    Are reunions any good?

All this talk of reunions is bullshit.

It is very rare for a band who reunites to do anything truely creative or capture the kind of popularity they had "back in the day" for longer than the accompanying media hype lasts.

All right, maybe we love that shit for two reasons:

    a) We never got to see the reunited band before they split and get sick of your Dad/older brother talking about how great they were.

    b) The days of world beating superstar bands is over and you are seeing the kind of show that will never be seen again.

It also shows that many artists either find it difficult to get accepted doing something different or have nothing else to offer.

One thing`s for sure, these has beens never go home with empty pockets.

Every time those come back are cash machines, I agree.

But sometimes something really good will come out, as when MADNESS first came back in 1999 with a really excellent record, "Wonderful".
OK, it's basically pop music, but at such a level that it's hard to attack.

I have a J. GEILS BAND boot from Dec. 1999 that's incredible. They came back triumphally too, but with no new album though.

When I think back, Madness seem to be the exception as far as I know.

A live version of one of the new songs they did on their 1999 album (after a 13-year split), with IAN DURY.

Deep Purple's "Perfect Stangers" was masterful, though. One of my fave records ever.

I was almost going to buy tickets to see them but I decided not to as soon as I read and heard about all that.

Certainly it was a cash grab initially, but they look like they're having a great time. The shows sound great and they all seem to be having a great time doing it. Black has expressed a willingness to make some more records as well.

Voted for KISS, but I'd also put Deep Purple in 1984 up there. And I liked what I heard of Sabbath with Ozzy in the late 1990s, too.

For me, to have a really successful reunion, it is pretty much a prerequisite that the band has to get together and create some new music. Not just a couple of tunes for a greatest hits album, either. Am talking a full-length album of new material that at least smacks of effort, regardless of said material actually hitting a home run and being as good as the best of the back catalog.

The band also needs all the members of the definitive lineup present. A lack of new material can be overlooked if everyone turns up.

I just don't involve myself with bands reunions where the band doesn't have all the original members, or members of the definitive lineup AND the faux lineup just goes on the road and plays oldies. Van Halen 2007 is the first time I've even considered it.

I didn`t think that counted as it was a 20 minute one off.

If you count that then you would have to count Live Aid and the like as legit reunions even though they were mostly all done through gritted teeth.

Much like Pink Floyd at Live 8.

Not necessarily. That Pink Floyd reunion blew away any other little reunions that took place before. Even if it was just 20 min. Historically i think that was the one the people were dying to see the most. Even more than the 3 remaining Beatles getting back together for their anthology album awhile back.

Well, I still think it is a very different case from the others.

For a start, it wasn`t the members of Pink Floyd who came up with the idea of reforming. Bob Geldof needed the marquee value of the name Pink Floyd to save Live 8 from being totally unmemorable, which apart from that it was.

Also, David Gilmour was quick to distance himself from a full reunion, even with ridiculous amounts of money being waved at him.

It was spinetinglingly brilliant, I agree.

But...if a 20 minute gig counts as a reformation then yes, The Beatles did reform from the "Anthology" series under that criteria.

    I've got five letters for ya, K y u s s.
Hasn't happened yet, but since everybody else is supposedly reuniting this year, I'm gonna pretend they are too.
Hell, John Garcia has done a few songs with Josh live as of late so it could happen.

    I was torn between...

The Doors (because I only saw them the other week and I'm still on a DOORS high as a result)

Judas Priest (I mean, come on...the metal gods)

Queen + Paul Rodgers (Its well documented that I am a massive Queen fan)

They may only be in it for the money, but it works out well for fans such as myself who never got to see them live.

I'm still waiting for Noddy Holder and Jim Lea to return to Slade, though. I thought they might in light of the delightful new reissues and box set, but I have obviously been misguided.

The Stooges' come back since 2003 has kicked serious ass, hasn't it?
I saw them in August 2005 and, safe the recent stuff they played towards the end, they still really do it IMO.
Iggy Pop still does his crazy stuff with his hip in a real bad state (he walks - and still kind of runs - with his back all twisted)... They started with "Loose" from "Funhouse" (too bad the Asheton Bros won't play "Raw Power" BTW), he sang the first verse, then the chorus, and... jumped in the crowd before the stage, which he did about 20 times during the gig!
Musically, the early tunes were awesome.
Oh, if you go and see them (if they ever tour again, because Iggy's hip is in a really bad state, and surgery could get him paralysed), just don't forget your ear corks. It was by far the loudest concert I've ever been to.
