    Roth Army Exclusive

    It is for real.

I recorded it in 1984 from KISW, a Seattle Radio station.

Bo Roberts played this on the 10:00 pm Metalshop Hour.

For those concerned with my lossy file...I will provide a flac file one once I find original recording.

First 10 seconds is a tad distorted because I had recording level set too high...Rest is perfect though.

I think Synth overdubs were done in 1984, when Ed gave this to the studio.

It was Ed remembering that the station didn't pursue litigation after a 1979 radio interview that turned into a typical Van Halen event.

No way that guitar was recorded at the same time the original Eruption was done, if in fact that is EVH. It might have been an alternate version...but this was recorded long after VH1 came out. Too much processed guitar tone for it to be old VH.

    Trust me, it's Ed.

You might be right about when it was recorded.

The file I posted is an edited version without minute introduction from Bo Roberts, the dj.

    He basically said:

" I had a chance to talk to Eddie Van Halen the other day. Unfortunately he did not have any new material he could give us. However, he did give us some studio out-takes. What you are about to hear is one of three versions of Eruption..."

    Something like that.

I have it all on original tape somewhere.

Obviously, Ed either re-recorded it entirely or just overdubbed.

If you listen a few times, I am sure you will realize that it is Ed.

Doesn't sound like Ed to me at all. Maybe the pinch harmonics at the end. The tone is weird too, it's definitely not Ed's early sound.

I think that's why Ed gave it to them though. Listen at least 10 times and then tell me it isn't Ed.

I've also read Ed say he did only two takes of Eruption and they used the one where he even made a mistake in it. The licks he plays in this are nothing like anything he was doing in 1978...nor are they licks that I've ever heard him do, that's why I don't buy it. Some of the runs sound like him, some totally don't.

I don't think it's a take, but rather something he had tried or had once been a part of Eruption.

Ed was close with Bo Roberts and Steve Slaten, two of KISW's DJ's.

    It is legit.

"Studio out-takes" could mean shit Ed recorded in studio.

I think the important point is that while details as to the timing of recording could be mistaken, the fact that Ed talked to this DJ and sent him a tape is not.

Why would Ed give them a tape of a slightly different version of Eruption, when he could show them a different take.

Will you change your mind Brett, if I post this at the Links?

Is this the same Ed that used to say he didn't use any guitar effects whatsoever?

That said I agree with you I doubt it's him. During his many years of drunken shit EVH has been a great rehasher of his previous work and licks. It seems unlikely to me that he would have a bunch of licks that he never subsequently used.

    Cheers!

If it's not Ed then Ed was playing a joke on all of us, because he gave the radio station the clip.

Ed admitedly has stuff that would "clear the room" according to him.

Why wouldn't he want to try something a bit different in this no-risk environment?

He owed the station for the band basically destroying it in 1979.

He kept in touch ever since and gave them this gem.

Gotta agree--to my ears, it's not Eddie! Out of a dozen different bootlegs of hearing him play extended guitar solos unaccompanied, I don't hear a single lick in that posted solo that sounds like Eddie, with the exception of the very last few notes. The rest of the solo is also played metronomically, like a classical piece, not characteristic of EVH at all.

That's what I get for sharing

Have any of you heard Ed's music that he did for his ex-wife's TV movies or Donut City, or the Wild Life?

I have. Not very much like CVH. Listen carefully. It is different but it is Ed.

If it's not Ed, who else could come up with shit like this with the synth overdubs in 1984?

    No one.

No one has heard it before either, I am sure of that.

So...it is an elaborate hoax, complete with unbelievable guitar solo performance, or....It's Ed.

That's right...it's the Holy Grail of Guitar Solos...unreleased EVH, CVH era.

    No one.

No one has heard it before either, I am sure of that.

So...it is the most elaborate hoax ever, complete with unbelievable guitar solo performance, or....It's Ed.

That's right...it's the Holy Grail of Guitar Solos...unreleased EVH, CVH era.

OK OK... I give up It's EVH

I knew you would appreciate Matt.

And to think I've been sitting on this for 22 years without sharing.

    I'm sorry.

Yngwie Malmsteen in 1983. Listen to this intro to "Hot On Your Heels" when he was in Steeler...following the acoustic guitar intro, it goes into electric guitar solo, with Taurus bass (synth) pedals.

BTW, if that clip really is EVH, where are the trademark harmonics and Floyd Rose wang bar antics that he's used in virtually all of his solos?

KISW was the first radio station outside of southern California to play Van Halen, and the band had a great relationship with the on air staff of the time, most of whom are still on the air, but they're all at KZOK now. Except for Bo Roberts. Not sure where he ended up, actually.....

Anyway, it's possible that such a transaction took place, but that doesn't sound like Eddie to me, and it doesn't sound remotely like "Eruption"

It does sound a LITTLE like EVH at times, but it doesn't have many EVH trademarks. I don't think it's him (it COULD be), but I do believe you have posted it this in good faith, and that is cool!

Thanks for posting it, even if it isn't EVH!

I have an idea...for those of you who don't think it's Ed....

We'll just say it is me playing these licks. Sure.

I know this exists no where else so I am safe
