Cheaper by the Dozen 2
Competition: Yours, Mine & Ours
Random Fact: Talk about special effects -- Cheaper's trailer shows Steve Martin injuring his testicles in a humorous way. Not only were they not real testicles, the scene isn't even comical.
Buzz Score at Its Peak: Top 3,000 searches

Our Two Cents on Postal Prices
Wednesday January 04, 2006 11:00AM PT
Postage Stamps
You might want to sit down for this. Starting January 8, everyone in the U.S. must fork over an extra two cents to mail a letter. At the risk of sounding like Andy Rooney, didn't postal rates just go up? We'd write a letter to the editor and complain, but we can't afford to mail it.
From the looks of Search, we're not the only cheapskates concerned with the two-cent spike. A whole 39 cents to mail a measly letter? What would Kevin Costner's character in The Postman say? We can only speculate as we never saw the film, but we suspect he'd be pretty darn upset. Hell, he delivered the mail for free, didn't he?
But enough about KC's misunderstood masterpiece on post-apocalyptic mailmen -- you visit us for the scoop on Search. With stamp prices on the rise, the following are spiking: "postal rate increase" (+76%), "new postal rates" (+46%), and "postal rates" (+100%). Searches on "stamps" are up 68%, and "price of stamps" has appropriately enough gone through the roof. Once the new rate goes into effect and bills and birthday cards affixed with inadequate postage are returned to senders, searches on two-cent stamps will likely take off too.
Of course, aside from grandparents and letter bombers, these days most folks keep in touch via email. Paying bills online is becoming more popular as well, so perhaps this incoming increase marks a good time to sign up for your bank's online bill payment system. That way you can skip the stamps altogether. After all, 39 cents saved is 39 cents earned. Take that, Postmaster General!

A Bumper Crop

Rollergirls
January is time for starting over, and television networks are reworking their schedules to welcome back old friends and shuffle in the new shows.
VH1 continues to mine the boundless ore of "celebreality." Its latest additions to the lineup include yet another edition of Celebrity Fit Club (+1,863%) and a new show starring reality vet Flavor Flav (+4,591%). There's nothing like a former rap star trainwreck. If you were enraptured by StrangeLove, you're sure to enjoy his new Flavor of Love.
Fox is ready to rumble with all comers thanks to its one-two punch of 24 (+1,694%) and American Idol (+47%). These two stalwarts of the Fox sked are already gaining momentum in Buzz, and once they hit the air, we're sure they'll reclaim their rightful spots in our top 20 TV shows.
Early Buzz returns are also in on A&E's latest reality romp. It might not be as successful as Dog the Bounty Hunter (+493%), but Rollergirls slammed home a 189% gain in yesterday's searches. And we're behind any show that serves to boost flagging interest in the long-forgotten sport of roller derby (+154%). Roll on, sweet roller girls.

At the end of the year, we know it's healthy and wise to look back upon the things that really matter over the last 12 months. We sweat the details here at the Buzz, and we know firsthand that it's the little things that truly count -- lil' things to be more precise.
When it comes to the lil', the buzz is big and strong, and we predict that won't change in the coming year with the steady success of rappers like Lil' Wayne and up-and-comers like Lil' Boosie. We wonder if any of these lil's have made a New Year's resolution to grow on up? In any case, to celebrate the lil' things in life, here's the top 10 Lil's in Search... Lil' Wayne

A Helping Hand
Thursday December 29, 2005 3:00AM PT
Season of Giving
Perhaps it's the inevitable outcome of trying to cram a sleighful of loot into an already crowded closet. Or it's the bleak prospect of another new year strumming the what-have-I-accomplished blues. Either way, with searches for "charities" and "donations" on the rise across the Buzz, the days since Christmas have clearly inspired many to donate to local nonprofits or lend a helping hand.
Yesterday, online Samaritans led Goodwill (+170%) and the Salvation Army (+124%) into Buzz's top 500 movers. Queries for "goodwill stores," "shopgoodwill.com," and "salvation army donation" multiplied, while searches by folks looking to "volunteer" grew by 7%.
Judging by last year's Buzz, we're also expecting a surge in "car donations" as we inch toward 2006. As for the rest of the most popular endowments researched online, let's just say that all searchers looking to bequeath something to someone are not necessarily philanthropic. Nonetheless, we reached into the deep pockets of Buzz and came up with the most popular ones... Car Donation
Organ Donation
Purple Heart Donations
Blood Donation
Egg Donation
Sperm Donation
Plasma Donation
Bone Marrow Donation
Donate Furniture
Clothes Donation
Toy Donations
Katrina Donations
Donate Hair
Cell Phone Donation
