    Billie Holiday

This woman back in her day had one hell of a set of pipes.

During her career as a singer, there was a particular song that she always closed her shows with. It was called "Strange Fruit". You have to take a listen to it to be blown away. Here are the lyrics to that song:

    Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is the fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

I have an album by Lady Day, her "penultimate actually: "Lady in Satin", and a DVD that retraces her life, with many songs shot live.
Both her unique voice and her very moving face got me by the guts right from the first time I saw/heard her sing in archive video.
She comes very close after Janis Joplin, my fave vocalist ever.

To me Billie Holiday is part of the few artists who were more than human. You can tell from her voice and that look in her eye.

    Cool Billie's Blues

Jeff Buckley did an amazing version of,"Strange Fruit."

"God Bless The Child," is an amazing tune by Billie.

I mirror that Jerome. Every single word you said was very well put.

If you catch during the US Festival during Dave's solo he sings a line from God Bless The Child.
