Yankee Rose on the radio. Hated Steve Vai's tone from moment one and my opinion of him has never really increased.

On a personal note, I remember thinking to myself, "Van Halen was better" and wished that they'd get back together. Liked it alright on it's own terms, though.

Here it is 21 years down the road and I'm STILL wishing Van Halen would get back together...

I didn't get it until a few years later. Yankee Rose blew the speakers off but it was Ladies Night in Buffalo that did it for me. Inch perfect guitar solo from Vai and one of Dave's best tunes ever.

I thought the singing was good but that it was trying to sound too much like Van Halen...

I remember telling my friends it would sound better with Eddie Van Halen playing on it...

I liked it though, still do...

I remember thinking after hearing ALAE that I wished Dave would have found Jason in '86 instead...

Sucked, like everything else, that VH and Dave have done, since they parted ways.

I wouldn't go that far. Steve Vai's a worthless guitarist, yeah, but the songs themselves are good. I understand being a Van Halen traditionalist (and I am too, I'll never be caught dead saying anything Dave's done solo trumps his Van Halen material), but to say it "sucks" is taking it a bit to the extreme...

Let down, looking for a more full sound(brownsound?) It was lacking something - Ed, Al & Mike, However, more balls than 5150!

5150 had already been out, so when I heard EEAS, I thought Oh... So, this is where Van Halen went.

As has been said, Vai's tone wasn't quite right, but his energy and enthusiasm matched DLR '86 far better than EVH '86 would have.

Got your Dreams right nere, pal!

While still a few steps below anything by CVH, it's been one of my fave albums since day one. I still play it out, to this day......the buzz was positive, everyone I knew that was a VH fan dug it.....

A good album...but more so I remember it being on at all parties when it came out. It was drinkin and gettin laid music much in the tradition of CVH. Where as 5150 was a magnet for geeks who could care less about CVH.

It was so... different, but I liked it. Steve's solo in "Ladies Night in Buffalo" was better than any solo Eddie had ever played. And Billy ate Mike and smiled But I missed the riffs.

Bought it the day it came out. The cassette was in a long cardboard box almost like a cd box. First time i listened to it i was kind of disappointed but it grew on me fast. It just wasn't Van Halen. However, by the time i saw him on tour it was one of my favorites and still is. Like the post earlier, if you went somewhere to party - that was what was playing - not 5150. No one wanted to drink and smoke listening to How Do I Know When Its Love or Dreams. Maybe Hot Summer Nights. Everyone knew DLR was where the party was at.

First time I heard any of it was the Yankee Rose single via watching the video. Went out and got the album, and was fucking blown away by Shyboy. Had heard a bit of Vai prior, but had never heard Billy Sheehan before. Had read about him, but hearing the dude just fuckin' wail like that was a mind-blower, more so than anything Vai was doing...thought Vai's tone was annoying back then, and still think so today. Dug his solos on Ladie's Night In Buffalo, Goin' Crazy and Tobacco Road, but the rest of them just struck me as a bunch of wheedley-wheedley-wee wanking. Sheehan was wanking a bit as well, but then I'd never really heard that type of stuff done on bass before.

After the utter letdown of 5150, though, Eat 'Em And Smile was just what the doctor ordered.

Big Trouble is one of Dave's all time best songs, vocally. You can just imagine the JD soaking the mic protector as he's singing it in the studio...

    Instant classic!

I was 10 when it came out, man..the memories!

I played "Going Crazy" so many times that summer, I think I wore my tape out.

Can we re-wind time to go back, please?

This is why Vai's audience is full of musicians, it doesn't appeal to anyone else. I would like to hear Eddy play ANYTHING off of Fire Garden. He gets a pass because he is Rock Royalty and was part of the greatest band in the history of rock. Now if he could...just....get....his....act...together. There is always hope I guess.

The albums with Vai just sound...thin, for lack of a better word. I mean, songwise they're good, but Steve's playing is unengaging...I'm not a big fan of Billy Sheehan, either...

I honestly feel Dave's solo high point was ALAE; songs were (mostly) great, Jason Becker was fucking beautiful on that album, and it FINALLY sounded like it should - more Van Halen than Van Halen was at that point.

Dave and Jason got far too little time together...

Album should have been huge...could have done better had Warner Bros. actually believed in it.

    Nah, I disagree...

ALAE is an attempt at Commercial Rock...

Aside from It's Showtime and Sensible Shoes, it pretty much sucks...

And Vai is more than a just tad more interesting than Becker...

To put this in perspective, I rate Dave's albums in the following order:

    EEAS

    DLR Band

    Skyscraper

    Crazy From The Heat

    Your Filthy Little Mouth

    ALAE

    Diamond Dave

Well, at least you were friendly about taking a different point of view - there may be hope for you yet...

I remember thinking it was the greatest thing ever..I became a Steve Vai nut and felt Dave couldnt have picked a better band..the tour was amazing as well..

I remember seeing Vai in Crossroads and practically foaming at the mouth knowing that Dave just tapped this guy for his band! In ninth grade it didn't get any cooler for me!

I didn't miss VH one bit when that album came out....

the 5150 album was so dull in comparison it wasn't even funny..

What pissed me off is Dave killed that band's momentum by hiring Brett Tuggle ( forcing Sheehan to quit) and putting out the lackluster Sky Scraper....

Dave knew the blueprint , did it with eat em and smile, and then ruined it....Dave's biggest career blunder ever in my opinion..

a followup to EEAS produced by Ted Templeman featuring alot more BIG ROCK would'v kept dave rolling alot better...especially since Van Hagar was losing steam with the diehard fans around OU812

Big trouble is my favorite song. I of course bought 5150 and I liked Summer nights. The rest blew. EEAS though was awesome! Every track different and man the energy was through the roof. Strange, I didnt like Yankee rose much. I didnt like the guitars and thought Dave squealed too much. Still the only other Solo album that came close was the DLR band. I did like ALAE, I thought, wow thats what VH would sound like if they got back together.
