He may be a mess now, but do you remember when this dude was the King Of Guitar? There may be some kick-ass rock guitarists out there, but there will never be another EVH. He was The Man. May the memory of EVH captured in this video rest in peace.

Remember I had LWAN on vid back then basically for what Eddie was doing (although I will admit I wasn't as anti-Van Hagar back then as I'd later become, mostly because Ed was it far as I was concerned, and at the time I'd have rather seen him continue on with Sambo than not at all), plus live footage of Ed wasn't as easy to come across back then for me, either; didn't know anyone who had the entire US Fest on vid, and at the time it wasn't as easy to get boots as it is now. LWAN was a convenient way to get a close look at his technique, and he did still have the fire in the belly in the early Hagar days.

Wouldn't do much for me to see him doing the same type of solo these days, though.

A pal bought the video when it came out and a crowd of us went to see it. 2 and a half songs in we agreed just to fast forward to this solo spot, watched it twice and then I think the tape was never in his VCR again.

Ed's solo has been pretty much the same.

This one isn't that much different than what he did in '82, '83 and '84.

And then he did basically the same thing ever since.

Had to suffer through a lot of Van Hagar gayness just to get a close-up look at Ed's technique on LWAN.

Never mind the poofy Van Hagar 5150 tunes (although the title track itself was okay), but just watching Sammy up there acting like he had been with the band since day one - and that queer walk they did during the Best Of Both Worlds - ugh.

I watched the whole thing, obviously, and I will say what little Van Hagar stuff they had come up with at that point (the loudest audience response being elicited by ATBL and Panama) came across much better live than it did on their first Van Hagar album (which was a lot of subpar songs that SOUNDED awful on top of BEING awful), but about three seconds into Ed and Sam doing that homo "Rockette high kick" circle jerk that opened There's Only One Way To Rock (naturally, because Hagar only KNOWS one way to rock), between the laughter and raised eyebrows, me and my guitar playing stoner buds knew that Van Halen was all done.

In Scotland we hadn't seen any videos of Eddie playing apart from the song videos. That was of course the time of EEAS and everyone I knew loved it including all the folk that weren't rock music fans.

It's something that folk who were fans of CVH in the US or younger fans looking back don't get. Dave ruled 1986. Yankee Rose was on Moonlighting for fuck sake.

It was all downhill after that.

It really sucks that there was no EEAS European tour...
