That is my point exactly. I think we can all agree that at the very minimum Alvarez won the last round. So i would wonder what Dan Raefel saw in the last round? Regardless, the fight was won by Mayweather but it always interests me when there seems to be a wide variance of opinion on the scoring. It is all in the eye of the beholder. One thing that strikes me about this fight and all of Floyd's previous fights is that i don't recall anyone ever coming into the ring in as good of shape as Mayweather. The trend is for everyone to tire out toward the end of the fight except for him. A lot of deserved credit is given to Floyd for his hand speed but i don't think people talk enough about his conditioning. The guy has never had an off night or sub par training camp that has shown itself in the ring that i can think of.

I gotta say that I didn't give him a clear round , and the last one I was to busy expecting him to come out at least try blasting mayweather out of there . He knew it was all over points wise .

I would make a terrible referee , I find it difficult not to score emotively .

I used to be that way back in the 80's when i was young. I probably thought Duran, Leonard and Hearns never lost a round unless they were fighting each other and got knocked down or out. Then again, it is funny how you can go back and watch a fight later and score it differently than you did the first go round. I think i watched Hearns - Leonard II on three different occasions and scored it 3 different ways, only one of which was the draw that the judges saw. You pick up on something different each time. I really want to watch this fight again this weekend and try to rescore it. It would be funny if i saw 12 to none Mayweather this time.

I'd give Canelo the 12th if only because it was the one round Floyd seemed to take off. But Alvarez knew he needed a knockout, and it didn't even look like he tried....

Interesting that the fights you mention are both heavyweight bouts - it is undoubtedly the weakest division in boxing right now, and has always been the one which brings in the casual fan, so to speak.

In the lower divisions, boxing is thriving.

David Haye has pulled out of the fight with Tyson Fury with yet another injury sustained in training. How many times is that guy gonna use an injury for an excuse. Remember the sore toe against Klitschko, and the hand injury before his last fight?? Guy's all mouth and no trousers.

It's a bad cut but am not sure it needed to stop the fight , it's not as if fury would hit him.
Now if fury had a cut I would worry ,he could upper cut himself again and open it :

A cut that requires six stiches should certainly postpone a fight. I imagine that Haye is gutted about this, as it would have been a big payday.

Hopefully they'll still get it on early next year.

What fights with the sound off - the commentators can easily lead you one way.....

I think that there is a problem with scoring when it comes to aggression - Pushing the fight and throwing punches is one thing, but for those punches to count they actually have to land (on the head and torso, not the arms) so work-rate doesn't really do a lot for me if the guy is missing, like Alvarez was most of the time.

OK, let's do some more fantasy ATG heavyweight match-ups. As always, assume that each fighter is in their prime:

    Evander Holyfield - Joe Frazier

    George Foreman - Larry Holmes

    Floyd Patterson - Ken Norton

Riddick Bowe (the man with the briefest 'prime' in history) - Lennox Lewis

    binnie - Robert Mugabe (a light-heavyweight spectacular!)

I reckon I could take him

On another note, one of my former victims - Tyson Fury - will be fighting David Haye in a resceduled fight on February 8th 2014.

Lets hope Mr Hayemaker himself doesn't break a nail or get an eyelash in his eye or something or the fight will be off again.

That's a bit harsh, dude. A cut that size is a fair reason to stop the fight.

Haye is a lot of things - brash, arrogant, vain, and a relentless self-publicist - but he's no coward. Stepping up to heavyweight and getting the fights he's got has been impressive for a guy who is naturally much smaller than those he fights.

David Haye was a shot in the arm for a very dull division. I admire the fact that he stepped up to heavyweight to fight bigger guys for World Titles. I was rooting for him in the fight against Klitschko. But ever since that fight he has been a whiny bitch. He got beat by Klitch coz he had a sore toe(damaged in training) he said. He retired like he said he would on his 30th Birthday stating he had fulfilled his dream of being Heavyweight Champion of the World, didn't need the money and had always said he would retire at 30. Then what happened? He got involved in one the ugliest brawls ever witnessed against Chisora at that press conf and low and behold came out of retirement to fight. My point made above is that he has pulled out of more fights with "training injuries" that any other fighter i know of. Remember the sore back that lead to him pulling out of his first arranged fight with Wlad before he actually won the WBA Heavyweight title? Then the sore toe, then the broken hand before his last fight, then the cut. I just wish he would stop the excuses and just fight. The cut was a bad one, but he sustained it a week before a big fight in a heavy sparring session?? WTF is he doing heavy sparring a week before a fight, surely sparring should be light at best and not taking full on blows to his head a week before a fight or am i just naive? And now i need to wait until Feb before he kicks the Shit out of Tyson Fury. If Tyson doesn't kick the shit out of himself that is hahaha

He certainly came off as a sore loser against Wlad - I think that was partly just disbelief at how easily he was beaten. I think the injuries are genuine, in most cases - the toe was certainly broken (but he should have shut the fuck up about it); that cut is serious enough to delay the fight (and agree that he should have been wearing head gear a week out from the fight if he was still sparring - especially the killers he had in his camp). The back injury is more suspect - I suspect that was faked to delay the fight because Satander - the Sports channel he was signed too - went bust just before the Wlad fight was supposed to happen.

So, Cotto is back in the ring (this Saturday, I believe) against Rodriguez.

Cotto's first fight with Freddie Roach.

    Thoughts?

Khan's speed may give Floyd trouble early on, but I don't see Khan lasting more than a few rounds once Floyd figures him out and cracks him in that glass jaw a time or two.

I used to think this. But I genuinely think that Khan won't be able to get close enough to Floyd to use his handspeed - it would be a complete mismatch, and if it went 12 rounds it would only be because Floyd wanted it too.

I'd be amazed if they do it in Vegas - I suspect that Floyd wants to do a UK fight (because the ticket sales would be huge).

Me too. Froch always gives value for money.

Apparently Froch used Groves in sparring for his preparations for the last Kessler fight, and Groves beat the shit out of him. Now sparring ain't fighting, but I do think that Groves might be all wrong for flat-foot Froch.

True. The question is what does Cotto have left?

Enough to entertain, not enough to actually matter, that is my guess.

All Khan is is next, the better question is who steps up after that?

Team Mayweather have refuted claims that Khan is next.

I suspect that Garcia might get the nod (makes sense for 5/5). If Bradley beats JMM, it might be him. That's a big 'if' though.....

In other news, Wladimir Klitschko takes on Povetkin tomorrow.

This is the second biggest guarenteed purse in heavyweight history (the 1st been Holyfield-Buster Douglas, since you asked). And I could give a shit less.

It's been a hyped fight for years, but I don't think that Povetkin has done much noteworthy as a pro - Klitschko will win on points is my guess.

That and IIRC he's never done a UK fight before.

You stayed awake until the 7th?

Three knockdowns in a round is good, but in truth two of them were throw-downs - the refs are so, so generous in giving Wladimir leeway. He was holding all night, leaning and then uppercutting, and only had one point taken away. The reason it frustrates me so much is because he doesn't need to do that shit to win...........

Cotto looked like a monster last night - Roach has injected some fire back in him. Not sure he can handle the very best at 154 (he's just not big enough), but it'll be great to find out
