    Foo Fighters vs Nirvana

I think the Foo Fighters are better than Nirvana ever was. Was wondering if anyone else felt like this. I liked the album Nevermind. But I also think Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands ever. And Kurt Cobain some kind of hero? I just don't get that.

I'm not to keen on either one, but for every decent Foo song there's 3 better Nirvana tunes.

I'm glad Dave is keeping busy though, he's got a lot of talent and is much more than just a drummer.

Dave is fun and good - real good - but Nirvana changed the music landscape, forever and permanenently.

No offense ot the Foos, but this is like asking who's better, Herman's Hermits or the Beatles. Whether or not you like them, they're still the fucking BEATLES.

I am huge Dave Grohl fan as he grew up local to me.. I have even seen him out on and about here in DC.. One Night at a local club he was coaxed on stage and played the drums on Tom Sawyer being covered by a local band.. It was fucking excellent..

I think Nirvana does take the nod here when compared to the Foo Fighters.. Nirvana was like nothing us when I first heard it.. Dave on drums is tops..

Putting who changed the face of music, who was the most innovative, etc... aside

On a road trip, who's cd's would you rather listen to today?

I know Nirvana was groundbreaking, but I would still rather listen to the Foo Fighters. To me, they have more energy, more fun, and are just more kick ass.

Cobain was the lennon of the group, Died to soon, was a musical genius etc.

Noveslic was the Ringo of the group, And nobody has really heard of him since.

Grohl, was defintly the McCartney of the group, the one that was best able to survive to continue making hits after Nirvana was done. Shit Foo Fighter most of their albums are grate, a lot better than 95% of the stuff out there, Hats of to Grohl to keeping good rock and Roll alive. Probot was a good project as well, Though I wasn't huge on his choice of vocalist except Lemmy, whose song sounded exactly like Motorhead song

Nirvana still is my Fav. though, Foo Fighter is like Wings though, Good, But Not like the old Nirvana, which I fucking love.

No battle from me. I'm ok with Nirvana. Not a huge fan, but have the cd's. I just prefer the Foo Fighters. I think they have more of a rock sound as opposed to the grunge. But Grohl is quite talented. Drums, guitar, singing, songwriting. You gotta give him some credit.

I never looked a Kurt the same after Weird Al redid Smells Like Teen Spirit. :-)

Anyone seen the window display for Cobain at the Hard Rock Casino in Vegas? It looks like Jim Morrisons grave. So many people have slipped notes through the seam of the glass panes. I just never understood the worshipping this guy got.

Cobain was a better singer than Grohl...Grohl is a better drummer than he is a singer...dig his work with QOTSA and Tenacious D.

The thing is..With Nirvana You either get it or you don't.

It's fucking stupid as hell to say something, Like "I'm glad He's gone", or "Poison is more well Known", Thats fucking stupid as hell to say. MTV was at the point in 1991 about to make music more and more commercialized with people like MC hammer, Nelson and such. Trust me MTV had music and teens right where it wanted them to be. Somehow though Nirvana got played and it pushed the pop explosion back a couple of years until lets say about 1997.

We need a new Nirvana because the same thing is happening these days, People need to wake the fuck up.,Sadly though I doubt MTV would even give recognition to such a new band.

He was a cultural icon of the early 90's though, You cannot deny that, Nor hold that against the people. You have to look at it from their perspective he was the big thing of the 90's. For many people he really got them into music.

Hero? No, My Heros are not Rock Stars nither maybe dave, But I have everyday people that are my heroes.

I don't hold it against them. Just never understood it. Everyone has some type of hero. It's just a shame when the kids use 50 Cent or Alan Iverson as their role models & heroes.

There is no doubt, Nirvana did change the direction of music for a brief period of time.

From about 1991 to 1994 yes, then when he died, Grunge sorta died, True Alternative which he helped really get started was popular until about 1996. I love watching all these tools like the guys from creed claiming to be inspired By Kurt, When I know That they are very little like him.

Of course 1996 we all know a Band that could've reunited and retaken the music industry, And would've probably helped block the Pop Explosion, But a Certain Guitar player had to bitch about his hip .

    LOL, I heard about that.

I like one L7 song "Pretend that we're Dead." Noveslic used to wear their shirts all the time on stage.

    I'll agree with that.

I enjoyed Nirvana to an EXTENT - and that's a very important distinction to make.

What they played was not particularly "creative" or "genius", to my mind. Different, sure, but often times I found Nirvana (and Kurt Cobain) to be extremely lazy, sloppy writers.

I can think of 1000 other garage acts that could have been "legendary" and weren't, simply because Nirvana was found first.

Honestly, there were a few things, and I'm not about the deny them their place in music history, but Foo Fighters are a much more balanced, creative, and interesting band to me.

I can't really bother with comparisons, because Cobain and Grohl approach their songwriting differently; I don't even think of Nirvana when I listen to the Foos, despite Dave's presence in both bands.

One thing I remember when Cobain died was various media outlets, almost in unison, called him "the John Lennon of his generation". I'm not sure I agreed with that then, or now, but a learned friend of mine explained to me his theory on how Nirvana and Pearl Jam were like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, although I can't remember if he said Nirvana or Pearl Jam were the Beatles in his scenario - it made sense at the time, but then again we were zooming on coke with liberal dousings of Wild Turkey to take the edge off...

Plus, John Lennon was gunned down by the CIA via Chapman, whereas with Cobain one got the sense that this was one depressed fucker, so Courtney was really just putting him out of his misery when she got Dylan Carson to shoot him.

At any rate, the Colour and The Shape is brilliant.

Besides, for all of their talent, Nirvana asn't even the best band to come out of the era.

This is interesting, I like them both very much, but I think I like the FF better. Makes you wonder if we would have ever heard these songs if Cobain never killed himself - and I'm not suggesting that was a good thing...

Have to agree, I like AIC a lot more, BUT, Nirvana set the stage for a new music revolution, Much like what VH did in the late 70's.

Cobain rules in his own style and he has many copy bands. I see Nirvana as one dudes music (the Bands) and, he, to me, is seen as a sole type of a thing, not a movement, not a trend ,not a musical direction, just a musician and a band .

The Foo Fighters are great also. Grohl is very talented and deserves a voice.

I am enlightened to the fact of his Foo Music is not a repeat of Cobains or Nirvanas...Iv'e had enough gritty grunge..

Forget Nevermind, Bleach was Nirvana's best, heaviest and only good album IMO. Don't care much for Foo.

Bleach, I agree, was the best Nirvana album, period.

    Still like Foo, though.

Agree with Ratt & Poison 100%. Crue beginning with Theater Of Pain. But Shout at The Devil & Too Fast For Love were exceptional albums. I guess they just wanted to be more "chick friendly" after that.

The Foo Fighters are one of the very few bands today still making good original rock music that doesn't have some kind of spin to it. (Brother & sister 2 piece band, supergroup, etc...)

I didn't mean copycat, I'm just saying they opened the door and cleared a lot of the crappy bands (Like Nelson.) away, VH also probably helped out AC/DC, Cheap Trick gain popularity in that era much like Nirvana, and also helped destroy new wave and disco.

I prefer AIC too. They just had an attitude. It was definitely a good Nirvana showed up 'cause the 80's scene had gotten pretty fucking lame. The bad thing was that the copycat grunge bands which showed up in the wake of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and AIC sucked even worse than the 80's bands who copied VH. I mean at least you could laugh at the VH copycats but there was no redeeming value in the grunge copycats. Not even comedic value.

People who don't like Nirvana can't get past the mass appeal at the time.

Nirvana never compromised their art. Just because a bunch of kids were inspired by their message doesn't make it invalid.

AIC, Nirvana, Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden...all wicked bands in any era.

Their music is timeless to me.
