Andre's website is okay, it's just slower than hell. It takes like 120 seconds for each page to come up. You may as well go get a cup of coffee while you're waiting. I cannot handle waiting that long. I'd bet that he has lost over half his forum members because of that. This is 2007 man, people want shit to happen like now, not tomorrow.

Yeah....it is slow as hell. Sometimes I go to post something there and by the time I get to the login screen I give up.

He uses some kind of text-file based forum that he developed himself years ago. It runs slower than hell. There is plenty of great super-fast forum software available out there for as little as $39.95 without ads, but he seems to be happy with the slowness. I realize it would take some database conversion, but nothing more than a few day's worth of running conversion scripts. Oh well, I'm happy here. This forum is high-tech and the VH/DLR news is posted quicker than anywhere else I have found.

Actually, I was not the one who developed web-app, which is the old text based system we were using up until last June 06. We then switched over to Postnuke using phpbb, which is a standard mysql stored opensource forum software. And yes, it was a chore porting all of the data over. The problem now is that we have an older system running which needs to be upgraded (Sun Enterprise E-250, 2 gigs of ram, dual 400 mhz processors... was great at one time). We will be moving the data over to a new distributed system shortly, which should speed things up considerably. The thing that kills us most of the time is all of the search engine spiders. They are not very nice, but if I deny them, then google and other searches won't find the information posted. Just have to wait until we get some new hardware in place. Usually, queries from Germany take between 5-10 seconds for uncached queries. Cached ones retrieve at around 1.5 seconds. Yes, I know it's dog slow. :-(Originally posted by VHrocks
