The Lord works in mysterious ways...But the platform does not define marriage that way, and his remarks prompted the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to return a $5,000 donation from the Democratic National Committee.

Be careful when you define the definition of "moron"...

I thought you didn't agree with that position tho?
Meet us in the future, not the pasture
My position has always been that committed gay couples are entitled under the 14th ammendment to all the same legal rights as a married heterosexual couple. Calling it a "civil union" makes sense, because then the question of "marriage" as a religious ceremony is taken completely off the table.Originally posted by diamondD

The supreme court in Vermont came to the same conclusion that the Massachussettes court did. Dean signed the civil unions bill as a common sense solution to settle the debate.
I hope you're not reducing marriage to a "religious ceremony"...

What does the word "marriage" mean?
Is it a piece of paper, a religious ceremony, or a lifetime committment between two people who love each other.
The piece of paper is legal. So there's no basis other than blatant discrimination to exclude gay couples from that.
Nor can anybody make a rational argument against a gay couple being in a committed relationship, sharing financial resources, property, insurance policies, etc.
Some religious denominations may have objections to performing gay ceremonies. And they should have that right to object, but they should NOT have the right to force that belief into the laws that apply to everyone.
So again, the best thing to do is establish the legal equality, and leave the ceremonial details to for the religious denominations to argue amongst themselves. In the end, some will do the ceremonies and others won't. Chances are the ones that won't don't have a lot of gay members in their congregations anyway.
