    What pedal ?

So, it's time for another European tour. I will only be able to bring a few things.

    1. my clothes
    2. my guitar (Les Paul w/ EMG's)
    3. a couple pedals (probably 2) one of wich is a tuner of course. The second being a boost/distortion for solos.

The question... I have an Ibanez TS9, Boss DS1, Boss GE7, or a Pro Co Rat. Wich one should I take?

    Which one is most versatile?

    I own a TS-9 and love it.

But it you require other types of distortion for different songs, bring the one that captures everything you need.

I had a Rat for awhile when they first came out.

It was too raggly sounding so I traded it for something else.

I still have my old RAT pedal.....I can't part with it...it always comes in handy....
Besides....JEFF BECK uses one....that's enough of an endorsement for me.....

Bring 250 $$ and get an OKKO Diablo.

BTW, playing in or near Cologne, Germany?

        Greetz!

I wish I had some time while in Germany to check out a show, but time is money or something to that effect.

              I'll see you in Koln.

                Buy a POD perhaps ?

The new POD XT's give you a great variety
of distortion and overdrive tones. (Along with
a stack of standard effects thrown in)

BABY PANA 2 IS Coming !! All across the land, let the love and beer flow !
                Love ya Mary Frances!

I'm not really looking for a multi effects unit. Just a little something to push the solos over the top. I wouldn't ever get the use out of a unit like that to justify the price. They are very handy for digital/home recording though. I am pretty sure at this point that I'm gonna bring the Rat.

The thing with the POD, is that they are designed
for both live and studio work. Fully programmeable,
you find the exact tone you want live, program it
in, and you can have it ready whenever you want.

To be honest I never use the standard effects on
the POD (delay chorus etc) just the AMP and CAB
modelling. If you like a really good distortion I
havent heard any pedal that comes close.

I saw the POD's for under $200 in the US on my
last visit.. Good investment I reckon...

Fave distortion stomp boxes (apart from POD)

                    Good old DS-1
                    and the Ibanez Tube Screamer...

The Boss HM-2 is pretty cool too...

So, can I use any old amp set clean and with minimal eq and get good tones ?

I've never tried to use one live before. I used a pod to lay scratch tracks with a drummer the last time I recorded and I have to admit the sound was pretty good, not like my amp miked with the Rode K2 and a 57 good, but good. Some of those tracks even made the final mix. If I could use a pod with any amp I might just be interested.

Yes ! There are settings for using direct to Amp.

I had a jam with my wife last night, she was plugged into
our Yamaha PA (Les Paul) via a POD, JCM800 default setting,
I was playing into a real JCM 800.. (Strat, Hotrails Pickup)

Fucking sounded great ! you could have easily been mistaken
that my wife was plugged directly into a Marshall....

Good stuff, but the drawback I do see for playing live,
is that you would need the pedal-board, which costs
more..... Im assuming you want to be able to switch
to clean tones etc.. With the pedal-board you can
do amazing stuff live... Set it up with all your fave
Amps and Cabs, mic settings on the CABs (SM57
on axis/off axis, condenser mics) even mix and
match cabs (ie: Marshall 4x12 with a Fender head)

You really need to learn the POD, but the good thing
is, once you have, you can save all your settings (easy)
and launch em from that floorboard...

I could easily play live using the POD and the 500 Watt
Mixer/ PA we have... (No AMP at all) and get a pretty
happening sound... (Depending on your monitors)

Sounds like you want a quick solution, so maybe the
Rat is the way to go ??

Yeah, thre real problem is that I don't know what kind of amp I'm gonna be faced with when I get there.

I'm also scared that most clubs monitor systems (if they even have one) are ragged at best. It's a great thought though. I may ask you more questions when I get back.

There's the Digitech line also...but you'd have the same issue live. You have to pony up for the pedal boards for changing your effects on the fly.

I had a bunch of effects at one time but I'm down to a few peddles and a good tube amp now.

I say use whatever peddle you like the sound of. For me I'm using a DOD 250 overdrive because it's nuetral and sounds good with all my guitars and works well with other peddles. I actually use it with a Fuzzface for some balls out of a Strat I have. It tottaly souds like a pegged amp with the speakers breaking up without actually frying the amp to get that sound.

Hey, if I have one or two good distortion and fuzz boxes, a phase 90, and a good wah wah, I'm plenty happy.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!
