Best CVH Tour? Share your Story!

My story would be the AUG 1979 vh2 tour, saw them in asbury pk nj, they opened with Light Up The Sky, It was killer. Dave kept telling his stories of Joe. THe whole band rocked, never stopped kicking ass from the opener until they closed with Ain't Taikin Bout Love.

Well, mine is not a CVH gig, per se.....but CVH was played. It was a ROTH Concert for New Years Eve, 2003 at HOB, Sunset Strip, LA --and I've actually told the story before, but in short..........The couple standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me were having sex and she was pleasuring her dude the ENTIRE concert. She showed her fakies to DLR when he first came on stage and he sent her a complimentary hawaiian Lei and a smile. It must have turned her on, because she and her man were total exhibitionists - going to the beat of the music. It was UNBELIEVABLE & HILARIOUS. The Security Personnel couldn't take their eyes off of them. 1/2 the audience was watching DLR; the other half were staring at this couple.

My friend from Mississippi, who witnessed this concert (I had an extra ticket I offered her) asked me afterwards to Never invite her to a DLR Concert again ?!?!?!?!?

It was an unbelievably crazy, amazing, couldn't-believe-what-I-saw-night!

(Can't remember if I ended up having a good year because of this incident - if it was an indication on how my year was suppose to be???)

AMAZING THINGS ONLY HAPPEN AT A ROTH CONCERT !!!!

NOW, as far as CVH is concerned, I blew it. Had a ticket for $11.50 IN THE DAY to see CVH play at the Cow Palace, San Francisco in September, 1983 - I blew off the concert to be with a boyfriend... how dumb was I ?

Ive seen Van Halen with Dave six times, but my favorite had to be the first time, It was 1979, Texas Jam, June 9th, Cotton Bowl, Dallas Texas, the line up was Boston, Heart, Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, Sammy Hagar, and an unknown band called TKO, Van Halen came on stage around 6:00 that evening, and they tore It up! Opened up with Light Up the sky, I was fifteen and I was jumpin up and down goin nuts!! LOL, I was on Michael Anthonys side of the stage, he kept noticing me jumpin and wavin and he busted out laughing, Dave would come over to that side of the stage but he was all over the place really, people were throwing beach balls on stage and Eddie and Dave would throw them back out to us, they played pretty much everything from the first 2 albums, It was unreal!! I will never forget that concert

The convention center right? That's a classic venue. I saw STP there after getting trashed across the street at the hotel. Devastating.

Man it would kick ass to see VH in their prime right on the beach!

Mine was definitely Hershey 98, and anyone who has a problem can go listen to the Westwood One tape and then kiss my ass.

Unchained and Mean Streets in the first two songs is all it took. And I was 12th row. Definitely one of my top 5 shows ever.

whoops, it was CVH stories. sorry

I saw the 1998 show also, and I agree, the band sounded killer, especially Eddie, they just had the wrong singer

1980 Hartford Ct., first show I ever went to, Cats opened up, they sucked. The lights went out Van Halen jumped on stage opened up with Romeo Delight. someone during the show through a joint on stage, Dave said, I got busted in Boston the other night for lighting one up, you mother fuckers going to bail me out of jail if I light it up!, crowd goes nuts he lights it up takes a hit, passes it to Ed he takes a hit. I remember they stoped the show for a few minutes because of all the M-80's blowing up, they come back out on stage, Dave says, you are some crazy mother fuckers man, you got to stop blowing those mother fuckers off. I was 16, never looked back. Last time I saw Dave was 2005 mrytle Beach S.C.. What can I say, April 1st 1985 Mom and Dad split up, I moved in with (Dave) Dad Roth & Roll FOREVER!

    Dude!!!!

I was at the New Haven show August 12, 1979... 4th row on Ed's side. It was the BEST rock concert I ever saw... It was Van Halen in their prime.

Ed played Atomik Punk on the Destroyer. Dave wore the red spandex with the black stripes down the side, massive electric fans on both sides of the stage blowing their rock star hair everywhere.

I remember the story of Joe... he was supposedly Al's best friend remember? And Joe turned out to be a machine gun. Al's drumset caught fire, Ed, Dave, and Mike all played drums with Al during the solo.

Backup band was the Screams... remember them? They sucked. Van Halen came on like a super nova. Ed's playing was stratospheric. He looked like a nice kid with long hair who couldn't stop smiling, played the electric guitar like nothing anyone ever saw before... the harmonic chimes, hammer-ons, volume swells. The whole band was amazing! Dave's perfect banshee screams, the impeccable vocal harmonies and their unbelievable tight playing just captivated everyone. It was fucking incredible.

I was at the 1980 World Invasion tour also, October 10th at the Oakland Colliseum... it was Dave's birthday and he was very drunk, forgetting the words to every song... they rolled a massive cake onto the stage and a chick popped out. I do remember that it was a big disappointment after seeing them in 1979.

In 78 and 79 Van Halen was ALL business about performing their music. In 1980 we got another version of Van Halen; the party-till-you-pass-out-who-gives-a-fuck version.

In 1981 they were back in business again... that tour was almost as good as the 79 tour I saw... almost.

I didn't see the 78 tour, but I remember they toured with Black Sabbath and I remember when the concert took place. The next day at school everyone who went was buzzing about how Van Halen blew Sabbath off the stage... yet most people knew very little about them except for 'You Really got me' and 'Ice Cream man'.

I never saw the Diver Down or 1984 tours. I would venture to say their best tours were

    1. 1979
    2. 1978
    3. 1981

    in that order... IMHO.

    Totally agree.

Saw them twice in '79 and it was mind-numbingly good.

Saw them in '80 and it was a a major disappointment.

Not that it matters, but I thought I remembered "Joe" as being a shotgun. Then again, it's been a while.
