WASHINGTON (AP) - Red Auerbach, who coached the Boston Celtics to nine National Basketball Association championships in the 1950s and 1960s, died Saturday. He was 89.

Auerbach won 938 games with the Celtics and was the winningest coach in NBA history until Lenny Wilkens overtook him in the 1994-95 season. As general manager, the straight-talking Auerbach was also the architect of Celtics teams that won seven more titles in the 1970s and 1980s.
He died of a heart attack, according to an NBA official, who didn't want to be identified.

    Seriously man...

It was almost sad that the Celts sucked so bad for so long after he left the front office...

because we missed out on the stogie one more time...

And Danny Ainge in his place...

    the horror...THE HORROR!!!

I hear that ... when I was a kid ... Yankees ruled, Canadians, Oilers, and Islanders, and the Celts and Lakers, along with the Steelers, Cowboys, and Niners.

The Celts, Canadians, and Yanks are iconic teams as far as championships go.

    Yep...

interesting when you look at those three teams...

and see the Celts, Canadians and Yanks...

    and really...

only the Yanks still close to the pedestal...

    I hate George...and the Yanks...

    but gotta respect that...

and gotta respect what Red did from the start...as a coach...

then putting together the Bird-dynasty years...
