I'll never forget seeing the Without You video with Ed in a joker hat dancing around with a fag in an ice cave.
At that point in time, I knew Van Halen had passed the point of no return.

It was just a bizarre video...I saw it on some "rock video" channel or program or something back when it was relatively new, say, maybe a month old...in their top 30, it was already down to 28 (based on call-in requests) after having debuted somewhere in the top 10...and they commented that it was "Just Hanging In There"...the next week it was gone completely...
You know, it's amazing that bands who have been professional as long as Van Halen had been at that point just sometimes don't realize when they've fucked up...or maybe it's just that, after having made so much money, they no longer care...
Who knows?

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!
Come on, now. That was a fantastic video! What an imaginative use of set and costume. It all works together to develop the overall theme and subtext of the video - that being "it'll be a cold day in hell before we have our credibility back!"

I remember thinking...."Didn't Ed talk about how the music was the most important thing and Dave was too concerned with dressing up and being too flashy?" Gimme a fucking break Ed. He looked like such an idiot.

Looks like a Van Halen cover band. What a fuckin shame .
I always thought Ga y Cheroney was a flaming Freddie Mercury wanna-be anyhow...

Reaction was pretty much "So, Ed didn't want to get back with Dave, so he's settled for...Gary Cherone?"
Heard the tune before I saw the video, and honestly thought it was Hagar on vocals...
Although the Van Halens blew it by not going all the way with Dave in 1996, they HAD inherited a certain amount of media attention for their activities in 1996. Too bad they chose to wait a year-and-a-half before putting out Van Halen 3 (Yeah, yeah, Eddie's hip, blah blah blah), and to have such a crappy-sounding album come out of all of it...
Van Halen 3 was really the nail in the coffin for that band. To tease the fanbase with Dave and then do an album of poo with Gary was just a mistake, and not just in hindsight, either. Someone should have been telling Eddie AT THE TIME that this was gonna be a monumental fuckup.
Then Gary quits, and the Van Halens ait until 2004 to put out three crappy rush jobs with Hagar...think the bottom line is just that Ed is spent and has a lack of energy and interest in his music. Least that's what I get from all of it. If it results from him not caring because he's already been to the top, or self-delusion in thinking that he's still important because Guitar World still sucks his cock on continues putting him on the cover (out of nostalgia for what he was doing 25 years ago) I can't say.

An astute analysis there! I did not think the joker's hat was merely a costume but more a symbol of his true nature - just a big joke!Originally posted by fe_lung

I thought so, too...I KNEW it was Cherone, but I remember thinking "Why didn't he just call Sam if he wanted Sam back? Fuck, even that would have been...well...somewhat less gay than this is..." or something to that effect.Originally posted by Terry

What makes it really funny is that I saw Cherone some months later, I think it was a month or so before it was announced that he was out, on some news program as it was ending...might have been Bill O'Reilly or something (:confused, don't know why he was on it...
BUT he had longer, blonde, curly hair.
And I thought to myself "Well, Ed's done the impossible - he's fucking cloned a human being".
You know what?
Gary should use this as the cover to his next album...call it "The III Extreme Passions of the Cherone"...
That'd be grate.

And as much of a miscalculation as the whole Van Halen 3 period was, it totally SHINED compared to Van Halen 2004.Originally posted by bueno bob

Yeah, I was aware when I first heard Without You that it was new Van Cherone track, too, but for the life of me it sounded like Hagar was still there on vocals upon first listen...
But at least Cherone got the band to dust off some long neglected CVH stuff live when they toured...think the dude just got placed into a bad situation. I mean, it would've been hard enough to step into the frontman position in 1996 regardless. Was an extra burden having to do it after everyone got hyped to see Roth back full-time with the band again, followed by a bunch of interviews showing Ed for the prick that he is. Pretty much came off like Ed teased everyone with what they wanted, then gave them the finger and said they were gonna settle for whatever Ed wanted to give them, and by the way here's our new lead singer and it isn't Dave. I know it's not what you want, but it's my band so like it or leave it.
If I were Gary, I would've realized just from the fan reaction to CVH not going all the way in 1996 that nothing I was gonna do with the band was going to be well-received, and I would've bailed. Because what did the whole Van Halen 3 thing do for Gary career-wise in the long run?
If the circumstances that Cherone entered the band weren't enough to raise doubts in his mind, then hearing that first playback of How Many Say I and finding out it was gonna be on the new record should have that Spider sense tingling.
Yeah, the first time I heard the tune I thought fuck that sounds like Sam!
Not the worst video they did post-1984 (Top of the World anyone?), but it's just so obvious that when Dave left, Van Halen as a visual entity would never be as interesting, or as cool, again.
I'll never forget the letdown I felt when I read Cherone was the new singer. At first I didn't know who he was, then the journalist stated he was best known for the song More than Words! Suddenly I remembered!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I agree with ya Terry that at least Cherone was prepared to do CVH, and give that era its due respect. Unlike Hagar. Cherone's a far better lyricist than Hagar and if they'd done an album of killer rockers it might have worked. Then again, without Dave they don't have it in them to pull that off. I think a lot of people were just glad to see the end of Van Hagar
They passed the point of no return when eddie was at claudio's getting his lamborghini fixed and he came across sambo who just so happened to be getting his lamborghini fixed as well...Originally posted by Nitro Express
