Leonard is an ATG, no question. Probably an all time P4P Top 10.

He fought a smart fight with Hagler, and I give him major props for it. We have to remember that he was a natural welterwwight, fighting a natural middleweight - that it was competitive is impressive, that it was close is utterly remarkable.

Hearns was fun to watch, but had somewhat of a glass jaw.

I don't know about 'glass', but his durability was certainly far behind his power. Of the 'Fab Four', I have him at the bottom in terms of ATG status.

A 6' welterweight with hands that fast and power that severe would have been there or thereabouts in any era.

I have Hearns right there at the second position. Hagler was great but he didn't go up the weight classes like Leonard, Duran and Hearns did. He stayed at his comfortable weight instead of going up and seeking more belts. Because of that, his 3 most memorable fights were against Leonard, Duran and Hearns when they got to his weight. Had those fighters done what Hagler did they never would have fought. Thus i have to put Haglar at 4 even though he was the best of those 4 at that particular weight. Because Duran lost to all of these fighters except Leonard once i have to put Duran at number 3. Hearns would have to be number 2 and Leonard would have to be numero uno.

I am pretty surprised that Leonard isn't as popular as I thought he was .
I thought he was universally excepted as an all time great .

No, brother. Never laced em up.

I haven't hit anyone since 2001. And I don't plan on doing it ever again. I'm too old to trust that my instincts can hang with my mouth.

I just don't understand why people are throwing Ray facts at me.

I love pugilism. And I know what Sugar has done, and it's brilliant.

He fought the best. No question.

That dude could walk into ANY public venue,TODAY, and whip anybody's ass.

He's just such a bitch. He needs everyone to love him, and it's ridiculous. Daddy issues?

Just because guys don't take as much time between bouts then as they do now doesn't mean a thing. It is what it is.

    Fighters fight.

Ray, by pretending he's the consummate warrior, looks like a whore by retiring every time he gets rocked. It just looks stupid.

    IMO

The Hitman is my favorite fighter of all time.

With no disrespect to Joe Louis, whom I regard as the best ever.

I watched that fight at a local theater back when they did the closed circuit deal. Me, a friend from school, and another friend of the family. We may have been the only three people in that theater rooting for Hagler....and probably three of maybe twenty white guys. Great enthusiastic crowd that night. The decision gets announced and we quietly got outta there.

I miss the big fights on Monday nights, but we had some great parties for the big Saturday night shows too. Last weekend my friend and I watched the Tyson/Douglas episode of Legendary Nights. We watched the fight live at the old house a few blocks away back in the day. I have the HBO interview that Douglas and Tyson did a week or so later somewhere, I'll have to dig it up. Holyfield/Douglas was back at the bar on a Monday night.

Agree 100%, Leonard is an ATG no doubt but his act wore very thin with me. My fave Leonard memory is the beating Terry Norris put on him.

Loved the Hitman, never seemed to be a dull moment in any of his fights and that alone makes him an ATG. I do agree his jaw let him down but hard to fault the man considering how entertaining he was.

I actually have Hearns at no. 4 on the Fab Four list, which looks like this:

    1) Duran - yeah, he losts to the other 3 but in a P4P sense he is surperior. A natural littleweight should not beat an ATG welterweight or middleweight. That Duran made the fights so competitive is remarkable. He is also - no arguements please - the best 135lbs fight ever. And when you look at who he beat outside of the Fab Four, it's remarkable.

    2) Leonard - remarkable in every way.

    3) Hagler - if you were to say he was the greatest middleweight ever, I'd struggle to disagree. Until I remembered Carlos Monzon.

    4) Hearns - power a-plenty, and a great fight. But I see a few too many weakness to match the other 4 in a P4P sense.

    I love this thread, too

Louis is an ATG heavyweight, no doubt. And the WAY he fought changed the division (combination punching in particular). I'm not keen on comparing eras with heavyweights, because they've become progressively bigger as time goes on. In a skills sense, Louis is a match for anyone in any era. But I don't know if the great heavies of the past who we all love would be as competitive in the eras from the late '80s onwards - Vitali Klitchscko is 6'7'' and 250lbs with a granite jaw. For Louis to get close enough to him to land punches would be remarkable - how he takes punches from a man 50lbs heavier than him, God only knows.

Personally, I think that if there was some mythical heavyweight contest Larry Holmes would come out on top - big enough to handle the 'super' heavies of the '90s onwards, and skilled enough to whoop anyone before that. But it's all subjective - size matters in boxing, and the heavies of the post Lennox Lewis era are so different from the pre-Tyson one.

BHOP won again last night in an entertaining fight. He was getting hit more than usual, but he clearly wanted to mix it up a little......

If my memory serves me correct they filmed him asking the questions and then filmed him giving the answers, then spliced it together as if there were 2 Sugar Ray Leonards there.

I don't have a problem with your thinking here. That is what makes these fighters so great. What i didn't think about with Duran is how Iran Barkely seemed to have Hearns' number yet Duran was able to beat him.

A lot of power. No one has really clocked him yet other than Lehovic so i'm not sure about his chin. Hopefully they will step up and let him fight a real contender the next time out. See next post.

Anyone that didn't see this fight Saturday night on the undercard of the Triple G fight needs to watch.Abdusalamov vs. Perez was what a heavyweight fight should be - a lot of action and throwing in combination. I'm not sure if Deontay Wilder could beat either of these guys. Hate to hear that Abdusalamov is in a coma at this point. Here is the story on his condition as of the morning.

Wilder is explosive, no doubt. I also like the fact that he's not a fat fuck - rare for a heavyweight these days. Agree that no-one has chinned him yet, and that we need to see better competition. I'd keep him miles away from Chris Arreola (fast hands + untested chin = sleepy time), but there's plenty of others who could test him.

He needs to use his jab more, and his balance is shocking. Solving those basics is essential to his development.

If anyone gets the chance to watch Nonito Donaire-Vic Darchinian this weekend, do: it should be a cracker.

Even though he's coming off a loss, I suspect Donaire has too much in every department for Vic.

Epic finish from Donaire, but he looked a much poorer version of his former self tonight. He's gotten old quickly.........

I was somewhat surprised at the scorecards at the time of the KO. Two of the judges had it Darchinian's way by more than 2 points. Basically had Vic just lost the last 2 rounds 10-9 he would have won the fight.

Vic was certainly winning - Donaire looked gunshy and hesitant for some reason - but I think the judges were a little out.....

Degale has everything except the focus. And that frustrates the shit out of me.

I expect that they'll be aiming to get him a title fight with Sakio Bika (WBC). He's certainly the most beatable of the current 168 champs, but he's still a hard, hard night work for Degale.

In other news, Haye-Fury is off - Haye has had shoulder surgery and being advised to retire. Sad - it would have been great to see Fury KO'd.
