I attended The Darkness show with my 17 year old cousin-in-law Haylee here in Adelaide on Saturday night and they ROCKED! A sold-out crowd of about 4000 South Aussies packed out the Thebarton Theatre (an old-worldy looking joint) and the atmosphere was brilliant.
The Darkness played about a 90 minute set that relied heavily on their first album, but of course, they also played several tracks from their second one. They also covered ACDC's Highway to Hell and Thunderstruck.
Justin Hawkins interacted with the crowd throughout the night, and the whole band really gives you the impression they are having a great time.
During the encore, Justin went to the right hand side of the stage, climbed onto the shoulders of some big bloke, who then preceded to carry the frontman through the crowd while he shredded away on his guitar the whole time. The crowd went nuts!
Overall, I thought the show was right up there with Velvet Revolver's performance at the same venue last year.
I didn't see ONE Van Halen tee shirt all night, but saw heaps of Led Zep, KISS, Motley Crue, Black Sabbath and GnR ones. For about two weeks before the show I tried to find a VH shirt to wear and every retailer I went to said sorry but none of our distributors have the licence for them.
However, during the night there were a few VH moments. After the very forgettable support act vacated the stage, the sound system started blasting out a number of hard rock classics for about 30 minutes to get the crowd in the mood. First up was Panama and just before they hit the stage they played Jump, which resulted in an awesome response from the crowd. The stage lights flashed during the chorus to Jump and the fans really got into it. Justin is also playing a replica of Eddie's late 70s black and white striped Frankenstrat on this tour during some songs. He also played the intro to Jump on a keyboard late in the gig before moving into one of their own numbers.
