Deep Purple to play all of "Machine Head" on UK Tour

Deep Purple have announced they will play the whole of their classic Machine Head album on their upcoming British tour, commemorating the 35th anniversary of this landmark release.

Machine Head was released in April 1972 – the year of Watergate, Red Rum winning the National, Warhol creating his Mao image, the release of the first video game from Atari and the birth of one Marshall Mathers – but real rock fans remember it for Purple’s epoch-defining album.

Boasting stone-cold Purple classics, Machine Head opens with the blistering Highway Star. Maybe I’m A Leo, Pictures Of Home and Never Before follow hot on its heels. The most famous riff in rock opens the fifth track Smoke On The Water before the signature keyboards kick off the punultimate cut, Lazy. The raucous rock romp that is Space Truckin’ closes the set in fine style.

Purple’s April tour offers the chance to see one of the world’s finest acts playing their magnum opus – and a whole host of other classic songs – and also boasts Thin Lizzy and Styx on the same bill.

This actaully sounds like a great idea, even though I've never been a huge Purple enthusiast - they just don't excite me as much as a lot of other similar bands.

If there weren't so many great tours this year, I would probably go.

"Machine Head" is by far my fav Purple album..

Hahahahaaaa...Maiden did it. Priest is going to with their new album. I think it's a fookin' ace idea. There's some awesome company on that bandwagon!

OK...but don't they basically do it anyway?

Highway Star, Pictures of Home, Lazy, Space Truckin', Smoke on the Water...don't they usually hit all of those live, or am I mistaken?

That's only like 2 additional songs...

True that, but I suppose the experience of them playing all of those songs back to back in order adds a little additional magic to the show.

I`m pretty sure they did that the last time they toured the UK or the time before.

I would be more interested if they played the whole of "In rock", which is a better release in my opinion.

"Machine head" has some killer stuff but I`ve never been too hot on "Pictures of home", "Never before" or "Maybe I`m a Leo".

"In rock" is kick arse from start to finish.

They performed the entire Machine Head album a few years ago when they rolled through Toronto a few years ago. Cut for cut .It was killer.

Gotta agree with Badguy. "In Rock" smokes front to back. I'd love to see that one performed live.....

What's the point of playing the entire album when it's not the band who recorded the fucking album?

Well, the shows aren't sold oot (despite Styx and Thin Lizzy on the bill), so it's probably to get a few more people in.

I remember reading aboot them doing it in America, but dunno if they did it over here (never actually seen DP before).

I agree with you on "In Rock". "Machine Head" is only seen as their claasic album because it's got "Smoke on the Water" on it IMO.

But, still, should be jolly good fun.

Between Fake Purple, Fake Styx, and Fake Lizzy, there should be just enough original band members for ONE band.

                              HA!

Fair dos, that was a good point.

But, they're still good live (now that Gillan's voice has improved).

Besides, there's been so many different DP line ups that I don't think it matters anymore.
