Question Have you had a change of heart on Roth Radio?

OK.....so it's still only been a matter of weeks since the debut of Roth Radio.

However, I'm getting a vibe that even the most hardcore Roth Radio advocates have opened the door to the possibility that it may not be working out.

Let's jump in the wayback machine to October, 2005. Click the link to see a thread started shortly after the official announcement of DLR replacing Stern. Look at the posts (especially if you were one of the posters) and see how you feel today.

    http://www.rotharmy.com/forums/showt...0&pagenumber=1

Many came out with guns blazing saying it was a "great move" for Dave. Others were a bit more pragmatic and withheld judgement. Others (myself, Mezro and some others) stated it was a bad idea and made predictions on how long it would last.

Has your initial support waned and you find yourself hoping that Roth Radio is nearly over? Or, conversely, were you against Roth radio and have since been converted into a believer by what you've heard so far?

Be honest. Changing your position is not a sign of weakness.

I'm not that "excited" anymore when I tune in to know the man live on the "other side". but if I have the time...I listen and enjoy...

    Good thread Dutch.

I'm not as "excited" as I was initially either. I still listen every morning and I think that the show is getting some legs and they are obviously trying different things out to see what works. The most interesting part of the show so far for me personally was the other day when Dave had Johnny Damon in for the interview. I'm a big Yankee fan and that was something I enjoyed listening too. Having guests everyday and hearing their story with Daves wit on their subject is a recipe for success IMO. Be it sports figures, actors and actresses or musicians. Get somebody like James Gandolfini in there and talk about the new season of the Sopranos. Get new aspiring bands to play in the studio. Get Jennifer Aniston in there and ask her questions. GENERATE news about the show with the show. Dave is a master coversationalist. Why not exploit that with interesting guests? This was the point of hiring Dave wasn't it? The boring part is just listening to whoever is in the studio chime in with their opinion on page 6 news everyday. The end result is that you get the same show, the same thoughts etc. Aside from a few snipits of VH history and the Damon chat...its been slow to me. The other day he said that the show was a cross between Led Zeppelin and the David Letterman show...that is exactly what I think it should be! The bad part is....the David Letterman show part of that equation has only been there a few times.

But, like I said...I'm still listening everyday and certainly hope Dave and the show succeed.

I listen to recaps on the net every night. I think the show is getting better and it's good to see he is getting good guests(damon, omarosa) I hope it picks up and I am rooting for Dave because it's smart radio. Dave is well spoken, you actually learn things from his show as well as laugh. Stern and most other talk show hosts just blab and tell stupid jokes most of the time.

Even if it doesn't last, I don't think it was a mistake. If you don't try something, you've already failed.

As a fan, I'm enjoying hearing him every day. Some things bore me; some things annoy me; some things confuse me. It's not perfect, but it's getting better in a lot of ways.

I made no judgement in the beginning. I don't think this will hurt his current music career of playing 10 small shows a year. LOL. I don't think he will lose fans over this, and has probably gained some from some of the comments I've heard from callers.

Even if it tanks, he won't be any worse off.

Dave still has my interest. Someone needs to work on getting him good guests. I think Dave shines brighter when he is talking to interesting people.

Maybe Roth is too intelligent for some people, maybe fart jokes and beeing obnoxious is entertainment to some.

Roth is topical, bear trap sharp, razor witt and the most honest media personality in the US.

I have not missed a show and I look forward to each and every one of them. The guy is a fucking genius in his own inimitable way.

Kudos for this post. Also to DG. My thoughts after having spoken to some entertainment people, that what has been lacking (and this position was just recently filled...) is the Radio Creative Consultant, the equivalent of Gary Dell'Abate's role for the Howard Stern Show...someone to aggressively with Dave, planning the shows, getting the main-stream A-list type guests for Dave, such as today's show with Joel Siegel, the movie critic from Good Morning America.

Howard Stern may collaborate with an idea for the show with Gary, but he depends on Gary for the direction of the show and the guests who either show up at the studio or call in, Dave has not had this "position" filled by anyone, therefore, he's been carrying the weight on his own shoulders.

I'm in as a ROTH RADIO listener for the long-haul....for the duration of this "Pit-Stop" for Dave. I do believe the shows will continue to get more colorful and enjoyable. Let's face facts...we've all been discussing this for quite some time..a month exactly.....no one (including Stern) had their "schtick" developed and had all the kinks smoothed out in 4 weeks....No Way.

The shark-biting critics who are hoping for Roth's failure are the voices of pure pessimism. So be it....

Like we said from the beginning...ROTH is getting his groove on and developing his style and it's definitely worth a great listen for those of us who appreciate not getting a sugar-coated opinion, but rather, a genuine, honest, naked opinion sprinkled with a dose of great humor.

    Dave is the Real Deal.

My ears are glued to FreeFM as long as Dave wants to speak to me thru the medium of RADIO.

    Dave is an old man

This guy needs to get the fuck on the road and play some rock and roll! And not at some fuckin casino!
I saw him at Casino in Orilla Ontario Canada over a year ago.
I saw him in 1984 at maple leaf gardens in Toronto.
Eat em and smile in 1987 or whenever that was as well as the skyscraper tour.
The casino show last year was the most depressing night ever.
My buddies and I went in with a bottle and some pot..
We spark up and the guy infront of me turns around and says "could you guys put that out my wife is pregnant". My how times have changed. It took everything in me not to say "ya and your babys gonna look like me you prick" Everyone was seated like we were at a Meg Ryan flick.. fuck.. I was standing up and shouting "EVERYBODY UP" I was getting dirty looks from the people around me.
fuck...why would this bastard play a fuckin casino when one hour away he could play at a kickin club in Toronto where we could enjoy a drink and get obnoxious? I dunno... pathetic.. probably the same fuckin voice that told him to do a radio show told him to play the casino
    any thoughts

The show is getting better. Guests are coming in. Dave's getting into a grove...a little repetitive - sugarfree Red Bull, I get it already. His studio friends are becoming more vocal and they're finally letting Brian get into the conversations. My opinion as a fan is that I hope the show continues.

However, if he doesn't tour for the duration of the show I'll be very disappointed. Dave, for me, is first and foremost a singer and frontman. My hope right now is that being a radio personality may further all parts of his career and that we'll see both some new music and some limited touring (was it just me or did Dave mention a country song he recorded...then backed off and said something about waiting a couple of months for it - this was on Tuesday or Wednesday's show??).

The real question about Dave's survival in the radio business remains in Infinity/CBS's hands. Were they prepared to give Dave time to build an audience or were they expecting immediate results? Are they losing or gaining advertising revenues and what time frame did they have for the show to start making some $$$? We don't know the answers to these questions so making predictions on his success based on reviews is senseless. Initial reviews are going to be mixed and if you focus on the negative then Dave will obviously look bad. Hopefully CBS has resonable expectations and confidence in Dave and they give him a legitimate chance. Otherwise, he'll be gone in short order to be replaced, I'm sure, by some Stern clone who'll likely appeal more to the masses in the short term. Trouble is I don't think these types will have the longevity that Dave will have if given the chance to mature as a radio personality.

    Roth Radio a success

    Yo

People are looking at Roth Radio all wrong. I hear other talk show guys bash Roth saying his show is weak, there aren't any good guests--and then these same hosts go on to whip my ass with fart jokes, in studio strippers(is that good radio??), and one local Dallas guy wasted 15 Minutes talking about his income tax return and crying that he should get more $$ back.

It's hypocritical, and the people that criticize Roth are either worse, or have been just as guilty as Roth in some of his rookie blunders.

The critical fans have been so drugged up on brainless morning radio, that they can't see the greatness. You feed a person Spam for long enought, and they won't appreciate a steak.

There are issues with the show, but each one gets bettr and better..keep it up.

Unfortunately, I don't get to hear too many of Dave's shows.

But the ones I have heard recently still sound "forced" and a bit stilted.

I sense that he's just firing questions machine-gun style at his guests based on a pre-interview done by his producer(s), as opposed to asking questions he really wants the answers to.

But again...I haven't heard enough to truly judge.

    Roth on.

Thanks, DG. I received the information about the Radio Creative Consultant position being filled yesterday from a very reliable source (and good friend of DLR's) through some research supplied to me by someone I work with. My co-worker previously worked with SAG/AFTRA and is seasoned in the entertainment industry.

This associate/friend of DLR has worked with him for years and has been streaming his show like many of us and indicated that without a Creative Consultant for the show, it is very difficult for the Host to carry the entire show himself, let alone, without a co-host to bounce off opinions and conversations with. (much like Howard bounces his opinions with Robin and Artie)

As it was pointed out to me, DLR's "radio posse" are brand new to this media without the experience. Hutch is experienced, but his role is not tied into any Creative Consulting - it's more of the technical role with the music and background sounds.

It seems to make alot of sense after listening to Dave this past week. He now announces who will be calling in at a certain time, therefore, you know the upcoming topic of discussion, etc. A Creative Consultant is definitely working behind the scenes to help the Groove of the show at this point.

BTW...DLR's friend liked the idea of ours for the STAR Project, but felt the timing right now would be a challenge, since DLR's mgmt. is busy with refining his radio show and no time for extracurricular projects like ours. I will put this on the back burner for now and stay optimistic to pursue it at a later timeframe, but hopefully this year. It's ALL GOOD.

I thought he did well talking to the author of that Vegas book. He asked excellent questions and got some great info. from the guy.

Dave always sounds genuinely interested in what his guests are talking about. The same with random callers. He loves learning about people and what they do and what they think. That makes for great discussion, IMO.

I was at Casino Rama for the show. Casino crowds are often kinda fucked! With in/out privileges to the Casino floor and guests with free tickets you get a lot of bored people wandering in and out. I thought the show was great. Do a thread search for Rama and you'll find other threads that discuss it. It was popular with DLRArmy folks, I can tell you that. Oh, there's a full audio recording out there somewhere as well. Can't remember if I downloaded it from here or from jamtothis.com. Great recording and worth a download if you're a fan.

Oh, and there was a lot of dope smoking going on at Rama as well...just that most of it happened outside before the show.

I love the show now then ever before. Its great that he has different people in there joining him. Today Brian Young chimed in lots of times and he had good points.
I sure hope this show lasts forever.

How do they determine ratings?? Is there a way we can help boost ratings? I mean I listen everyday, does that help ratings or has no effect?

I've got it. 1Gb total size. Can't host a download from here. I'll have to do it from home. I'll be in touch...check your PM around 9pm EST.

    dlr on the radio

I am a longtime dlr fan, met and drank with him 4-5 times. Dave has to realize that he is in "sales" now, he has to deliver high ratings, hold an audience as long as possible. Over the last 5 weeks dave has shined, but he also goes down wrong paths,ie:talking to animal about hair styles and creams, this went on 30-40 minutes. I blame Tom Chisauno with not lining up a stellar talent coordinator, he needs more high profile guests in the stuidio, or phone. He has to move Animal out of the studio, Stern didnt have ronnie the limo driver in the studio all day and week. I predicted when dave started that he would have this huge problem, he is like an NBA player, he is uncoachable, does not listenm, can't take direction. Big Ed anderson, Ted templeman, Pete Angelus, Don Landee, evh, avh, MA, sheehan, vai. He has had falling out with all of them. It also shocks me that dave admitted he has never turned on a computer, does not surf the net, he relies on Matt and Dutch, and Hutch, and maybe his sister to report what is happening. He also admitted he does not read the paper, only page 6, this is a death knell for him.
Dave needs to build a solid sidekick, and maybe a newskick, or joke writer. The show is very disorganized, you had the lesbo emt, robin, lisa roth, danny, dallas chick, I think Hollander and Tom are frantically looking for a sidekick, they have too much money invested in dave to cut him now, needs two ratings books to see where dave goes, dave has to understand, he is not in the back of a tour bus talking to James Lomenzo and Ray Luzier, he is talking to 6-8 major markets, he needs to appeal to a broad audience, no more Paris Hilton talk, no more etcetera, etcetera. I do like his interviewing style, from bar hopper guy, to Damon, to dna guy, dave asks great open ended questions. His rock n roll stories are great, his war talk is good. I also think he should do a "open line friday" format like Rush, anything goes questions from the audience, he also needs to do mystery guests, and musical rock guests. Just a few ideas.

    Lameness hates greatness

Nathaniel_TO - dude, that shit happen to me all the time at concerts. There was a time when I could just pass the J and everyone around me would partake and be happy about it. Now every show I go to I have to hide it or people trip out. Fucking Bullshit, you're at a concert, what did you expect? No titties and no fun? I feel ya, to many uptight folks at all shows in general. I've been at a Motley Crue show and seen a chick in a b-room stall servicing the gents and then someone freaks cuz I sparked up a J. At another show I was asked to talk quieter. WTF????

The Dave Show - Today's was great I thought. Intertial momentum is finding a pace. Initially, I was shocked he wanted to do the gig and thought the first couple shows were kinda shitty. Like wine, fine with time. As for the negativity, eh. Lameness hates greatness. In the past I never listened to any morning show ever besides Stern. Morning shows are so damn gay. Now, I actually have another choice.

Maybe you should stop looking behind you and start looking ahead...

I wanna hear about your meetings with Dave.

you make some really good points

I think it all boils down to Dave making do with what he's got

He talked about the shitty conditions of the studio, for example.

    What does that tell you?

Someone over there, besides Dave, needs to start to give a shit and quick.

Dave is a natural when it comes to yapping with people. Someone needs to hook him up with people who are interesting.

I think as he goes along, more guests will want to come on the show. They will see that he has a cool style and isn't going to make them feel uncomfortable or put them on the spot.

I'm glad he didn't ask Damon about the women he cheated with. Damon would have felt uncomfortable, and that would have sent a message out to to other potential guests. Dave welcomed him to NY and talked about baseball and how it was to leave the Sox. We got some innsight on his background and what he does for training. Perfect.

Stern, for example. There are a lot of interesting people who don't want to talk to Stern because he is going to make them look and sound like idiots. Dave doesn't do that, and I think thats cool.

Soon enough, celebrities' agents will be calling Dave.

    sasha

Another point, dave has to stop sexually harassing sasha, My wife got pissed yesterday when Dave was talking with Sasha, she was surprised Infinity would let that happen this long. I am sure Tom has talked to dave about it, but that is what dave is about, he has to realize, he is not the guest on Rockline, he is the quarterback, don't forget, Dave got his first real "deskjob" at 51 yrs old, it is tough for him to change.
