    Question vinyl vs. CD

So who here still prefers records over CDs? I love going to the record shows and having dealers explain why they think vinyl is better.
This weekend, the dealer told me it was because of fidelity. He said CDs' fidelity is what made them sound "too clean."
It amazes me when I find someone young enough (born in the CD generation) to have a record player, but I guess they've discovered the warmth of the sound. That's why vinyl is not dead.

    Vinyl for me.

Although vinyl isn't really feasible in this day and age, they sound SO much thicker than CDs do...

    I own a Revox B791

    But i don't use it.

No matter how good you treat a record it starts to crackle sometime.

    Can't stand that noise.

Vinyl, it's more of an experience.

Not only does the sound have more warmth to it, the art work is so much better on a LARG scale!

I have a golden oldie...it's an Electrophonic AM/FM turntable & 8 track player. It's in my daughter's room, my parents got it as a wedding present back in 1970.

It's one of those old home cabinet systems, the ones that actually looked like furniture?

    Still works good, amazingly enough.

Let me see if I can get a couple pictures of it...

I didn`t start buying CDs until around 1998.

Before then I always swore by vinyl.

However, if you could get a new release on vinyl by that time, the records were made really shitty as if they didn`t care. Also, bands started to make 60-70 minute albums which didn`t fit on vinyl.

I`ve learned to love CDs since then (I now own 2000) but I still have a soft spot for my massive vinyl collection (even though my wife doesn`t).

I`ll tell you what though, you can beat the old album covers.

Back in the day they were real pieces of art and...it`s hard to roll a joint on a CD case.

Vinyl. I have a ton of it. I loved sitting and just staring at the album covers. Now you just get a tiny boring thing.

The sound is so much warmer. Try listening to old Beatles records on both and you'll see the difference.

Really the only upside of cds to me is the portability...easier to play in the car, etc.

Soundwise, I do notice that albums originally recorded on analog and put on vinyl loose a depth of sound when transferred to cd, and some, like Exile On Main Street, just plain don't sound right.

Scored MINT copies of Women and Children First and Diver Down at the local Sound Exchange for $5 per recently. Hadn't heard either of them in that format in YEARS...and even though I'd been listening to the CDs for quite awhile, so long that I had forgotten how the records sounded in fact, one spin was all it took to realize that this was the way they were MEANT to sound.

Was once told the best American vinyl recordings were the 50's & 60's. After that, the Japanese and Germans had the best vinyl.

Vinyl is the best. Its recorded as a pure analog waveform,
not a dissected, sampled digital binary stream.

Its like comparing solid state amps to tube amps..

The warmth from vinyl is awesome.

Unfortunately (as Wawazat mentioned) eventually you
will wear em out, due to mechanical nature of the
    technology.

Shame they cant combine the durability of CD's with
the analog recording nature of vinyl Records.

Imagine having to change the stylus in your
    CD burner ! lol...

Vinyl by a longshot. For that warm sound all of you speak of and for the total experience like Binnie said. There was nothing like being a kid and cracking open that shrink wrap to find out what the inner sleeve looked like. Plus, it was super cool to find things like posters and little paper pop guns.

I agree with the partisans of vinyl records here. Very well put!
To the warmth of the sound, you can add the EMOTION of holding the sleeve, taking the record out of its soft plastic envelope, the "life" of the object (as compared to the coldness of a CD).
American vinyls, in particular, were made very thick and had the most awesome sound: I especially think of the Stooges' "Funhouse", which was incredible in sound and very thick in addition (often a sign of quality: my vinyl copy of the Scorpions' "Love at First Sting", for instance, which I bought in 1984 and was pretty thin, didn't last 10 years).
On the contrary, my American copy of "Fun House", manufactured in 1970, is still OK - safe for the cracks, but they don't matter to me. I was raised with those noises, I don't mind hearing them at all.

    Vinyl. By far.

Those little pops and dust noises are part of the listening experience.
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

    Right on!

It's exactly what younger generations have been missing. They were given machine-made syrup (from processors, samplers, programs, etc) that deliver soft dung, with no sweat, no soul, no... blisters on the fingers! Those lazy cunts who have been able to sell them all that instant soup have hurt REAL music really bad, in that most youngsters's ears have got used to it, and no matter how you'd try to "re-educate" them, you wouldn't change anything about it.
Blame it on those lazy cunts, labels, the media...

So, if you play an old vintage vinyl to them, let aside the nature of the music itself, they will pull faces because their fucking dumb ears won't hear "clean" sounds. Well...

It's funny, when you think about it... The best music was recorded at a time when recording techniques were supposed to be less good than today, a time when means of rendering music are exploding, but most of the production is just dull.

I'm about to buy a new vinyl record player, because I'm missing some albums in particular. "Van Action", a double album of the '83 US FEST + bonus tracks from the '84 Donington gig, Beck/Bogert/Appice Live, Bill Wyman's "Monkey Grip", Kevin Coyne's "In Living Black and White", Hank William's "On the Air", the Stooges' "Funhouse", the Pretty Thing's "Parachute", the Rolling Stones' "Metamorphosis", and so on, ON THAT PARTICULAR FORMAT.

For anyone who doesn`t know I would recommend any of Kiss Asylum tour bootlegs from `85.

Paul Stanley spends a good five minutes cracking every entendre you could think of about love guns(and a few more that you couldn`t).

I've probably quoted this ten or 15 times, but Neil Young's commentary just nails it.

"Listening to digital music is like looking through a screen door."

This statement carries alot of weight. Why? Because Neil Young used to put monitors on opposing barns, with a lake between 'em. Then, he would take a boat out on the lake to listen to playback of recordings...like determining phase and shit.

I don't have opposing barns with a lake between 'em, so I purhased a 10 Thousand dollar TUBEDAC.

Great thread and I could not agree more about the sound of a record versus a CD. My best memories of discovering music consist of purchasing an Album, being sucked in to the artwork why listening in my own world as a child.

As many of you know I am a music and stereo nut and own an obscene amount of music. I actually got back into the Vinyl scene a couple years back and it was great. I bought a Music Hall turntable with a middle of the road cartidge and phono pre. (about $1500.00) and started spinning records again.

I really takes you back but does require quite the effort. I found myself going back to staple records where you are not skipping through songs like you do on a CD Player with the remote. What a concept LOL.. Although after a while, I stated growing tired of my limited selection of records and found myself reaching for CD's more often and yes, my computer music collection.

So much has changed these days with formats, quality of music etc. Well, I still have my records but the future of music will be on the Computer. I have actually assembed a pretty high end Digital Front end DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) which sounds very Analog like. It doesn't come cheap but it puts the CD closer to sounding like vinyl.

I also run my computer music through it as well. I have posted a picture of my CD-Transport which is a Top Loader with a weight much like a Turntable.. Believe it or not it is Belt-Driven and sounds pretty money. It almost gives you the Turntable experience.. Almost..

Yea, I do miss Vinyl, Brick & Morter Record Stores, and the cool goodies included with an Album..

The biggest disadvantage with vinyl is:

You can't have sex while playing records !!

Who want's to turn those things around after 20 minutes ??

    records now

But hey, the side of an LP is enough for certain people.

I've always loved the sound of vinyl. Like others have said it's much warmer sounding than CDs. I have Sony Turntable (PS-LX250H) my girlfriend bought me a few years ago for my birthday and am really getting into collecting vinyl again. Below is a pic of my turntable as well as the albums I have on vinyl (most of which I already had on CD and yes there's a big difference in sound.) First, the collection:

    And now the turntable.

Edited to say I don't know why the fuck most of the list didn't post properly. Oh well, those who are interested can click the links, I suppose.

Since this will be a new one, please post a pic. I'm curious.
Vinyl all the way. Still love it. Cd's are cool but don't seem to have the bandwidth vinyl possesses.....

    Check this shit out......

I have a McIntosh 240 power amp and a McIntosh pre amp running a pair of 6' electrostatic speakers with a German made turntable. Everything is high end 1960's era equipment.

My dad gave me his vynle collection which is huge and has some really cool stuff in it. He even had high quality pressings of Tskvowski from the USSR.

For dynamics of sound, you just can't beat tube amplification and vynle records becuse of the analog technology does not cut up the sound into bianary code and the tube add depth and natural delay.

The downside is the record degrages in sound over time and sloppy handling damages it.

That being said, I think people would be blown away how good a top notch stereo from 1965 sounds with qualiy records. A modern CD system will sound like shit in comparison.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!
