Which of the older, original bands, are still delivering the goods ??
Both Live and Studio ?
I think to qualify, the band should be at least 10 years old......

Does anyone reckon the Stones still have *it* ???
They seem the obvious starting point here....

Rush and Iron Maiden.
Never split and reformed for the money, never tried to recreate the past and never went down the nostalgia route.
And both still release powerful NEW music.

and...sammy hagar!!!
he used to be a ridiculous asshole and became an even bigger one through the years...if this counts as "magic"...
Iron Maiden, no question.
ACDC as far as live goes, but not on record (they are mediocre now IMO)
The Scorpions lost it in the 90's but have recovered it bot live and in the studio in recent years (Unbreakable was a strong record)

The Stooges.
OK, they had a 30-year "break", but hell, how they can still grind it!
If only they hadn't split in the middle of the 70s...
Who would still remember the little punks today?

AC/DC still pound out good stuff and they are untouchable live.
Stones still deliver.
Deep Purple, I find, still has great stuff on album Haven't seen them live.
Motorhead keeps on giving us what they've got.
Alice Cooper comes through.
Dylan is still at it, with a string of strong albums. He's hit and miss live.
Off the top of my head, anyway.

LOL @ Natra & Midget, I threw "Aerosmith" in the mix just to see
what everyone would say... Thats pretty much what I was excpecting..
Man, some of those modern power love ballads were worthy of the
Sammy Hagar Academy of Song Writing... :p

But can we really consider them original ??
I guess if we compare it from "Back in Black"
onwards, its still all good !
Interesting one here..
Motley Crue !
Saw them earlier this year in Sydney
(Red, White and Crue)
and although Ive never been their biggest fan,
they sounded as good as always.
(Some would say, yeah they sound just as
shit as always)
But they still sound just the same live (to me)
as they did in the 80's.
Love em or hate em, they would have to be front runners
here.....
Yep, completely lost it furing the "grunge years", Generation Swine was utter wank.Originally posted by Panamark

However, New Tattoo was a solid record (not great by any means) but the Red White And Crue tour was exceptional, they flattened a lot of "great" bands I have seen live.
They are still what they were about in '81: sex, drugs and rock n roll!
I guess the new album with be the proof of whether they can still cut it or a trading off past glories!
Actually right now one of my friends is in Canada and writing ballads for the new Aerosmith album. Not to say anything bad about his song writing skills but its cheese as fuck, but he’s good at it.Originally posted by Panamark

The Stooges, dammit.
First gig from the reunion tour that's been on since 2003.
Detroit motherfuckin' shambles. Check out Ron Ashton taking off his 1968 raybans, and the big fat nutcase in the end.
Talking about old bands who are still in shape. Ain't that fun?

I have a lot vof respect for Aerosmith. There was conscious decision to move to the more poprock in the late 80's, and they made some good records in that genre (Pump/ Get a Grip). There has never been any pretence that since they cleaned up they have been doing anything but having fun: I can't ever remember them claiming that a new record was gonna be "Rocks", they had consciously changed and I suppose we either had to like it or lump it.....
But they really lost it in the mid - 90's, and "Just Press Play" was an awful record, only one decent song (Beyond Beautiful). Honkin on Bobo was more rockin, but still a little dull, IMO.
On record, therefore they have clearly lost a lot of their magic (although there were some rockin tunes on nine lives).
I haven't seen em live in years (they never tour here) but from what I've heard (their last live CD and DVD's) there's still a lot of magic there, and they could probably wipe the floor with most bands live.
Obviously CD/ DVD isn't the best way to judge that, and I'd like the comments of people who have actually seen them in recent years.
What are people's views on Judas Priest?
Have they recaptured the magic with Halford?
Now, I wasn't all that impressed when I saw them last year but I thought the record was a real return to form (with the exception of Lochness, which was shit).
Any thoughts?
(I suppose if I compare them to Maiden, I can see that they haven't aged as well......)
I love Priest but I can`t help but think the only reason they reformed was for the money and the desire to play bigger halls.Originally posted by binnie

They were starting to slip through the cracks after "Demolition".
If Fight and particularly Priest with Owens had caught on big time then I doubt they would have buried the hatchet.
Halford seemed to do an awful lot of begging circa 2001.
I suppose you could say the same about Maiden although Bruce never said he wanted to go back.
I don't doubt that for a second!Originally posted by Mr Badguy

Agreed.
I also saw Crue earlier this year and they fucking ripped it!
Mick Mars' tone sounded so fucking smooth.

Well, off the top of my head I'm going to add King's X.
Their last effort "Ogre Tones" is on par with "Gretchen..." IMO. Always been a top-notch band both live and in the studio. Highly underrated band also...so much that other bands that have played with them 'admittedly' hate going on after them.

Maiden, of course.
I'll second Tiki on King's X. No band out there is as tight as those guys.
Overkill certainly deserves a mention. While almost every band from their time frame and genre (ie. Metallica, Anthrax) went through a radical change in their sound, they haven't strayed from their formula EVER! And they are still putting out fucking incredible albums!
Fuck Motley Crue. Those guys haven't put out anything relevant since "Shout..."
Blue Öyster Cult!

There are several bands, but I'm quite happy that three of my favorites have not only resisted through the years, they also IMPROVED!
They be:
Helloween
Manowar
Iron Maiden
Not only have these bands continued to deliver solid albums, in Helloween and manowar case, their live acts have improved quite drastically.
Van Halen, on the other hand...
CheerS! :bottle:

Check out "The Panic Chanel" which is essentially Janes Addiction with a new vocalist - very rockin', great record.
Less ethereal than Janes (due to Perry's abscence) but one of the best records released this year!
Hell yeah - no surprises on that one!!Originally posted by MERRYKISSMASS2U

I was actaully expecting more from the re-formation of the original line up, and I actually think "God Hates Us All" was a stronger record over all.
That being said "Chris Illusion" could wipe the floor with most heavy bands in about 20 seconds flat!
Another band: Anthrax!
Saw them this year, kicked fucking ass live!!
I really dug the Bush-era stuff - Sound of the White Noise and We Have Come For You All were really strong and skull crushingly heavy records.
The other two also had their moments.
Anthrax now is just as good as they were in 1987!
Damn I can't come up with anybody...
Aerosmith was hot for a few years when they got back together in the mid 80's. Still good live but all they do is release best of CDs w/ more power ballads- ug.
UFO and Deep Purple had one great reunion record w/ their classic lineup then pffffffffffffffft.
Maybe that's why I was so psyched for CVH reunion.

Prince
David Bowie
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Fishbone
For rock bands that have kept it going on all cylinders without failure. Don't hate them because they're 10 years ahead of the game.
As far as Heavy goes...
I gotta give King's X props...Living Colour they're not.
Preist lost me and then brought me back with "Angel of Retribution".
Perhaps there's still hope for RATM and Soundgarden????

Dream Theater!!! 20 years and still kicking ass. They put on an incredible show that you can see multiple times without hearing the same songs and they try to top their previous efforts every time they go into the studio.

ZZ Top.
I also agree with AC/DC & Iron Maiden. All three of these bands, While I'm sure they love $$$ as much as the next guy, don't seem to be doing it just for the ducats.
