    Question Roth Radio music selection.

After about a month of listening, what do you hard-rockin' fuckers think about all the loops and shit?

    Are you surprised?

    Off-ended?

Club Dave...like backstage with disco lights circa nineteen eighty two.

Now, you don't have to admit to liking Disco or anything...just speak to that.

DLR claims he and EVH got robbed at gunpoint after a EWAF show.

Was this really the beginning of the end? Did that defining moment manifest itself in the 'Beat It' solo years later?

    Make it count. Dig deep.

    Go.

Not surprised at all of the critics and hear say over Dave whatsoever. I think those of us who follow his career and "Get Dave" know this was all to be expected by the non-believers of his talent, skills and those who envy the seat he's sitting in as well as having a way to vocalize his opinions on various issues.

As far as the Dave/Ed robbery at gunpoint incident, it happened in 1976 or '77....before Van Halen soared, so I don't think it had any impact on their relationship.

Club Dave...not surprised. I like that fact that the guy pulls his style from many forms of music. Not surprised about the disco stuff in the sense that if you read CFTH, the drama he experienced as a toddler to age 5, his legs were in braces and he wanted to run around and dance like the other kids...so I think it was something in him.

The dude Rocks, is Thought Provoking and Talented as Hell...what more can you ask for ? He's a leader...not a follower. I dig him.

Was Dave's casual/overbearing appreciation of the R&B vibe a big part of "The Fury"?

With the right input, this could be good.

Could very well be...BUT on that note, I've always wondered about the fact that if you watched the "Early VH Years" DVD where Alex and BassPlayer say the R&B song "Dancing in the Streets" is NOT Van Halen - that was Roth's idea....yet in the end for the Best of Vol. 2, VH includes it ! Contradiction or what? They could have used "Little Dreamer" or "House of Pain" or anything else. AL totally went back on his word and DLR had nothing to do with this compilation at the Vol. 2 timeframe.

But yes, I think the musical direction created conflict among DLR, Ed & Al.

So, in theory....nothing that happens before astronomical success has any bearing on what lies ahead?

    This is some sub-Freudian shit.

What about the Vaudeville stuff....were the hard rockin' fuckers' lookin' for their roto toms' and finger-boardin' as a rebuttal?

    This is grate.

No such thing as thinking too much.

I don't know about Dave, but what I am attracted to in 70's disco is the FUNK it is made of. I have never heard anything by Nile Rodgers that I didn't like. As cheesy as some of that genre of music got, it always had a jammin' rhythm section that grooved and you can't get that anymore - it doesn't come out of a machine.

A machine might enhance a groove in some respects but you have to have a heart beat connected to a brain connected to your limbs and fingers touching an instrument made of some kind of wood to truly FUNK. I miss it in modern music. I would rather listen to classic disco than what disco has become today any day of the week. I have Chic and the Pointer Sisters in my collection. Laugh if you like - but for a drummer or a bass player not to be able to funk is a severe handicap.

And Dave is playing diverse styles of music on his show - reflecting his personality. There is disco but there is also classic rock and roll. I heard a Donald Fagan tune in those loops; some Harry Connick, Jr. And I have no problem with the loops themselves. I think Brian does an adequate job making the loops interesting. Even though there was some criticism of his playing in another thread, I think he does OK considering his role is limited to playing in the background behind a discussion.

Of course, I would rather hear Jeff Beck, Steve Morse or Frank Gambale ripping over those loops if I wasn't trying to pay attention to the discussion.

The Silver Cuntvention loop was my favorite. Maybe it was Boney M.....I can't remember.

Anyways, in some roundabout way, you can start to see some aks grinding or paralleliums in the music selection.

    He's a vindictive motherfucker.

Is he tryin' to dis-enfranchize the hard-rockin' callers'?

    Go.

Very possible. If you want to look at a more recent vaudeville style that ROTH tapped into, I'd say it was the July 4th Boston Pops Celebration. I know that AVH thought Roth's appearance was ridiculous.

I think Roth is open to ideas, but has a strong opinion of what he pictures in his mind as good or successful and therefore, I do believe the brothers rebelled against his idea of the direction of VH music. I'm sure that dealing with Roth was no easy jam session. Listening to him on morning radio, getting to know his personality, this guy has an eye for detail and is constantly observing and thinking.

Take one look at the video "Hot for Teacher" - you can tell the guys are totally uncomfortable and not having fun in the tuxedo scene dancing and ROTH looks like a natural. Roth was thinking Hollywood, while the guys were thinking backyard parties.

Not sure this answers you, but this is thought provoking.

No - he is just playing the music he likes. I don't think he is even thinking about that. When you are 1/4 or more the creator of some of the most ass-kicking rock and roll ever made, you have standing to play whatever you want on your own radio show and no one can touch you! Additionally, the dude is 51 or 52 years old. As you grow older you mellow a bit - we are all probably proof of that. I still love rock and roll and I still love it loud - but I don't listen to it exclusively and with the frequency at 36 like I used to at 23! Am I the only one?

Funny you mention the Pops performance....the image of that fat trombone player jumping is priceless.

    It's the cuntpletion backwards principle.

This could be a sticky if somebody kicks the horn section next to hell square up the cranium.

That's the thing though....Club Dave was always disco beats. Maybe the loops are to ward off the burnt-out 80's folks?

What's to hate? I said above that I actually like some disco - if its more funk than disco - like Chic, for instance.

Why would Dave want to ward off any audience? At this point, and this is not a commentary on how well or poorly he is performing, but he should be trying to pull in as much audience from as many diverse sources as possible. Believe me, that first week he was on the air I had to call in 5 or 6 times before I got through the screener. My point is that if he wants to ward off anyone, he can do it without affecting his ratings by just not letting a particular type of caller on the phone. It has been two or three weeks since he has got any calls criticizing him.

Dave has said over and over again that the music he plays on the show is his own personal collection. He has said that he made the loops himself - I think he picked the music that he wanted to hear hoping it would go over well but not really caring too much about it.

    Now we're getting somewhere.

Fucking Dave.....picking the music he wanted to hear.

It's @ the very foundations of CVH.

Is that why Poundcake doesn't sound like Dirty Movies?

I don't have the answers, but questions abound.

BTW, I've been on the show twice....with a heavy gumba accent.

Really? Yeah there are a lot of spokes in the wheel in Hotlanta! And CVH is certainly hard rock - but there are songs that grove and swing - not to mention some of Dave's later solo material. Even on VH1: Show Your Love - Paul Anka could do a big band version of that!

Dig deep.

    Go.

The beat he used that worked the best for me on the show was the slide guitar loop but I couldn't give you the source of it.
Tasty as hell though, and a close second would be the Chaka Kahn riffs.
The thing I am surprised about is that there aren't more hard rock bumpers on the show.

I don't know why he would distance himself from a genre of music he helped pioneer.....doesn't add up

You fuckers just don't get it, like Bat said...if you don't know Dave then you won't know his music and the way he thinks. I dig all the music he plays, most of which is to go with the theme of the show and Hutch downloads that shit right there. Its "Club Dave" not Club Van Halen. Right now i'm listening to a techno version of Enya, should I be put on the stand for that? Now I got Johnny Cash thumping through the speakers. Oh no, call the cops!!!!
If you support Dave then you support all his decisions in life. Thats it!
And to you Roth spammers out there, please explain to us why you take time out of your day to pour hate into some where your not welcome. Go visit Sammys site, your all very creative, use your talents there and then go fuck yourself with a chainsaw!!!!
    Peace OUT!

Maybe the Tiki bunker started in Indiana? How the FUCK did the Van Halens' get here?
