I've always liked them but, by thunder, they were bloody good.

Cool! didn't know they were still around. I always did like Mark King's bass sound.
Back when I was learning Bass, my teacher showed me a video of the concert from Wembley Stadium back in the 80's. Mark King and his bass slapping technique is like a jackhammer! His hands are almost a blur. But the thing about Level 42 is the fact that the real band may never regroup again. And I mean Mark King, the Gould Brothers, and Mike Lindup. But that band has gone through many different musicians over the years since the original broke up.
I don't even know who this is...

Stay Frosty, muthas!
Hell yes. His slapping technique is great and made me want to work on mine more. I remember being really surprised and impressed by his live bass abilities judging from the top 40 tunes I had heard at the time.

Having seen the Red Hot Chilli Peppers I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about Flea. Mark King is much, much better. It's not just slapping he's mastered but just about every technique. The encore kicked off with this amazing solo that quite frankly would have left Billy Sheehan short of breath.
They played some stuff off their new Retroglide album and it was bloody good, really rather prog rock.

That's awesome because Mike contributed so much during their time together and he's a really talented musician. Plus, I read that Boon Gould did some stuff on the album as well. I heard the one solo Mark did on a bootleg and he blows away Flea in bass slapping techniques.

Mark King blows Flea away. Not even close.
Phil Gould's drumming was always cool, too. He isn't playing with them again, is he?
Because there's something about you... yeaaaaaah...

Nope. It's a fellow Gary Husband who has been with them for years.Originally posted by Roy Munson

They've gone through a few members over the years. But Phil is a great drummer and he seems quite content with being solo.

A coherent Grimsdale post!
Is this a change for the future?
have been to a club concert of them years ago...it was all spontaniously...was sitting with the bass player of my band at a mcdonalds and he said "level42" is playing tonight and we went...
great concert! and seeing mark king very close and playing like a wizard on his bass was cool...once he was moving backwards, stumbling a bit but not missing a single note...

Yep, L42 rule...
And, men, the first Mark King solo record, Influences... What a masterpiece, really...
Yep, Boon Gould plays a guitar solo on "Ship".Originally posted by RuzDNailz

It's not just the slapping Mark is so very, very good at. It's everything. Phenomenal musician.

Gary was on stunning form when I saw them, a really great all round drummer. Apparently he's more of a jazz drummer but he certainly knows how to rock too.Originally posted by RuzDNailz

Hi , my name's grimsdale and i'm gay !
??
uhuhuh
Well I usually wouldn't have said anything but Level 42 is just crossing a line of public decency.
Jesus suffering fish oil from Magdellan cunt, how can the previously grate Mr Grimsdale derive any pleasure from the half masted twangy bass wankmaster of 80s pop mediocrity.
it's frightening...
One hell of a bassist.
Has said that he didn't start playing till the age of 21! WOW!!!

love or hate the music...mark king is a badass fucker on the bass!!!
The end result is unpleasant to listen to so he is wasting his and everyone elses time.

Me too, now that I've figured out why I had no idea, or more honestly totally forgot who they were...
I vaguely remember hearing the bass during one of their crappy piece of shit videos...
THEY FUCKING SUCK!
So a good bass player joined in, big deal, sounds like uninspired keyboard crap to me...
Funny thing about Mark King? He literally picked up bass playing when he was a music intrument salesman. I was told that he was originally a drummer who wanted to sell drums, but they made him sell basses instead. He picked up the bass and taught himself from the get-go.
He even watched some customers come in and followed their techniques.
Wouldn't it be nice to master an instrument by teaching yourself? You never know your a guitar genius until the moment you hold a Les Paul or Strat in your hands......
He cheats too.
A bass guitar has to be slung low otherwise it looks fucking terrible.
Shit, does that mean if I wear my bass up high like him I can play like that? Cool! Maybe I should hold mine up to my chin.Originally posted by Seshmeister

Tiki has tortured me with this band off and on for years, but I will say Mark King is an awesome bass player.
That said, if Tiki starts holding his bass way up high like that, his groupie will go straight into retirement!

Three words. WE WERE THERE.
i'm so glad you're all converted to level 42 fans
oh blimey!
(cue sid james laugh)
I saw level 42 way back live.
When I was teenager I wanted a JD base and Trace Elliot amp because of Mark King.
He is very nice man.
unspoiled
Mark King also wears that thing around his thumb to help him slap better. I was taught that playing bass up high was the proper way. Having it slung low is basically the rock style and it looks cool. John Entwistle also had his bass up high and he didn't care about looking cool at all. He played the hell out of the bass and stood in one spot.
Both he and Mark are impossible to follow because their hands are a blur!
my hands are a blur sometimes too
usually when i'm looking at a copy of readers wives
ooh no missus no!
