im thinking hes just scared and will come out of it, he is a mean SOB, and i cant see him laying down for anyone, hes too self absorbed to commit suicide.

yeah he was my 3rd favorite behind sil and tony, he was a mean SOB too, he would have been good to have on your side when the chips fell.

i would like to see tony and the crew kick some serious ass and come out smelling like roses. sil and pauli running the jersey crew and tony breaking into new york.
hey its happened in real life, wasnt the teflon don from jersey? then went to being the big guy in new york after killing a big boss over there?.

i really want to see silvio get out of the hospital and rejoin tonies crew for the big shootout.

i hope its not a lame ass ending.

    LMAO!

I ain't going to deny, I was a lil disappointed, but not too much cuz it was exactly how I would have done it if I was a show's creator.

At first I thought it sucked, but on reflection it's brilliant. The tension when Tony was waiting in the diner was great, and we're left wondering right until the screen went black if it was Meadow he turned to see come in or another person on a hit-crew coming in. Even if he survivies, there is the pending indictment.

    It was brilliant.

The final episode needing more shootings however.

The whole episode was filled with tension. I loved the cuts to Paulie where it was as if they were foreshadowing to him turning and popping Tony.

I thought it was great. You were on pins and needles the whole episode waiting for someone to shoot at the guy and then that ending. LOL! I love it.

My poor Ma, though. She seriously thought our cable went out.

LOL. Thats exactly what I thought. When the screen went black with one minute left, I just said "you've GOT to be fucking kidding me".

The tension of the last 10 minutes was pretty intense, but the rest of the show was a bit of a snooze...except when Phil got run over by his grand kids...lol

The best episode ever was Pine Barrens. That was some funny shit when they were eating the ketchup packets and Paulie looks completely crazy at Christopher and says "mix it with the relish"....

Paulie and Christopher were always good together on screen. Both characters were excellent.

I was glad Leotardo got popped. Fuck him. Did Sil recover? Was Paulie wearing? Does Tony turn? Get indicted? Retire? Looking back, I'd say it was a fitting ending. More loose ties, leaving you wanting more.

It almost seemed like they were leaving the door open in case they wanted to do something in the future. Also, Tony's choice of song (Don't Stop Believing) in the jukebox at the end made me think that something could be up for down the road.

    That was fucked.

    I'm serious...

How much needs to be read into everything.

Can't they just come out and tell you one thing straight out?

They didn't really answer any questions...

    At least not many.

Unless this actually is leading to a movie or something, I'm not gonna pretend it was great. It was a disappointment.

    wasted episode.

other than phil getting killed, what happened to note that it was a finale to anything? half-season/season/series? nothing. yes, the episode was well shot; i totally agree that the tension build up was really well done. but other than that, it was a waste.

i'm not asking for nice and neat closure. but how about some insight maybe? and i'm not even talking about insight into plot. it could've been an insight into the characters, their motivation, their true loyalties. nothing really changed though.

i mean, yes, maybe it's the first time they showed it, but one HAS to assume that a mob character like tony soprano would ALWAYS be looking over his shoulder; would ALWAYS be excpecting somebody to try something.

just a poor ending. if you ask me (and nobody did!) if they wanted the cliffhanger/unknown ending, it would've been much better to have AJ been the one who got popped with the ecstasy. then have tony offered the choice between families. and hell, end it with a closed judges chamber door where i don't know what he did.

but for a show that's supposed to be so groundbreaking and meaningful, i'm left at the end thinking nothing more than, "eh, soprano life goes on as usual."

    wasted.

Yeah, they tried to get too cute with the ending and they blew it big time. I could have lived without the series ending with a Journey song too. It only makes sense if they are leaving the door open for something down the road.

I was just discussing this with someone and they said when the screen went black...Tony got whacked. They showed Meadow walking in as Tony saw her, and then it went black.

    He's dead.

Someone said (earlier in the season, can't remember what character) "when its your time to go, you never see it coming..."

I am going to watch it again. But, I think they're right.

    What do you think?

Yeah, a friend of mine was telling me the same thing this morning.

    I don't know what to think. I guess it's possible...but I don't know.

Incidentally, Chase said a little while ago that he's still not opposed to a movie in a few years...but I don't see how... Not without Christopher. Or Bobby.

    and definately not without T.

Maybe it will be a prequel, so we can see a teenage Tony driving around in his IROC listening to CVH!

It would be cool to see all the old characters back. Adrianna, Big Pussy, etc.

If this were the case then it would have been better if they showed someone walk up to Tony with a gun pointed at him and then fade to black. It also didn't make sense that there were at least 4 potential hitmen in the restaurant. As it stands, the series ended with Tony eating onion rings and listening to Journey.

Also, I think the point was it turned out to be business as usual.

Tony having dinner with his messed up family while having the same paranoia about everything he always had.

In other words, nothing ever changes.

    That was my take.

To my mind, it worked. But as someone who is telling a story, you could argue Chase copped out. Instead of having to make a final decision and provide a conclusion, he just let the viewer draw his/her own.

I am going to watch it again. But, I think they're right.

    What do you think?
I think Chase left it with so many options that we would be talking like this after it was all done and said. Yes, the diner scene had a lot of symbolism: The boy scout troops and their leader. The couple where I had to do the double take cuz the guy seriously looked like Christopher. All the people Tony was looking at. Meadow fucking up the parking and redoing it.

But really, I think Chase just went the other way. What happens in every mobster story? Either they get popped, go to jail, or become a snitch. In this one, Tony did neither. And we'll be arguing for years what all the symbolism in the diner meant and what the black screen and silent credits meant, unless Chase tells us. We won't stop believin'.

One thing Chase has always surprisingly done is actually reveal lots of the secrets and symbolism behind particular episodes. I'm sure he'll have some sort of explanation down the line...

True, but by doing it this way, we never know who did it. There were 4 potential hitmen that we SAW. Was it someone we saw in the restaurant who came around behind him? Or was it someone we never saw at all? (Like the foreshadowing suggested from weeks prior...you never see it coming)

Were the onion rings poisoned? Did Tony just black out? We'll never know...

The ending leaves us talking about it, and wanting more...which is what a writer wants. No?

I am less disappointed after thinking this through. Its pretty brilliant, IMO.

I am going to watch it again to see if Meadow's expression gives any clue. I can't remember how her face looked when she walked in. She would have seen what was happening. It seemed she was about to say something...but it was so quick...

Good ending im my opinion. So many differant conclusions you can come up with in the final minute or so. Some think he got popped, but i just don't see that. The war between NY had been settled. Tony went to see uncle jun and Sil alone, so no whacking for Tony.

The whole season has been about Tony trying to find himself, finding peace, remember vegas. The playing of journey's don't stop believing was also a good metaphore for tony realizing that even though, the feds were handing out indicments from Carlos being a snitch, Having a son that has major depression, a daughter that changed careers and all the other things that went down with his crew, he was still on top, and had to press on.

The show started with Tony being the family man, and ended that way.

I saw it twice. Meadow never actually made it into the restaurant. She was approaching the door and really didn't have a look on her face like something was wrong inside or that she even saw her family inside.

Us, the viewers. We sit and stare at the tv when the show is on. The show is put on A&E, cut and pasted, and still a large audience tunes in to see it.

    They never showed you.

She was walking toward it and you heard it open, but you never saw who opened it when Tony looked up and it went to black.

Yes, I know. But it was the best time to pull the black screen because it left in an air of suspense. The cut there leaves the moment open for everyone to speculate what exactly happened.

    Very interesting:

A theory proposed by a reader of the NJ.com Sopranos blog using the handle Lorbnash: the nine episodes of this season have represented the nine circles of Hell from Dante's "The Divine Comedy." The fourth circle, for instance, is for the greedy and the miserly; the fourth episode was Tony and Hesh's gambling showdown. The seventh circle is where the suicides go; A.J. took his dip in the family pool in episode seven. The ninth circle is for the traitors, and Butchie implicitly betrayed Phil. (For added fun, reader Joe Adler pointed out the similarities between the Eugene Delacroix painting "The Barque of Dante" and the Annie Leibovitz promotional image on the season five DVD set. Google them both if you want your mind blown.)
