Check out this video of Eddie Van Halen playing the Beat It guitar solo (arguably the greatest guitar solo ever) live with Michael Jackson in the mid 1980s.
The video is hilarious. He COMPLETELY butchers his solo. It is a complete disaster and embarassment. It is obvious that he is totally trashed. If he has been this way for 25+ years rehab may not do the trick.

He didn't butcher it - just didn't know when to come in, and did a decent job of improvising despite the lapse.
How can a guitar solo in one of the lamest bullshit pop songs of all time be even thought of as resembling "great"???
I think I remember reading he did the original solo in one or two takes. He probably didn't remember it or he was just improving and jamming with the band here.
