I have to agree with ritetoolforjob here. I got that dvd and was really unpleasantly surprised at Dave's performance. Caldreone says it's because he's older but I don't agree. I saw him in New York City in 2003 and that's just two years before and he put on one of the best shows I've seen him put on. Something was up there. Maybe Calderone's point about his knee surgery was the difference but he was just goin' through the motions and went back to singing the songs like a Vegas act again.

I saw him last year, and he was as good as I've ever seen him perform.
He could do the reunion tour...right now! The sisters...they'd be hard pressed for practice time. bassplayer...well, all he has to do is just stand there.

Roth certainly looks better now than he did on the Sam and Dave tour, 'specially in the hair and wardrobe department.
Terms of physicality, Roth was more lively in 2002 re: height and frequency of kicks, drum riser splits, etc. I dunno if at this point each passing year is taking an accelerated toll on him, or the knee surgery is making it harder for him, or what.
Voice...well, even in 2002, the screams were rough...'specially on tunes like RWTD, where there is just no getting around the fact that elongated screams are part of the tune. But in 2002 he was good for short ones (nailed the scream right before the first solo in DOA).
He really didn't do much screaming when I saw him in 2005, but I will say that with each passing year he is SINGING more and more, specifically the verses of the tunes (which, with many CVH concerts, oftentimes went out the window).
He can still work his natural range comfortably, and wouldn't have a problem with the majority of the CVH tunes should the band reunite...but he did seem a little hungrier in 2002...a little more ferocious. Think maybe that had a little to do with co-headlining with Hagar and having something to prove that gave him more of an edge, as opposed to headlining these days with Joe Blow and the Schmoes opening up for you.
He still delivered the goods just fine in 2005, though. I went expecting to leave the show thinking he should maybe pack it in, but two songs into it I realized the crowd was having a great time, Dave seemed pleased to be there entertaining us, the band was shit-hot and tight, and so fucking what if it's not 1984 anymore, you know?
Hard for me to harp on Roth for not doing splits off of a ten-foot high drum riser anymore...fuck, the dude is 50+ years old, you know? He's still making the effort and people are still digging it, so I guess if what he's doing isn't up to one's standards, then one can stay the fuck home! Me, I plan to catch him as long as he keeps on playing.

The knee bone's connected to the voice bone.....Originally posted by Calderone

Seeing Dave live in the last 5 years has been very hit or miss. Too many off nights. When he's on, no one can beat him. But I don't think he puts enough into preparing for tours vocally. He needs longer intervals between shows.
