Ed could still play after Hagar hooked up with VH, but he was wasting his talent with a b-league assclown fronting his band.

It's funny how Hagar and the sheep try to play up the Chedmaster's alleged guitar abilities, but the fact is that DAVE actually played guitar on more records. I don't believe Sammy played guitar on any studio album (except maybe that "Apolitical Blues" abortion which was a "secret bonus track" on OUknowThisSucksAss2. And even on the live albums, he only played on songs from his solo albums.

Not to say that makes Dave a better guitarist, but then he never claimed to be.

Which is why you could write a DLR guitar part for a record, because he wasn't trying to steal Eddie's thunder.

Hagar even pretending to challenge Eddie (and obviously he was pretending) is a pathetic joke. He couldn't even pull off his tissue-paper thin guitar sound of the late 70's without Gary Pihl's help.

Sammy Hagar ain't no guitar hero. Not by a long shot.

Agreed that Hagar throwing down the gauntlet to Eddie in that clip was half tongue-in-cheek, but Hagar did say in interviews of the period that he felt his guitar playing abilities gave Ed a kick in the ass and made him play better, which is utterly ridiculous...but then Sammy has never been at a loss for words when it came to saying silly things.

I seem to remember that guitar duels were part of Sam's stage show during his solo years pre-Van Hagar.

All just part of the pantomime antics he brought to the band. Staged, and probably exactly the same every night.
