If it wasn't for Gene...Van Halen might not have been as successful as you want to believe. He believed in them after seeing them and wanted to sign them on the spot, instead he had them cut a demo tape and shopped it. Eventually Warner Bros. heard it. Kiss took Van Halen under their wing and gave them an opening spot (discovering young great talent) like they always have done, because they KNOW what its like to be the underdog. Do your homework. Kiss has been very genorous to many bands.
If you don't like Gene, that's fine but as a fan of CVH you have to tip your hat to him.

For some reason I don't see Gene Simmons being able to play Battery on bass. However, I will always be a big fan (I hav e a KISS poster framed in my house).

I will credit Gene Simmons as a major influence on me picking up the bass and learning to play.

I can still name all the KISS members off the top of my head. I read about the EVH/KISS thing in one of my KISS books. I never thought that Lick It Up/Crazy Nights was good enough for Eddie fuckin' Van Halen.
That was virtually ALL Vinnie's work.
Gene was busy with Hollywood and the band was in a disarray.

On Gene's bass playing, I doubt he thinks he's God. Having seen both seasons of "Rock School", he came across as remarkably humble about his musicianship.
However he beleives that Kiss is one of the greatst bands of all time (righly so) and that he has a crucial part in its success.
Gene is an asshole, and he would take pride in been called one...

I read Dave's CFTH and he has a chapter about Gene Simmons discovered them, Gene's ultimate agenda, which was to simply get Ed in KISS. Dave saw this early on after they made the demo in NYC at Gene's request. Gene later invited Ed, Al & Mike to KISS Shows in LA and backstage...no invite was given to Dave.
Dave talked it out with Ed telling him of Gene's agenda and that Ed needed to make a decision because Dave wasn't letting Gene take or proposition Ed into KISS.
Dave to this day is not too fond of Gene...he made a blurb about Gene on his Radio gig...
Dave's Jewish too, but there is a difference between being Jewish and being Israeli. In Israel you learn to be more aggressive because it's survival....Gene has that attitude along with thinking he's the Cat's Meow with women.
Again, Just MY OPINION, but the FACTS regarding DAVE came from his CFTH.
Um, Gene is far more American than Israeli, and I think he made enough money without throwing the five guitarists into the KISS®Coffin™.
And if Gene wanted EVH in KISS®, then why did he tell him to stay put in 1981/82 when Ed approached him about that very subject?

Because Gene could see Ed was not a Kiss guitar player. Gene said he wanted "meat & potatos" from Ed and Ed instead was too fast and technical.
