Floyd rose on a strat body?

OK, I'm a wee bit embarassed with this and I'm expecting a barrage of "You can't do that you tit!" replies but is it possible to attach a Floyd Rose to a strat body without routing for it? Ed doesn't seem to have routing on his frankenstrat. When I put my FR on it makes the action ridiculously high. How does Ed get away with it? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, additional routing HAS to be done to a typical Strat body for a Floyd.

If done correctly, you probably wouldn't really notice.

You are correct, sir! The trem cavity has to be widened to accept the Floyd block. On a flush-mounted (non-recessed) one, you wouldn't notice...

Try shimming the neck to get the action lower.

Look at the floyd you have . does it have tall blocks ? if so you can get a new floyd on ebay with a thin plate and small blocks for about 30$ . I just put a floyd on a olfer strat for a friend and one of the things you must look at is if the neck is thick at the base or one of the thin ones like the off brands or a newer fender .. You would think FR would market the appropriate
trem as a "Floyd Rose for Strat"..
Ive seen other manufacturers do that...

They do...it's called the "Fender Floyd Rose", and is/was on some of the more upscale American Standards and Deluxes...

...It fits in the standard tremolo cavity I'm pretty sure, has no fine-tuners, and you'd use an LSR nut and locking tuners...I'd try one if Fender (or somebody) made a 1 3/4" LSR nut!

The LSRs are the ones that use ball bearings..not completely frictionless, but it does seem to work pretty well, at least on the ones I've tried.

But yeah, I see your point. Might be worth a try...

    Yup, I remember those.

Are you sure they had Floyd's cos that doesn't look like any of the three I own?

I have a Fender catalogue from '92 and it also included Floyd Rose Strat Models along with "HRR" models equipped with Floyds.

    Here's an "HRR"

Here's an actual "Floyd Rose Stratocaster" model

Also and if I remember correctly, I think Fender did a Ritchie Samboora Sig model also equipped with a Floyd?

Yup, they did and all of these models pretty much look the same to me? For specifics, I'd ask ELVIS...

I toyed with the idea of buying a mexican fat strat with a floyd but the bad points outway the good on those.

you can pick up a fender hm strat from the late 90's for a couple of hundred dollars on ebay these have kahler's floyd equivelent

or take the easy option and buy an ibanez rg, the mid to high range ones would give a strat a run for its money any day (in my opinion)

All of the new Fenders available at the moment (all one of them) with a Floyd on them have specs not geared towards rock playing apart from the Floyd itself.
Such as small frets, and only 21 of them, not 22, vintage radius fingerboards.
Putting a shim under the neck to lower the action just makes the strings really high off the body, which personally, I find hideous.
Just get the body routed. You'll be alot happier with the results.

This is a great option as long as the action isn't to high. What you should try in cut a thin piece of balsa wood and shim the neck pocket closest to the bridge. By doing this you will actually slightly tilt the neck down on the tuner end and raise the end closest to the bridge. 20 to 30% of brand new fenders come out of the factory with some degree of shimming in the neck and they tend to use very thin balsa

I had a Sambora Strat and it was a real turkey. It just never sounded good or played that well.

As far a Floyd Strats go, you are better off building your own or having a custom builder make you one. I've never played a Fender with a Floyd I liked.

The most important consideration is what kind of Floyd (original, Schaller, Floyd Rose II) are you using and how is it going to be set up (floating, non-floating). This is all important because the guitar body and neck pocket need to be routed to get the correct clearance and neck angle.

It all starts with the wood. You also have to know your neck radiouse and nut width. Usually a 10" compound radiouse neck for a Floyd.

I like 22 medium jumbo frets on my necks bolted to a swamp ash body. Just give me one pickup like eddi and a cool paintjob. I like metal flake myself.
