VAN HALEN's 'Best Of' Collection Indefinitely Postponed - Feb. 22, 2007

Rhino Records has indefinitely postponed the release of VAN HALEN's "Best Of (1978-1984)", the first single-disc compilation exclusively spotlighting 1978-1984, the group's original David Lee Roth era. The album, which was originally set to coincide with VAN HALEN's March 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was supposed to contain over an hour of remastered classics from the albums "Van Halen", "Van Halen II", "Women And Children First", "Fair Warning", "Diver Down", and "1984".

The VAN HALEN reunion tour, which would have teamed the band with original frontman David Lee Roth for the first time in 22 years, was also postponed "indefinitely," according to Pollstar.com. Sources confirmed the news on Tuesday (February 20) after a number of radio stations began reporting rumors that the trek was in trouble over contractual issues. One source said that despite an announcement earlier this month by VAN HALEN's management that the tour was officially happening, a deal was reportedly never finalized between the band, Roth and the tour's promoter, Live Nation.

No dates for the tour had ever been revealed, but there were rumors that it would begin in Las Vegas in late April.

VAN HALEN will still be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 12 in New York City.

Van Halen 2007, by my estimation, isn't happening. At this point I'd be surprised if anybody other than Mike and Sam show up to the RNRHOF...

Besides, any accompanying new CVH release for this tour should have been chock full of studio outtakes, alternate versions, previously unreleased live cuts and a 5 hour dvd of live and promo CVH clips. Hey Rikk! I think promoters would love a new studio album. Some kick ass new material for radio, and 2 or 3 videos for the various TV music shows would help generate a lot of interest and ticket sales big time. This is particulary important with Mike out. And younger generation fans want some new stuff to feel like VH belongs to them too. Not just a nostalgia trip us old timers!

Still, this is good news, given that if they put something out, we won't see anything for at least 3-5 years.

So, not releasing this lame effort with no new music or live tracks is relatively good news, all things considered.

I will never understand why of all the bands out there releasing box sets of live and rarities, Van Halen isn't one of them. They must have tons of unreleased and rare tracks that we would love see the light of day and I would be happy just to have that released instead of another rehash 'hits' album that has nothing extra on it. These bastards need to grow the hell up and get this show on the road. Who cares who gets what as long as it is fair for all those involved. Ed should realize from the 2004 debacle that the fans truly want Dave and for that very reason alone, there should not be an issue about the percentages; just friggin get along and go out and give the fans what they deserve- a kick-ass show
