I like the idea of Pete Townsend (personal history aside). He once had a quote along the lines of "Every rock and roll band that comes after Van Halen should pay them a royalty fee."

Pete Townshend Arrested By U.K. Police In Pedophilia Investigation

(1/13/03, 6 p.m. ET) -- Pete Townshend was arrested Monday (January 13) at his London home after British police searched the house in an ongoing pedophilia investigation. The Who leader was taken into custody and was being held at a police station in southwest London on suspicion of possessing and making indecent images of children and of incitement to distribute such images, a Scotland Yard spokesperson told the BBC.

Townshend and his attorney told reporters that they had met with Scotland Yard representatives earlier on Monday, and had invited the police to go through the guitarist's home. Four detectives and a number of uniformed officers, including computer forensics specialists, arrived at the location at 3 p.m. local time with a search warrant and began going through the house while Townshend was being interviewed. A second address, described as a business location, was also searched with a different warrant. Townshend was taken away by police about four-and-a-half hours later.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson was quoted as saying, "(Townshend) has been arrested under the Protection Of Children Act Of 1978 on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children, suspicion of making indecent images of children, and on suspicion of incitement to distribute indecent images of children...A number of items, including computers, have been removed from the residential address for forensic examination."

Townshend has admitted visiting a handful of Internet child-pornography sites and using his credit card to enter one, after two U.K. newspapers said a famous English rock star was under investigation, although he wasn't specifically named. The guitarist, who is married and a father, claims he was doing research for his upcoming autobiography, and that the book will include a claim of sexual abuse between the ages of five and six-and-a-half years old while he lived with his maternal grandmother (the alleged abuse came from a male friend of his grandmother's).

In an interview with the British tabloid The Sun published before he was taken into custody, Townshend said, "Part of my story is about a young man who helps to invent a specially powerful version of the Internet to raise spiritual awareness by using music. At heart I think the Internet is a wonderful thing. But it is allowing child porn to be circulated freely around the world, crossing borders, allowing laws to be ignored, and there are real children behind the images, children like I was."

Townshend continued, "I am not making any excuses. I am angry about child porn on the Internet, and deeply wounded at the inference that I might be a pedophile. I have looked at child porn sites maybe three or four times in all, the front pages and previews. But I have only entered once using a credit card and I have never downloaded. With hindsight it was very foolish, but I felt so angered about what was going on, it blurred my judgment...I have never purchased any forms of child pornography or wished to own any...I was stupid to try to deal with my anger about child porn on the Internet alone. We must try to stop it but if we can't do that we should invest our energy in helping victims of abuse."

The guitarist went on, "I saw the first awful photo by accident. It repelled me and shocked me to my very core. I was not breaking the law at the time. This was in the winter of 1996-1997. It was then illegal to download, which I did not do, not to search and view. I did not think using a credit card was illegal either at the time. As a public figure I would never have given details had I known I would be breaking U.K. law. I need to regain the trust of police and authorities involved in protecting children to continue to use my energies and determination to help what they do...Chasing after people like Gary Glitter (who's been convicted on child porn charges) is important, and it is important that the police are able to convince themselves that--if I did anything illegal--I did it purely for research. I am not a pedophile."

Townshend said he supported Operation Ore, the British investigation into child pornography, and that he never expected to be questioned on the subject: "Foolish of me, but not arrogant. I sincerely believed that the police would know my history as someone who works tirelessly to help the abused, and that since 1978 I have run a charity which has contributed millions to organizations working to prevent violence and abuse."

He went on to say that he's prepared to give up his musical career. "I want to live my life, enjoy my family, and continue with my work," Townshend said. "But if all I can do from now on is fight the sexual abuse of children, and to help those who become victims--well, that wouldn't be too bad a way of living the rest of my life."
