The following item comes to us courtesy of today's edition of the New York Post:

David Lee Roth says he was ready to deliver a beat-down to his fellow fired VAN HALEN frontman Sammy Hagar after Hagar trashed him on PAGE SIX a while back. Hagar, who was co-headlining a tour with Roth at the time, likened Diamond Dave to Liberace, called him an "a--hole" and made fun of his receding hairline. "I called him out in front of about 20 people after his famous PAGE SIX harangue," Roth said on Howard Stern's radio show. "He backed down. I guess he didn't want to hurt his strumming hand." Roth, who holds a black belt in karate, explained their backstage blow-ups by saying: "Two big dogs eating out of one big bowl." But he'd tour with Hagar again. "I'd sign up the day after tomorrow. I think the only one who didn't have fun on the tour was Sam."

I heard something like that, because Sammy responded in an interview or something shortly after, saying something along the lines of; he was not willing to fight Dave for whatever reason...

And dave was hitting the weights in those days, and riding his bicycle like a madman, as usual...

It's a true story, it happened backstage after the show in Raleigh, 06 AUG 2002....

Pojo and I were there, three sheets to the wind, and then some....

Not backstage mind you, but there....

Supposedly it got real nasty while both bands were grabbing some chow...

I think that Dave could pound Sammy's ass, simply because the Diamond One is in much better shape.

However, when I interviewed Sam & Mike in 2004 (Dave declined my request) Sammy was saying the exact same stuff to me that he was quoted as saying above.

After the interview I saw Dave walk into his dressing room. Sammy was escorting me out to the stage and also saw him. I jokingly asked him to see if Dave would talk to me. Sammy laughed and said Yeh man - no problem.

The next thing I know, Fat Sam is beating on DLR'S door "Yo Dave - this cat wants to ask you a few questions about our show! C'mon out man - he's cool. He says he interviewed you back in '94!"

Well this goes on for about 5 minutes - and Sammy just keeps on beating on his door harder and harder. I was laughing my ass off, as was Mike Anthony who was with us at the time.

After damn near bruising his hand, Sam gives up - turns to me and says "That's what it's been like the whole tour. He's been avoiding me since the first show". I shrugged it off and thanked him for trying and then headed back to the station.

I don't know if it was a matter of Dave backing down, or just Dave ignoring him. I like to think he had 2 chicks blowing him behind the door and didn't have time for me.

Either way - a funny story that I'll always remember.

For the record ~ Dave's show was much better than Sam's that night.
