You beat me to the punch DOC!!!

Barberton native Bo Schembechler collapses, dies

The seven-time Big Ten coach of the year had a 194-48-5 record at Michigan from 1969-89. His record in 26 years of coaching was 234-64-8.

DETROIT - Barberton native and former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler died today after he collapsed during the taping of a television show and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

The 77-year-old coaching great became ill at WXYZ-TV in Southfield the day before the Ohio State-Michigan showdown, the station said. Schembechler also was hospitalized Oct. 20 after falling ill at the same studio.

Southfield police spokesman John Harris could not provide specific medical information, but said: "I don't think it was good."

Police were sent to the station about 9:25 a.m. with the city's fire department, and they escorted an ambulance to Providence Hospital, Harris said.

Messages were left with the university, Schembechler's office and the hospital.

Schembechler met with the media this week to discuss Saturday's game between the No. 1 Buckeyes and No. 2 Wolverines. He also talked about the device that was implanted to regulate his heartbeat after he was hospitalized last month. He said the device covered about half his chest, and doctors still were adjusting it.

Schembechler said he did not plan to attend the game in Columbus, Ohio, and he doesn't go to road games anymore.

Schembechler had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl in 1970 and another one in 1987. He has had two quadruple heart bypass operations.

Bo and Woody were just as much part of this rivalry as the teams and games themselevs.

Both great coaches. Being someone who was around back then, to me they both encompassed not only the Big Ten, but college football.

On the eve of the game, unreal.

BO SCHEMBECHLER: OSU'S MOST VALIANT FOE: The band is crushed to learn of the death of Bo Schembechler. We named this band after Coach Schembechler to honor him as the face of Wolverine football. We have never wished ill will upon him in any way and have always wished him the best. When we learned that Bo had seen our web site and was amused by it we were delighted. We were simply delighted. He said to those with him as he read it, "See, I still matter in Columbus!" That may have been the greatest understatement in football history. We believe that he took the band's name as the compliment that it was meant as and that he was flattered by it. We wish to extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to his family. We are truly sorry for their loss.

                  A few "BO"isims.....

"If you think my career has been a failure because I have never won a national title, you have another thing coming," Schembechler said a few weeks before coaching his final game. "I have never played a game for the national title. Our goals always have been to win the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl. If we do that, then we consider it a successful season."

Schembechler's signature moment as athletic director probably came in March 1989, when basketball coach Bill Frieder accepted a job at Arizona State on the eve of the NCAA tournament.

An angry Schembechler declared, "A Michigan man will coach Michigan, not an Arizona State man." He refused to accept Frieder's 21-day notice and named assistant Steve Fisher as interim coach.

Anyone who knows me knows ... my two favorite college teams are Michigan first, and whoever is playing Michigan State second.

So there are an occasion each year where I am a OSU fan, and a Notre Dame fan.

You nailed it Poj ... I couldn't believe it either when I got up today and seen it.

Although I know which side I'm on, here's to an epic battle tomorrow, win or lose.

The Dead Schembechlers, A popular Columbus Punk Band,
who sold-out their concert here in Columbus for tonight.

Have cancelled thier show out of respect.

Also, the Newport Marquee now reads

                        God Bless Bo.

These guys hammered Michigan in thier Show, Songs and Lyrics.

But, this is a CLASS ACT move, on thier part, to cancel the show.

                          Found this at cnn.com...

Schembechler met with the media earlier this week to discuss The Game.

"I'm as excited as you are about this game, because I love to see Ohio State and Michigan come down to the end," Schembechler said. "I see this game as being a great classic and I hope the weather's nice. And I hope the people behave on both sides, because sometimes we get too emotional about this game and we should not do that. And may the best team win."

What a great statement ...never having a losing season is just mindboggling to me

Was an awesome coach...The perfect counterpart to woody during the 10 year war...Really added fuel to the fire of the rivalary....

One last thing though I will be thinking during the game, that I am sure he would appreciate being that this is the biggest rivalry in the world...
