He's pretty amazing. I saw the flecktones once at a jazz festival - wierd, wild, and totally brilliant.

he's gonna be down here in St Pete next month... and of course my parents are in town that night.

I've seen him play a solo where he actually de-tunes his bass and plays it all flappy, then somehow tunes it back up whilst playing a tune. CRAZY.

He will be here in Myrtle Beach February 15 (today) thru 17 for the Annual "Bass at the Beach" Bass Camp. Its a pretty cool thing he has put together with fellow Jazz bassist and Myrtle Beach native Steve Bailey.

    Info:
This program is designed for the Bassist who really wants to “dig in” to the instrument. 10 hours minimum of bass each day includes concerts (by us AND you) , master classes, panel discussions and plenty of "hang time" with us and our colleagues. Master Class topics include...

    1. Right and left hand techniques including open-hammer-pluck, 2+3 finger alternation, extended fingerings.
    2. Improvisation
    3. Groove playing
    4. Rhythm section concepts
    5. Reading proficiency.
    6. Many other techniques that can get you hired (and fired) on virtually any gig.

Total cost for camp, including transportation from the airport to the hotel, lodging, meals, tons of instruction and a lot of wild musical concepts is $1230.00.

Age limit for BATB is 16...... that is, the youngest that can be accepted....BUT if you are under 18 (and are accepted) we must have your legal guardians written permission. We will also make personal contact with your parents just to assure them that you will be well-taken-care-of.

Music reading skills are desired but not necessary. There is a class available night that will help you brush up on your reading.
If a guardian is coming with you there will be a charge of $450.00 to cover their meals and lodging. They will probably be your Roommate, so choose carefully!!! If you want to bring a spouse, that is ok... They will not be able to attend classes, but may attend the evening concerts.

Once you get to the Myrtle Beach Airport you will be picked up by shuttle and delivered to the BATB campus (a 10 minute ride). When camp adjourns Sunday at noon you will be taken back to the Airport.
Camp will begin on Wednesday afternoon with a Concert, Lecture, and Workshop. Each day there will be many more concerts and workshops, as well as "hands on" sessions with the instructors and guest artists.

As a bass player myself, it's cool to have players of this caliber doing this thing practically in my backyard. And Gregg Bissonette is behind the kit during a great many of these seminars.

Shit he is not alone...his entire fucking family are amazing musicians.

Every Wednesday night at a club in Gnashville called 3rd & Lindsley The Wootens hold court. One of his brothers is an astonishing guitarist, another is a kickass keyboardist. And then Victor's brother is also in the Flecktones....his stage name is Futureman.

They all are equally talented, and amazing to watch.

Oh and by the way, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones won a Grammy Sunday night.
