    Favourite Van Halen riffs

I've heard enough about Ed's lead playing here, what makes him just as unique is his rythym and that's just about 80% of what he plays anyway. The main riff is what gives the song its real character.

Here are my top 10 favourite VH main riffs:

    Atomic Punk

    Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love

    Light up the Sky

    Romeo Delight

    Mean Street

    Unchained

    Hang 'em High

    Little Guitars

    Panama

    Drop Dead Legs

    Well how about you?

"Fools" is an old fave. That's one heavy freakin' riff.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Loss of Control. Great intro and shift of tempo from slow to very fast.

Without a doubt, Ed's always been known for leads, yet underrated for rhythm. Great thread!

    My pics are:

    Little Dreamer

    and

    Dirty Movies

Best album for rhythm? "Fair Warning" hands down!
I like to pay close attention to the things I'll forget later...

Loss of Control has always just made me laugh. It's so fucking aggressive. However, I've wanted to add it to an VH obscurities CD I'm making, and it's hard to seperate it from "Tora Tora"......

    Any suggestions?

Why would you want to seperate it, these two go together perfectly.

dirty movies!!! pan your stereo to the left to hear the rhythm guitar...at about :45 ed comes in and at 1:02 or so ed does the coolest little funky dead pick scrape thing...does it during the chorus too, but the first one is the best.

light up the sky...riff is killer...during the verses ed plays the riff, but listen to it when the second part of the verse comes in...he delays a split second then hits a higher chord and makes a riff out of it...until an almost tropical riff during the breakdown!

top jimmy...amazing guitar in the verses-jangly and slippery. then the solo-a sinister rhythm guitar breakdown that holds up one of his most incredible solos.

good enough for now. oops! i promised to never use a spammy song title in my daily travels! now i gotta kill him or myself!

    The preceding is Sacralidge.

I believe this event has torn a rift in the time space continuum and caused the disappearance of Mike Anthony.
    Welcome aboard Wolfgang.

However, Mean Streets contains the Holy Kimchee of EVH riffs!

...just about every tune in the 6 pack has some kind of cool main riff...that was Ed's trademark...

maybe I'll try to pick the best riff... main or otherwise (if you will ) off of each album...??

VH - Jamies Cryin - I like the way he does that "wah wah" right after Dave sings "woah woah woah Jamies Cryin"

    VHII - You're No Good - I like the way his guitar immates Dave's scream...or is it vice versa?...either way...sounds fuckin bad-ass!

WACF - Everybody Wants Some - I love his solo on this tune and how it changes up the entire song for bit

DD - Little Guitars - I like the picking sound.

FW - Unchained - The riff in the beginning of that song rocks...I like the way Ed hits the ground running...

    1984 - Panama-ha - I don't know why I like it...I just do.

see, I was very tired last night when I posted that and I forgot all about the little "eecchh". I love that! Sometimes I just make that noise for fun to see if anyone notices.
